Red Dead, Call of Duty top GameFly's 2010 charts

Blockbuster hits also online rental service's most requested games of the year; Splinter Cell: Conviction, God of War III, Super Mario Galaxy 2 top platform-exclusive titles.

Last month, it was determined that Call of Duty: Black Ops has sold more copies in the US alone than Red Dead Redemption has shipped around the world. So while Black Ops is a cinch to be all alone in front on the NPD Group's best-selling games of 2010 chart, the Treyarch-developed first-person shooter took a backseat to Red Dead Redemption when it came to gamers interested in borrowing rather than buying. GameFly today released its top 10 most requested rental lists for all major platforms, showing Rockstar San Diego's open-world Western riding high in the saddle in the top spot for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and cross-platform charts.

Red Dead Redemption was in high demand at GameFly.
Red Dead Redemption was in high demand at GameFly.

Red Dead Redemption and Call of Duty: Black Ops also placed first and second on the Xbox 360-specific top 10 list, while the PS3's top spots went to system exclusives God of War III and Heavy Rain. While the remainder of the PS3 list was occupied by multiplatform titles, the Wii's chart was thoroughly dominated by system exclusives, with Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Donkey Kong Country Returns taking the top two spots.

On the portable front, DS-owning GameFly subscribers lined up for Nintendo-published titles like Pokemon SoulSilver and HeartGold, with a sprinkling of third-party options like Super Scribblenauts and Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. Meanwhile, PSP players' most requested titles were the Disney-Square Enix crossover Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and Konami's Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

GameFly compiled its lists based on the titles in its customers' GameQs, prioritized queues of the titles they would like sent to them. According to the rental service, more than 400,000 members' preferences were taken into account.

i have read a few comments on here about people not liking fps games an call of duty,,,,,,,,,,, THANK GOD! im starting to think im the only sane person left in america, i mean i will play sum multiplayer fps matches on occasions wen im at freinds houses or wutever, but i just thank god i grew up in the good ole days playing nintendo, sega an playstaion, where fps games were few an rather unheard of, maybe thats why i dont prefer fps games, cuz i didnt play them growing up, an now thats all these kids have is floods an floods of mediocre first person shooters, its a shame really, but i didnt mean to rant, so ima shut up now!

@TheTrueMagusX1 I am indeed aware of RDR's excellent multiplayer - I was simply making the point what most people got out of the two games. Just for the record, RDR is part of my permanent game collection, Black Ops I sold a week after I bought it.

Gamefly never sent me EVER the top games in these lists. I always got - Long wait, not available at present or such. Always got item #14 or such in my queue. Thus I canceled gamefly. It was useless.

@gerhardtscriven So you play Red Dead Redemption Once and its all over? That game is not a one time game by anymeans. and its funny that you bring up that Call of Duty Black Ops has a multiplayer but neglect the fact that RDR has a very active and unique Online Multiplayer in its own right. Also add to the fact the DLC, specifically the Undead Nightmare add on, and you have a game that is not a one time thing by anymeans...

Duh, of course black ops would be less of a rental candidate than rdr... the attractions of bo is, for most people, in the multi-player experience, whereas, for rdr, it is for the single player. This being the case, rdr is far more suitable for rental. You play the game once and u r done.

Some games i would rather rent then buy Like Vanquish, or games with an 8-11 hour long campaign but no MP. However the last movie store in my town closed down so i either buy or nothing.

This is just dumb. How can you compare games from different genres and then claim one more successful/popular than the other? COD is a FPS, RDR is a third-person open-world action game - so they will not necessarily be played by the same audience. Some gamers love FPS's. Some (like me) hate them. It's stupid to compare. The stats above are meaningless.

Uh, these stats are flawed. Red Dead came out like 7 months earlier, so it kind of had a head start.

@deesnutts25 No offense, but you really need to ger your facts straight about when a game has been released man. Battlefield Bad Company 2 came out on March 2, 2010. Last I recall, that was barely about ten months ago. Really, come on....

@ shani_boy101 I do, I don't want to fork out money for a game every single month. I would rather pay 15 dollars for a game that I could borrow till I get bored of it, then paying 60 dollars for a game until I get bored of it and then get ripped off by these big corporations when I attempt to trade in games.

gamefly is must if you own all systems like i do. its really good for good games that aint quite worth owning... like most ps3 exclusives, sure they have some great single player modes to them. but nothing you wont play and beat in a week then be sick of it and only get 20 bucks trade in credit for. its better just to rent it imo.

I like how BFBC2 is still highly rentable, yet has been out for 2 years, where CoD:BO is only a few months old, just goes to show who makes a better game.

"Splinter Cell: Conviction, God of War III, Super Mario Galaxy 2 top platform-exclusive titles" . Since when is Splinter Cell: Conviction a platform exclusive? PC and 360 anyone? Epic editorial FAIL by Brendan Sinclair. I know Gamefly is for consoles only but that doesn't change the fact that Splinter Cell: Conviction isn't an exclusive to a particular platform. I'm just saying.

Not to seem negative, but don't people tend to rent games they aren't sure will be good? So....these sales figures as they call them really tell nothing about the games.

I got a better deal than a rent for GOW3. ebagmes was offering a full refund after a week of purchase so I technically played and finished it for free within that week. Doesn't get any better than that.

@youngsexynerd Because games are only 10 hours long, so why pay 60$ when you can pay 5$ and finish them in few days

@youngsexynerd Because some gamers feel that paying $60 for a game is ludicrous and some gamers don't like to play the same game twice. I own all the consoles and handhelds so it's difficult for me to justify re-playing a game I've already beaten when I could be enjoying a new experience.
