Read Nintendo's Response to Kid's Super Mario Bros. 4 Pitch

11-year-old pitches game idea to Nintendo; here's what the esteemed game company wrote back.

[DISCLOSURE: The subject of this story is a freelance critic who writes for GameSpot]

More than two decades ago in early 1990, a hopeful 11-year-old named Jason Venter sent Nintendo of America a document featuring drawings and text; it was his pitch for Super Mario Bros. 4.

Venter, who currently heads up the website HonestGamers and writes as a freelance game critic, has now published the response he received. In it, a Nintendo representative is kind and cordial, declining to use Venter's ideas, but wishing him the best. You can read Nintendo's full response below.

No Caption Provided

Venter's 13-page pitch included a hand-drawn map and visualizations for new characters, including an unknown brother of evil king Bowser, who, like his sibling, planned to capture the Princess. In this game, Mario was going to be called yet again to rescue her, Venter told Polygon.

Writing on his website, Venter said the kind response he received from Nintendo, even if it was just a standard reply sent to all who write in, is one of the reasons why he's been a longtime supporter of their games.

"I've been a fan of Nintendo and its games for a long while, and this letter (partly) shows why," Venter says. "When I sent an unsolicited idea, the company didn't have to send a careful response, and didn't need to return my documents. Sending them through the paper shredder probably would have worked just as well."

I remember them but was way too young to really have any reason to use them.

24 years ago, that was manually typed on a typewriter. Look at it - nothing automated about that typeset. Sure, a secretary typed some boss' handwritten notes but they obviously looked at the kid's presentation and the comments were encouraging and sincere. A very nice response to a kid's earnest submission. Nothing to scoff at, it's a good story.

Couldn't the more dedicated/altruistic fans just write in their pitches "I give up all legal rights in this document regarding X game in X series to you, and will even sign a contract if needed to make it official" to get around the "no fan ideas" policy, even if the company receiving them doesn't use the ideas exactly?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yes, but won't make a difference. That person could still come around and sue. That's the "beauty" of the legal system we live in.

If the ideas were truly revolutionary they would hire the individual. It's far too risky to take ideas from fans directly. The reason they have to send these letters as a reply is so people don't coincidentally guess a new feature/idea/etc and then claim Nintendo stole their idea.

This is actually why they have a specific person checking these types of emails. The developers themselves need to remain as separate as possible from that process otherwise they have the potential for a lawsuit on their hands. If the only person reading these emails is just a lowly assistant there is less potential for problems.

Probably hundreds of thousands of people have gotten this exact same thing and probably now just do something similar through e-mail. Why is this news?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Even if it was a form letter, it says a lot that Nintendo would invest enough manpower to read the suggestion, insert the name into the letter, print it out, address the envelope, and physically mail it back. That doesn't sound like much, but think how many letters Nintendo would receive on a daily basis. It would take at least a few dedicated people to perform that role. People that required salaries, benefits, etc. No small investment.

I remember writing to Sega about a game idea. It was a racing game where all the cars had guns and could blast each other off the road. This was very early 90's so well before games like that were around. I didn't even get a response from them. They probably chuckled and then threw it in the bin. At least Nintendo had the decency to send a response to this guy.

This is the same thing you'll hear from big movie directors if you tell them you have an idea. They turn around and walk right away. If they hear your idea, then later come up with something on their own that's even remotely similar they have a potential lawsuit on their hands.

Directors don't usually come up with the ideas, that's the script writer's job, so...

Today, Nintendo would have likely stated "Nintendo does not respond to rumors and speculation," followed by a 25-minute video uploaded to Youtube that features no game footage of any kind.

SMB4 (Super Mario World) did end up being one of the greatest in the entire series of Mario games, and a defining launch title for the new platform.

My 1-2-3 would be 3-4-64 (unless we're counting Super Mario Kart[3]).

You know what really happened? This kid came up with Nintendo's EXACT idea they were developing, and they said "Dammit!" and scrapped the entire project.

This was back when Nintendo was fully ingrained in the culture. Nintendo was in The Wizard, the NES Advantage was in Ghostbusters 2, Super Mario Bros 3 was still busy blowing our balls off, and Nintendo had a magazine that you could write to and a phone number you could call for game tips. I remember movies that came out as late as the summer of 1992 (3 Ninjas) that showed footage of Super Mario Bros 3... Nintendo was utterly dominating at the time.

I don't think it will ever be that way again. This was 1990... no smartphones, no TVs with literally hundreds of channels at your fingertips, no internet (for most people anyway) that could kill a 12 year-old's naivete, and nobody had a post-secondary degree for game design because it didn't exist. Now everything's all sterile, digital, and formal... and worst of all everything's all corporate. It's not that things weren't corporate in 1990 but it wasn't presented as such and it wasn't considered by its consumers as such. Nobody looked at Nintendo that way (other than parents maybe).

The good news is that the indie scene can actually provide a medium for people to release those creative juices. You didn't have that in 1990... at best you could make a computer game but you still had to come up with some way to distribute it. Now you can do indie games as downloadable titles for consoles and there's infinite options on PC to get your stuff out there... of course now that we have all that we have this lovely thing called the internet where children's dreams are crushed.

The development of Axiom Verge gives me the vibe you describe in your final paragraph. The magic is still out there, it's just a bit more spread out.
