Q&A: Behind the new PlayStation Store-front

SCEA's PlayStation Network head Susan Panico talks about the PS3's newly revamped shopping experience and its launch hiccups, video downloads independent of Home, coming "this year."

After a rough first 13 months on the market, the PlayStation 3 is having a good 2008. Though it still trails the Wii, Sony's high-powered console outsold its archrival the Xbox 360 in January and February, according to industry-research firm the NPD Group. March was essentially a tie between the two consoles, with the 360 eking out a 5,000-unit victory.

The new and improved PlayStation Store.
The new and improved PlayStation Store.

Perhaps more importantly, Sony's 2008 software lineup for the PS3 is its most robust yet. Following next week's launch of the dual-platform Grand Theft Auto IV, the electronics giant has lined up a string of high-profile third- and first-party exclusives, including Haze (May 20), Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (June 12), LittleBigPlanet (Q3), SOCOM: Confrontation (September 16), Resistance 2 (TBA '08), Killzone 2 (TBA '08), and Gran Turismo 5 (TBA '08).

Last week, Sony gave consumers a taste of what's to come with the release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. The partial version of the full-fledged game was released both on Blu-ray Disc and via the PS3 version of the PlayStation Store, the console's online-commerce service. Shortly before the game went live, Sony took down the old, Web-browser-based PlayStation Store, which had been criticized for providing a slow shopping experience.

Last Tuesday, the new PlayStation Store went online. Besides being based on in-console software (via firmware update 2.30), the store offers a new, more streamlined interface, and it organizes content into eight sections: new releases, downloadable games, view all by title, add-ons, demos, videos, featured items, and themes & wallpapers. The 900 pieces of content on the store were also reorganized for easier access.

One thing that the new PlayStation Store doesn't have is television shows for sale and films for rent, a service that Xbox Live Marketplace provides. Curiously, the dearth of such premium content comes in spite of the fact that Sony Pictures Entertainment cranks out hundreds of television episodes and films each year. Indeed, Sony Computer Entertainment America has leveraged this relationship to sell both the PS3 and PlayStation Portable, bundling each with premium films on Blu-ray Disc and Universal Media Disc (UMD), respectively.

Why isn't Sony leading a similar charge with downloadable video on the PS3? Will the video service launch be part of Sony's ambitious Home service, which was delayed this morning? To answer these questions, and to learn more about the new PlayStation Store, GameSpot spoke with Susan Panico (pictured), SCEA's senior director of PlayStation Network.

GameSpot: What led to the store redesign? Was it purely in response to consumer feedback?

Susan Panico: We definitely listened to our consumers, and they had a lot of good feedback. Their comments were closely aligned to our internal PlayStation Network team's "wish list." The store UI's original design did not take our cultural usage model into full consideration. There is new leadership over PlayStation Network in Japan, and they have been great in listening to our market feedback. There were a lot of things we wanted to do on day one which were not achievable at the time. Many of those changes are reflected in the new PS Store design, and a few additional usability features will be coming down in the back half of the year.

GS: Why release it now?

SP: We wanted to release it as soon as the majority of our needs were met. Based on a list of end-user priorities, the timing was now.

GS: What do you think its biggest improvement is?

SP: One key improvement is purely in design. The revamped PlayStation Store is much more in line with the PlayStation brand--more sleek and current. Also, the way content is categorized makes it much easier to browse and find things. As a PlayStation Network user, my favorite improvement is that content is now marked when you purchase it and doesn't disappear when you buy it.

GS: There have been widespread reports of problems with icons loading and some other slowness issues. What is the cause of the issues? What is Sony doing to address them, and when will they be fixed?

SP: We are aware that many users have experienced delays while the PlayStation Store thumbnail icons are being downloaded. This is a temporary consequence of a new system implementation and high global traffic levels, which we are working quickly to resolve.

GS: Is this update the first in a series? If so, when can we expect the next wave?

SP: The next update will be in coordination with the launch of the video-download service.

GS: In a post last week, SCEA senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation Network Peter Dille said that details were "coming very soon" about a "video service for PS3 in a way that separates the service from others you've seen or used." What exactly did he mean?

SP: I believe he meant that we strive do things in a "PlayStation-esque" way. Our first priority is to deliver things that are unique, PlayStation-defining experiences that you can't get anywhere else, and Home is a good example of this. We could create a 2D, menu-driven community service, but we wanted to up the ante and deliver a high-definition, robust virtual world to serve as the community destination for PS3 gamers.

GS: When can we expect the video service? By year's end?

SP: As Peter noted on the blog, "soon." It will be this year. We feel that it's important to spend more time on development to reaffirm our commitment to delivering a unique, quality experience.

GS: Will it launch alongside Home in the fall? Will it be part of Home?

SP: Video content will be available from the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation Network. Home is a separate service focused on gaming and community. Naturally, we continue to explore how all of our services work together.

GS: What kind of pricing are you anticipating for video content on the Store?

SP: We will have competitive pricing models. We will have more details on this at a later time.

GS: Many believe that, given Sony's vast film and television library and the PS3's built-in hard drive, that the PS Store should've had video DLC at launch. What's your response to that criticism?

The Gran Turismo 5 Prologue download page.
The Gran Turismo 5 Prologue download page.

SP: Our primary goal was to focus on delivering quality games and focus on getting that right. I think we've done a great job in meeting our goals in that we have provided dynamic, fresh content experiences that are unique to PlayStation 3 and that take advantage of the PS3's technology. As it relates to film and TV content, we are part of a broader entertainment company; the goal is to leverage these relationships and to provide content from all the studios and networks that are relevant to our audience.

GS: At the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show, Sony announced that it would launch a version of its Connect service for video and music for the PSP. That never happened, and the Connect store shut down last month for good. Why did you wait so long for the big content push for the PlayStation Store?

SP: At the time, we had our sights on games, and though we continue to maintain this focus, we are expanding to other forms of entertainment. PS3 and PSP are multifunctional media devices, and we want consumers to enjoy the full potential of the hardware. PlayStation users are into movies, TV, comics, et cetera, and we want to offer our PlayStation fans a broad variety of entertainment options.

GS: One big issue for all of the downloadable systems is portfolio management. What criteria are you using to select which games to approve for release on the service?

SP: When evaluating games made specifically for the PlayStation Network, we look at a few things: First, does it show off the technical capability of the PS3? Second, is it a unique or original experience, perhaps even creating a new genre altogether? And finally, the game has to be a blast to play. If you look at the games available on the PlayStation Store--fl0w, Calling All Cars, Pain, Warhawk, and even the under-the-radar hit PixelJunk Monsters--the product-development community has done an excellent job in meeting this criteria.

GS: When there are cross-platform releases of content like Rock Band songs or Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo Remix on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, PS3 fans have to wait until Thursday for no apparent reason. Are you planning to ever release content throughout the week?

SP: We are open to suggestions, but we have found that both operationally and by consumer preference it works best to have a regular, scheduled "new release" day each week.

GS: The release dates for some content on the PlayStation Store are advertised ahead of time, but many are not. Why can't we get a better idea of what to expect from the store before the Thursday it comes out, or even two or three weeks in advance?

SP: Our thought was that in the presence of a fast-paced, online world, we wanted to keep promotions as timely as possible to the release dates of the product. Unlike other industries, the development schedules on games are constantly shifting, so again, we keep it to a week-by-week snapshot. Again, we are open to feedback on this.

GS: Why aren't we seeing original PlayStation games added to the store with more frequency?

SP: We are working as fast as we can to get the catalog of PS One games on to the PlayStation Store. The licensing and clearing of these titles can be challenging and time consuming. For example, the software publisher may not have cleared the music rights in the game past a five-year period, which prevents us from selling it on the store.

GS: What are you finding people decide when they are given a choice between purchasing retail copies of a game or downloading it, as they have been given with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Warhawk?

SP: A majority of consumers like to walk into a store, pick up a package, see it, read it, et cetera. Brick-and-mortar retail will always be a huge purchase destination. We do have a consumer set who are avid online gamers, avid PSN users and tend to try and buy online, and these "power users" are also major influencers amongst their peer group.

Hey just so you guys know there are SOME games that allow you to access the PS3 XMB in game and look at friends and stuff (Army of 2 allows you to look at friends and messages). Its an optional feature for the game designers, just like custom soundtracks, standard for all 360 games but optional for PS3 (MLB 08: The Show has it). However i think i read somewhere that there was gonna be an update for PS3 for all console to be able to do it and not just the games (staying free) or it might have been a game i was reading about that included the feature... dont really remember... but either way it IS a another FREE feature of PS3, it just depends on whether or not the makers want to take time to include it. AND in case you havent figured it out yet from these comments PSN IS FREEEEE! and the PS3 has updates regularly to make the console better and better (ex. PS store).

_guenter_26 What are your problem, what is the use of going to ps3 forums and post stupid comments, lets say that they're equally good, for example, ps3 got better hardware, free online service and a bunch of great games coming up and xBox 360 got better online service(not free though), a bunch of good games like Halo 3 and mass effect, so lets just say they're are equal.

Which is just childish.Instead of returning the favor, which sparks even more console war garbage,be one of the few to try to get it to stop.It doesn't help anything, its just stupid.Every console, including the Wii has its ups and downs, none are perfect. And as an owner of all of them I know this of course,I'm just tired of the constant bashing, but the ratio is kinda 2/1 in terms of who is bashing who for the most part.I know there is plenty of Sony fanboys that bash the 360 for one reason or another, and they are dumb, reguardless of wether its true or not,but the amount of 360 fanboys that bash the PS3 seems kinda doubled at this point,at least viewing what i've seen.I would just like this to die,as well as plenty of other people...anyone could make a list or things for 360,Wii,and PS3 and bash them to hell with only jotting down the negative things but why really? Lets just get along,seriously-XBL is a great service, that most feel they get their money's worth, but PSN isn't "terrible" and "will never be XBL" as people say,its still good and from the upcoming things it has heading to it is looking to make it all that much better,I just would enjoy seeing people agree once in a while is all,or at least keep your negative opinions to yourself.

You still make no sense mall...the words "just wait" was still never said in any thing that you pointed out.By a matter of time I mean, the things that we already "know" that we are getting will be here soon, not speculation of what we are getting, but what they've already said is coming soon.I love how to wait until you have a it put in front of you to jump on something as well instead of just stating what you had to say a while ago, good work. And good work guenter 26,keep up the stupid fanboy console war garbage,we obviously still need it.On top of the fact that we're talking about PSN here, not xbl at all,and even the comparison has nothing to do with the 360 in general, xbl is just its service.I 've said it plenty times that I have all the consoles and they all have their pluses and minuses(but mostly its just the games that matter) and its definately more annoying having a console that constantly has a 20% fail rate thats already died twice rather then one I know that won't.

@pause... sweet mother of Jesus.. you yourself said, and I'm using your own words here, "so it won't be long"... "just a matter of time".... "eventually the PS3 gets an in game guide"... if you can't even remember the things you type, i.e. turning around and posting how no one said 'just wait', when you yourself said exactly that in three different posts, than how can any of your posts be taken seriously ? Just stop o.k., or at the very least, be consistent and make sense. Sorry for being mean, but don't go correcting people when you're a contradiction in waiting.

no one said "just wait" anywhere from what I can see actually, and i'm not even going to entertain your comments or your childish reply posts. As i've stated I own all the systems and there are of course likes/dislikes of everything, but this being a PS3 story and not a microsoft fanboy 12 year old comment section, its best it stays within its parameters of what the story is about, not your half witted opinions that no one needs.

@pause422 "lol yeah its pretty funny really. There's waaay more PS3 games running off of dedicated servers, xbl always has to worry about hosts, which is kinda one of the things I get really tired of it." Exactly!!! When I had a 360 (cringes at the thought) I had so much trouble finding games to hop into. On the PS3 it's never been an issue. In fact, in Warhawk there's almost too many choices of dedicated servers for me to choose from.

What annoys me about the console wars is that XBL users seem to think that b/c they pay, all of their games run on dedicated servers. They are dead wrong in this. They are paying to run off of other people's systems/network connections.

Yeah, for a while now...I know I may be one of the only ones..but i'll either just DL a video on the PC through torrent,or watch a dvd/blu ray if I want good quality from it,i'm still not much for the download stuff, just stating its there. And microsofts isn't much better, but thats why PS3 has a BRay player so,its all fine with me.

@ pause422. Yeah, I think the XMB is the last real obstacle to the XBL superiority argument. As for the video download service, I found this disappointing. We just got it a few months ago in Canada (like Europe, we were left out) I was pretty excited to get it. I wanted something to flex the muscle of my Hi-Def projector. When it came I found the quality on the HD titles was lacking. It was no better than an upscaled DVD, and no where close to the quality of a Blu-Ray. Add to that a very limited selection (in Canada anyway), disappointing load times and the fact that it's the same price as a rental from the store and I quickly decided that VideoMarketplace was a waste of my time. I'll stick to DVD's and Blu-Ray for movies worth owning.

That is most definately the only difference darkride. All people say is so great about it has nothing to do with any of its features, because PSN already has them all(and will have movies very soon) its only the communication options that everyone brags about. It was already said ,we're getting an in game XMB soon for the PS3.So it won't be long before even that bit is a difference..then everyone who feels like coming into random threads that have nothing to do with console wars and flaming the ps3 or psn, will think a second about how they have to pay for what is in no way better than what we get free.Just a matter of time, its definatley coming along very well for the time being, good job Sony.

@ chimairawr. I agree, these wars are quite bothersome and so often the arguments made are based on such ludicrous claims. At any rate, having used both PSN and XBL extensively, I have to say I never saw what was better about the XBL experience. The only thing that really seemed better was the communication options for your friend list. Of course the XBL marketplace has more available simply being available longer, but I find the two services pretty even. Just my two cents. I finally downgraded my XBL to silver last fall after having XBL since the original Xbox. It was certainly better than what was available back then, but I couldn't really justify paying for this service anymore. I play all the time on the PSN now and haven't looked back.

Thats where it gets good too Chimairawr,as PS3 gets to the level of the few features that people love about XBL while having to pay and it stays free every month,Microsoft will really need to rethink what they do...because xbl really can't be crammed with anything else for them to try to "make it better" anymore. They'll just have to think about the whole subscription thing in general at that point, but i'm sure they'll still always have it because microsoft are greedy that way, even as one of the richest companies in the world they always want more.

Fanboy wars are annoying. Yes XBL is more expensive than PSN, but at the moment I'd argue it offers a better service. But it's good to see that Sony are trying to step up their game, which in turn will mean MS will have to improve theirs. The competition can only be good for the gamers, at the end of the day.

All of you 360 fanboys that just have to bring your 14 year old asses into the comments for a PS3 update just to claim your service is and "will always be better" answer me this question,no "nah it won't happen" or anything, just straight out answer the question and nothing else-What would you do,if eventually the PS3 gets an in game guide, and easy friends lists/messages/invites and all that stuff that you tout xbl doing better, what would you do if we end up getting all of it,or more and the service stays free? Just answer that,no whats ifs or buts or no ways, just answer the question.About the service that you so desireably defend and worship as a god and continue stupid system war stuff over.Just answer it.(as i've said before,I have all the consoles and I like them both,i'm just someone who's sick of the stupid system war crap,no matter who you are and what console you love the most, yours isn't the best, get over it.)

I'm nervous about Home. I'm not really into it. We'll see how it goes. And I kinda like the whole PS1 or NES or Xbox thing they have going on. But, I agree with R3DN1N3, I would rather pull out the original system or buy the game off eBay. Unless its Radiant Silvergun [Saturn] ($200 yeah right) or Panzer Dragoon Saga [Saturn]. I don't know about Hanna Montana being above a 2.5. Anyways, PSN is lacking in comparison to XBL. I give credit to Sony for matching what M$ has available for service. BTW they do have a free service, you can still play online even, you don't even pay a penny. The XBL Silver Membership is like PSN, in SOME ways, not all. I don't mind paying for service, I wouldn't care paying for service on PSN either. As long as I get to play against other people over the internet and bash their skulls in or shoot them in the face, its all the same, whether I'm paying 14 cents plus High-Speed internet or paying nothing but High-Speed Internet. I'll enjoi my time no matter what. ;)

All this talk about PS1 games........don't u PSboys have your PS1's?! This shouldn't be an issue. If I wanted to go retro again all I gotta do is bust out mys NES or N64. The ONLY reason anyone would or should have to download and old game is because they didn't purchase the original copy.

Don't worry mall69, we won't forget your milk, have fun using your console while it lasts, PS3 will win eventually and the you'll all have to go crawling back to Microsoft and pay them for a new console instead of all these updates to their old one.

@mall69 FACT: You just wasted 14 cents by posting on this forum rather than playing on XBL. FACT: You pay 14 cents a day to play against people online. I pay nothing. FACT: You pay 14 cents a day to play using other 360 user's connections. I pay nothing to use other people's connections, but also get dedicated servers. FACT: Sony will not charge consumers for online. Instead MS will have to offer a free service or they will start to lag behind. I'll enjoy my free service. You enjoy paying for one. There you go.

@havoc & dmish....you PSN guys kill me... constantly hyping the fact that Sony's online is free while at the same time begging Sony to put in features that a similiar 'subscription' based service has had for years. and since you're here..... the ONLY REASON that Sony's service is FREE, is that they desperately needed something to differentiate themselves with from MS's Live, because apples to apples it's absolutely no comparison. they know it and you know it. additionaly, if you think it's going to stay free as Sony continues to add features, refine the online gameplay and turn what is right now, compared to Live, a stripped down, cumbersome to navigate and overall unfriendly user experience... than you're very naive. seriously, as the service evolves, how do you turds think that's going to happen; magic cybersprites that update PSN nightly as we sleep.... gotta tell ya', that's probably not how it's going to work. how it will work is real live people getting paid real live money to put in long hours sweating over the improvements their making. who's gonna pay these guys?.. cause Sony's not gonna keep getting kicked in the teeth, their only giving it away now because they HAVE TO. but you go ahead, keep touting how PSN does't charge it's user like the suckers over on Live, 'cause we won't be able to hear you while we're checking messages 'in game', sorting through invites and recorded voicemails through a unified gamertag network, filtering through movies, music videos, skipping over cross-game invites...just you know, bunches of stuff. seems like an awful lot for others to miss out on over 14cents a day. 14 pennies. but then again, you PSN guys don't really have a choice do you. you're stuck with what you 'didn't' pay for.

I did have problems downloading the icons on day 1, but know the icons load up just fine. Just about or faster than the speed of the Xbox Marketplace icons. Both services are great, clean, and easy to navigate. My family has a Wii, but I have done nothing online except for looking at the weather and news.

it's better than it was but it still has a long way to go to compete with xbox live's marketplace.

"SP: Our primary goal was to focus on delivering quality games and focus on getting that right." maybe they should have focused more on the quality games. a year and a half and still no AAAE?

@dmish82 Thank you for backing me up against @buzzguy. @buzzguy Hey. Why don't you go through the list of games currently on the Xbox360 that use online multiplayer... Got it? Good. Now, how many of those run on dedicated servers? Wow! What a small number! My point stands. I understand that I am paying a price and I am getting a service for that price. I understand the differences between the two competitors. The thing that people seem to overlook is that we, as consumers, do have a lot of say in what happens in the future. Continuing to suck-it-up and pay the price without at least speaking your voice, will lead to every other company charging what could be unfair prices for every service similar to it in the future. And it is likely that the prices will go up and up. A lot more people seem to have it pretty good and have the money to waste. Sure, I am one of those people, but I worked my way up to this, so I understand that there are people who have a hard time getting that $50/year for an XBL subscription. With the price of the PS3 dropping, the price difference is going to lessen and the PS3 will be the console to go to for people who want to play online, but don't normally have the money for the online fees. I know it's hard to understand how someone could own a PS3 or Xbox360 as well as broadband internet and not be able to afford $50/year. I really do know that sounds strange. However, there are hardcore gamers out there that live on a budget and something as simple as this little pricing problem could make a big difference in their buying decisions. $50 is a game that those people won't be able to get that year if they pay for an online subscription. What good is the subscription if you don't have games to play on the service you paid for? So, think about things a little harder next time you think the answer is as easy as: "If you want it, pay for it. If not, then shut up" ...because it's not always that easy.

@wingchunstudent What a great generic answer. It answers everything so easily for you, I bet, while at the same time it answers or fixes nothing for anyone regarding anything. Bravo. It's that kind of mentality and reasoning combo that has allowed for the worst things in the world to have and will easily continue to happen. Now what really gets me is not how childishly complacent that answer suggests you are, but how easily someone like yourself will ride the changes others demand... Changes that you and your like minded kind can come and stroll through as if it was such an easy thing to have happened. Or worse, you somehow join the band wagon after the fact feeling some form of entitlement to what wrongs we, the complainers, have gotten changed.

You don't want to pay for XBL, then don't. You think the PSN is better, then buy a PS3. It's as simple as that.
