PS5's Much Quicker Load Times Demonstrated In New Video

The PS5 is coming.

199 Comments

Update: Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 5, and the next-gen console is currently scheduled to release during the holiday season in 2020. Our original story follows.

Sony has again provided some new details on its next-generation console, which is still without a name but is, of course, we're referring to as the PlayStation 5. As part of Sony's Corporate Strategy Meeting this week, the company discussed at a high level what it hopes to achieve in the future across its various business units, including PlayStation. Among other things, this has afforded us a fresh look at just how much faster load times could potentially be on the new hardware.

Now Playing: PS5 Load Times Shown Off In New Video - GS News Update

The two keywords for PlayStation going forward are "immersive" and "seamless," Sony said. Concerning hardware, Sony said its next-generation console, the PS5, will offer an "immersive experience created by dramatically increased graphics rendering speeds."

This will be made possible through the "employment of further improved computational power and a customized ultra-fast, broadband SSD," Sony said.

Overall, the PlayStation 5--or whatever Sony ends up calling its new console--will offer experiences that "greatly exceed" what is possible on PS4 and PS4 Pro. Sony said people can expect "completely transformative and immersive gaming experiences" on the PS5.

One of the features that PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny talked about for the PS5 is how its use of solid-state drives will reduce loading screen times.

Cerny pointed out that the fast travel loading screen in Spider-Man on PS4 took roughly 15 seconds on a PS4 Pro, but less than one second on a dev kit for the PS5. Given that the new hardware will be backwards compatible with older games, that means your load times will likely be reduced across the board when you upgrade. Check out the video below from The Wall Street Journal report Takashi Mochizuki who is attending the Sony event today to see the faster load times in action.

Cerny also talked about how the PS5 will allow for faster rendering, which means more environmental objects and textures will populate at a faster rate. In the presentation today, Sony said the PS5 will offer "many new features" beyond these advancements to loading and rendering, though none were mentioned.

Also during the presentation, Sony said it expects the PS4 to reach sales of 100 million units by the end of the 2019 calendar year. PS4 sales currently stand at 96.8 million systems sold. PlayStation Network has 94 million monthly active users, the company said.

Additionally, Sony management talked about how streaming will play a big role in the PlayStation brand going forward. The PS5 will support Remote Play functionality, Sony confirmed, while management also said it's looking to its new deal with Microsoft for cloud-gaming solutions to play a role in the company's future success in that area. Sony of course already operates the PlayStation Now streaming service (which has 700,000 subscribers by Sony's latest count), but it appears the company has bigger and bolder plans in the future.

Sony is not attending E3 2019 next month, so the company presumably won't be announcing the PlayStation 5 there. The PlayStation 5 will have an "appealing" price point given its specs, according to Cerny, but there is no ballpark estimate yet regarding what the price may be.

No Caption Provided

As for the release date of the PlayStation 5, Sony has said it will not release in the next fiscal year, which means it won't launch April 2020 at the soonest.

Are these not the tag lines that have been put forth generation upon generation? And yet none of them deliver when held up to scrutiny. Of course things are going to get faster tech has moved on. How about gameplay??? Minecraft has shown time and time again that graphics and load times do not a great game make. I started gaming in the 70's and have played literally thousands of games over the years but gfx and experience has never been at the top of my list and a new era with Sony and MS pushing power is never going to change that. Get your studios to make games that people want to play not what you think they want or how you can milk it with dlc or mp.

dislike sony not attending e3. They should be there.. Events like this create buzz and $$ for the industry even if sony doesnt see direct payback for what im sure is a huge cost. They are in position to reap the rewards of everyone else effort at E3 due to market dominance.

I can always understand when times are tough the smaller vendors reducing their visibility in trade shows but to have the big dog pull out because they dont need it or because of cost is irresponsible to the industry.

@chubby170: Using SSD is a fundamental leap forward in terms of loading times, and is not really comparable to the marginal improvements between previous generations. Really, it almost eliminates loading times.

Either you aren't aware of the difference between SSD and HDD, or you are just playing dumb. My guess is it's the latter.

@andrewryan123: Lol, you proved you are dumb, yes. I made a comment saying that its no surprise a new system is faster with load times. Then you comment saying that the new hard drive it uses makes it faster. Lol, this is the same thing that I said as its no surprise, new system using newer technology makes things faster.

For you to feel the need to argue me and to argue the same point just makes you sound dumb.

@chubby170: long load times have been a part of console gaming for two decades and still are to this day. This new one has a technology that basically eliminates them.

You’re all in this comment section comparing it to the improvements of previous generations. That’s just a silly take.

@andrewryan123: Its a silly take to say that each generation loading times get faster? Well thats the reality chief. For example, pop in skyrim for PS3 then do it on PS4, definite decrease in load times.

Now, if you were to take a large game on PS4 and have it run on a PS2 or PS1, it would take much longer.

The problem people have is they are impatient and want no load times. 20 second load times on huuuge game on a PS4 doesnt bother me at all. The the PS5 will have load times. The games will get even bigger and then you will have them.

But yes, each generation load times certainly get quicker.

@chubby170:

Pointless comment. the PS4 didn't load games any quicker than the PS3 did, and the PS3 had the same long-ass loading times which the PS2 had, which in turn was as slow as the PS1. 4 generations or 25+ years of playstation, and we're still living in 2019, where Red Dead Redemption or GTA V loading screens take 45 seconds. Same with Black Ops 4... the menus are sluggish asf, and took longer than many PS3, PS2, PS1 games.

What Sony is promising is 10 times faster loading, that's f*ing incredible.

@sealionact: I'm saying my PS4 takes forever to load games. Same games can take up to a minute or two (GTA, Red Dead, Blackout). I can't remember how long PS1 games took to load as it has been 20 years since last time I played, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't significantly longer than 1-2 minutes. Correct me if I'm wrong... and even if I am wrong, is it 1000x slower? cause the PS4 is like 1000 times faster than a PS1 in terms of CPU/GPU power. Did PS1 take 15 hours to boot up FFVII ?

@chubby170: bloodborne has 20+ second load times which is longer than many ps1 games. load times have gotten WORSE in many instances as time has gone on when we talk about AAA, demanding games. 1s load times is unheard of and revolutionary. ps5 is going to do something special in this regard. no idea why people don't find this news exciting... what is wrong with you people?

So the 'death of consoles' didn't happen as predicted years ago before the XBone and PS4 launched? Every site was posting articles claiming these would be the last traditional consoles since everything was moving into the cloud

Look forward to what's coming for gaming next gen. It'll genuinely be interesting to see what microsoft will 'boast' about in response.

Old tech now, pc's and cartridge based consoles have been using this method since atari days.

Ok its more expensive but hey nothing revolutionary and were gonna end up paying more for it

PC USERS: Get super excited when the next gen video card and CPUs arrive.

CONSOLE USERS: Get butthurt coz they've owned their current gen console for 'just' 6 years.

@5tu88sy:

PC users got excited for the mish mash of next gen video cards? People thought Nvidia RTX cards were a scam since so few games supported ray tracing. Then Nvidia launched the GTX 1660, which throws a curve ball at PC users and made people choose between a newer card or buy a cheap GTX 1070ti. Console users are lucky to not have to deal with such madness.

@5tu88sy:

Why would you be butthurt? All the games are tailored to your specs. I own a PC, and I can honestly say, I'd be butthurt when a game you're looking forward to has specs that your current PC can't match.
