Read Nintendo's Response to Kid's Super Mario Bros. 4 Pitch

11-year-old pitches game idea to Nintendo; here's what the esteemed game company wrote back.

[DISCLOSURE: The subject of this story is a freelance critic who writes for GameSpot]

More than two decades ago in early 1990, a hopeful 11-year-old named Jason Venter sent Nintendo of America a document featuring drawings and text; it was his pitch for Super Mario Bros. 4.

Venter, who currently heads up the website HonestGamers and writes as a freelance game critic, has now published the response he received. In it, a Nintendo representative is kind and cordial, declining to use Venter's ideas, but wishing him the best. You can read Nintendo's full response below.

No Caption Provided

Venter's 13-page pitch included a hand-drawn map and visualizations for new characters, including an unknown brother of evil king Bowser, who, like his sibling, planned to capture the Princess. In this game, Mario was going to be called yet again to rescue her, Venter told Polygon.

Writing on his website, Venter said the kind response he received from Nintendo, even if it was just a standard reply sent to all who write in, is one of the reasons why he's been a longtime supporter of their games.

"I've been a fan of Nintendo and its games for a long while, and this letter (partly) shows why," Venter says. "When I sent an unsolicited idea, the company didn't have to send a careful response, and didn't need to return my documents. Sending them through the paper shredder probably would have worked just as well."

Its a cute story. You ever notice how kids never send game ideas to Sony or MS? And if they ever did it would most likely involve a game they are not supposed to be playing. Its not Nintendo's fault that their games inspire the future game creators of the world.

Microsoft and Sony would send cease and desist letters from their legal departments.

<< LINK REMOVED >> If Sony or MS were to develop a game based on someone else's idea, good chance that person would be completely kept out of the process, Sony/MS would trademark the information and ideas, claiming creative ownership, and laughing all the way to the bank.

Yes I know, I have a jaded point of view and a general lack of trust for huge companies. But you know damn well this has probably happened already.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> That is honestly the reason why most developers don't even read game pitch ideas as they hit their inbox. They don't even open it, they simply delete it so they can't be sued for plagerism later.

Some kid should write the major publishers to give them ideas on where to put in more DLC and micro transactions. Maybe they will hire him.

Totally sounds like a story idea Nintendo would use, nowadays. Twin of Bowser, princess snatching, etc.

Does that mean Nintendo's creative prowess of today = that of an 11 year old boy? Oh my.

Game/Movies studios have policies to send ideas back without ever reading them. If they read them, and any small idea from a paper they read were in the game; an easy sue. So all studios do this all the time. It's not like studios have any shortage of ideas anyway.

<< LINK REMOVED >> actually it's not an easy sue. It's much more complicated than that. Just because they use your idea doesn't mean you have a right to it. Unless you TM and C it- nah. They'll take it no problem and say they came up with it.

Coca-Cola did something similar with my dad when they released vanilla coke that one time. My dad had sent them that idea a few years before they did it. They declined it from him and then made it themselves.

Nothing you can do about it.

Best thing to do is to not send ideas to massive corporations who pay people to come up with ideas already. You're just asking to have your idea stolen without even so much as a "thank you."

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I think you need to research copyright law a little more. An idea, especially one as fleshed out as Mr. Venter's, is copyrighted. Yes, even one that is based off existing copyrighted work. If I write a novel based in the Super Mario universe and I send it to Nintendo and they get it published without my permission or compensation, I have the right to sue. It is their I.P. but it is my creation.

Once an original idea is formed, the US Govt recognizes it as a copyrighted piece of work. So if your father can prove that he had the idea of Vanilla coke or a vanilla flavored cola, he has some merit to sue. The only thing is, during the discovery process, if it is discovered that Coca-Cola was developing the flavor before or even during the time your father sent in the idea, they will win.

I got one of these before. When I was like 8 or so I designed a sorta pacman esque game that incorporated skateboarding into it. They sent me a similar letter and gave me a bunch of stickers and a keychain. Kinda a bummer as a kid but it was still nice they acknowledged it.

Even today, when you register a game on Club Nintendo, you can write feedback and they actually read it.

Another reason why Nintendo is the greatest gaming company to ever grace this Earth. Not only responding to a child's dream, but also teaching him that you don't always get what you want, and if you REALLY want it, you have to work even harder. You think Sony or Microsoft would have responded? No.

A similar story happened to me when I was a kid. I sent a letter to Nintendo, asking for advices on a game. I'm not sure which game it was, but I do remember it wasn't even a Nintendo production. With my kid logic, I sent Nintendo a letter anyway, asking how I could beat X boss in game Y. Obviously, I did not receive a walkthrough or any advice, but Nintendo was still kind enough to send a reply, explaining they had no knowledge about another company's game, thanking me for buying and playing an NES, blala. Even though I did not receive the answer I was looking for, I did appreciate the reply and I recall beating the annoying boss a few days later.
