PS5 Pro Revealed For $700, Launches In November

Sony has finally unveiled its more powerful PS5, but the price is higher than some imagined it would be.

Following plenty of speculation, leaks, and reports, Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro. Revealed by PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny during Sony's "PlayStation 5 Technical Presentation," the PS5 Pro is said to be close to "doubling the power of the PS5." The system costs $700 USD and is not equipped with a disc drive, nor does it come with a vertical stand, which is sold separately. Preorders open on September 26.

The system includes 2TB SSD--an increase from the standard PS5--as well as the usual inclusions of a DualSense wireless controller and a copy of Astro's Playroom (not to be confused with the just-launched Astro Bot). It launches on November 7 through PlayStation Direct and a variety of retailers around the world.

Cerny called it the "most powerful console" Sony has ever made. In terms of the design, it looks similar to the existing PS5 and is the same height, but with a racing-stripe-like cutout on the side. But it's the internals where the differences are more pronounced, as Sony has upgraded the GPU to offer significantly more power.

Cerny spoke about the common choice of Performance mode (to prioritize frame rate) vs. Fidelity mode (to prioritize visual quality), and how Performance mode is chosen roughly 75% of the time. The goal with PS5 Pro is to eliminate the need to make that choice, thanks to the upgraded GPU, an AI-upscaling technique called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (which sounds similar to things like Nvidia's DLSS, which can offer major enhancements in PC games), and improved ray-tracing effects.

The PS5 Pro costs $700
The PS5 Pro costs $700

Here are the key technical details for the PS5 Pro, as written by PlayStation:

  • Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.

While the PS5 Pro does not come with a disc drive, it is compatible with the $80 disc drive add-on.

Some of the games that will take advantage of the PS5 Pro features include Alan Wake 2, Assassin's Creed Shadows, Demon's Souls, Dragon's Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. These games will be designated with the wording "PS5 Pro Enhanced."

The PS5 Pro also includes a feature called PS5 Pro Game Boost, which enhances compatible PS4 games for PS5 Pro--in total, more than 8,500 games are compatible, Sony said. Supported PS4 and PS5 games "may" see improved performance, while some PS4 games will run at higher resolutions.

Other supported features include Wi-Fi 7, VRR, and 8K output. All three of those will require other compatible hardware in order to leverage.

The PS5 Pro is compatible with existing PlayStation peripherals, including PS VR 2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Pulse Elite, Pulse Explore, and the Access controller.

"Our PS5 journey would not be possible without the millions of players that have supported us through the years and have shared with us their love of gaming. Whichever console option players choose, whether it’s PS5 or PS5 Pro, we wish to bring everyone the very best gaming experience that fits their needs," Sony said.

The PS5 Pro's existence is in keeping with tradition for Sony, as the company previously launched a "Pro" version of the PS4 in November 2016. The PS4 Pro launched at $400, when the PS4 was $300. This time around, the price gap between the consoles is bigger, as the PS5 goes for $500 and the PS5 Pro will sell for $700. You can see how that $700 price compares to past consoles when adjusting for inflation.

Prior to the announcement, Hideo Kojima's assistant uploaded a photo of the developer playing Death Stranding 2 with what looks to be a device hidden under a cloak. Many believed this was a developer's version of the PS5 Pro.

The announcement of the PS5 Pro comes not long after Sony had a success story with the launch of the critically acclaimed Astro Bot. This game helped improve the vibe surrounding Sony following the abrupt shutdown of Concord.

I will give you a hint of why it is more expensive than the PS5 'slim' digital model:

- Larger iGPU.

- More RAM.

- 2 TB PCIe 5.0 NVME SSD.

- NPU (for upscaling).

- Dedicated RT hardware.

- WiFi 7.

- Not sold at a loss.

- Inflation.

@hjroman: keep dreaming this is Sony being bullish and no should support this or buy this. It's so sad to see people even thinking about buying this right now. If you have a PS5 and then buy this plus the components as well. You could have built an epic PC that would last you 2 or three Generations of consoles before you had to upgrade.

@ceelogreen94: An 'epic PC' is not meant for couch playing in the living room. By the way, you cannot keep a price tag of $500 forever (unless you degrade the quality over time or there is no inflation).

@cyrezeraser: so the cost of a PS5 500.00 then the cost of a PS5 PRO is 850.00usd after taxes. That the total cost you have just spent 1350.00usd all together and you are telling me that you cannot build and epic PC for that price. Ok.....

@mogan: can you count if not please this conversation.

So let me break this down in numbers you can understand then. Depending on what state you like in or country.

700.00 + 10% sales tax " state and federal " = 770.68 + 80.00 + 10%=88.20

final cost = 858.88

@ceelogreen94: You're including the price of the disk drive to make the Pro seem even more expensive than it already is? If we're including peripherals , an "epic" PC is always going to be a pricier than a PS5 Pro. I prefer PC gaming, but I'm not going to pretend it isn't the most expensive option.

Also, multiple mods have asked you not to be rude at this point, so you can consider this the last time. Please, keep it civil.

@mogan: I'm including all the components unless you " already have them" There is just no way around the cost climbing in to the $800usd range with this box at this point.

Let me be clear I'm not advocating a campaign of what console is a better choice at this point neither am I saying this box DOA at this point. However, what I'm saying is Sony is ripping people off with this console at the price point it's at right now. This is unproven tech at this point and from what we all saw there is little to no difference in graphical fidelity over the base PS5. We also know that games will continue to run 30FPS on this machine as well.

People who are buying this are literally throwing away money on a system that is no better than Series X by 10-20%. Sony is testing the waters for the PS6 at this point that could cost in between 700-800usd if people buy this product.

@ceelogreen94your logic doesnt make sense. you're assuming everybody already has a ps5. you're also not forced to buy the pro so you can keep your ps5 at $500.

you're thinking that if they were to charge $1200 up front then it would be a PC which is true but the original $500 was 4 years ago. can you buy a PC right now with $700 that will equal the PS5 in performance?

@cyrezeraser: No I'm showing you the total cost that you would have spent if you so called " upgraded" this system if you already own a PS5.

The cost doesn't make sense at all here. You could have built a pc that would best that machine. Also the PS5 is no more powerful than XBOX Series X but at least 10-20% which makes the XBOX Series X the better buy in this instance.

I am enjoying watching this. The fanboys asked for a PS5 Pro and now they are behaving like entitled crying babies because Sony didn't give them a subsidized device. Moreover, most of them talk as if they had any expertise on manufacturing and components costs or have leaked documents that prove that the PS5 Pro is overpriced.

@hjroman: I said the same thing I have an Xbox Series X and a PC. I am really happy that XBOX didn't do this, this Gen because there is no need for it and with my PC I have never been locked out good games to play, when I choose to play. The sad thing is I can afford it and use it as a tax right off for business if I chose to.

It's pricey for a console, but I'll buy one. I already bought a GPU for $1600 and the Pro isn't even half that price. Already sold my Xbox and I'll sell the regular PS5 too, so that offsets the price a bit.

@Dezuria: It doesn't offset the price at all. You have to pay online and that is a factor as well. Don't buy this at all unless you want to see 900.00usd PS6 console in 4 years because they are testing the waters right now.

@ceelogreen94: That claim about $900 is just speculation. In the other hand, you cannot keep the $500 price tag forever. Let me guess, you feel entitled to a subsidized PS because of your loyalty.

@hjroman: I am firmly against this and Sony period because they have done nothing but rip people off this Gen. So far from what I can tell about Sony players they just don't seem to care about that. Sony has done so much damage to the gamming community and yet people seem too just overlook it because they are the market leader and make a few decent games.

There is no reason on god's green earth that would and should have released a console for 700.00usd into the market. The system is not even that much more powerful than the Series X and will not run games that much better at all. For the price of the console plus all the components if you don't own them already you are looking at 900.00usd investment that isn't much better than the original console at this point.

@ceelogreen94: According to some insiders and experts, in the beginning, the regular PS5 was sold at a loss (like the Xbox) and just recently, due to improvements in the manufacturing process, they are even (with, maybe, a little bit of profit). So, in my opinion, $700 is a price point at which they can make a profit and is a niche product. The problem is that people have become accustomed to subsidized consoles and manufacturers have kept the $500 price tag for too long. Watch DF or search 'Are game consoles sold at a loss?'.

@ceelogreen94: PCs for the living room? I don't think so because that would be cumbersome for the average user. From Wikipedia: "In most cases, the Steam Machine vendors simply found that there was not as great a market for the product, since it was trying to bridge consoles and home computers, while they found most consumers would flock to one extreme or the other".

But keep telling yourself that more sales means better. It’s the number 1 go too argument from ps fanboys and in this case just means more sheep fooled!

I guess this is what the future holds, so I will see you guys on the PC side.

No point of paying more for hardware AND having them hijack your online games when they raise those online prices again, which will be a revolving door of increases.

It sells for 780, which is kind of insane when you compare it to the PS4 Pro I’m playing right now which was 400.

Microsoft said four years ago that they wouldn’t really be able to cut costs and that’s obviously pretty much held true. Yeah it’s more powerful but for $280 more, four years later, and mostly it’s just relying on the extra hardware to do AI upscaling and what not on which isn’t bad but…

$700??? Yeah, gtfo. Same money will buy a better gaming pc with cheaper games and significantly more content. The only thing you'd be missing is 1st party exclusives. I enjoy console gaming and have been a loyal PS supporter for years, but know your audience.

In the last 4 years PS has increased PS Plus 33%, controllers 25%, disc-less console 64% (PS5 vs Pro), and games 33% if they pull off an $80 GTA6 like rumors suggest.

Goodbye PS. I'm not getting a 2nd job for ya.

If you replace the 2tb ssd with a 1tb ssd the cost is about $100. So it's basically a $600 console.

The price is too high. A price like 800 euro and not even a disc reader included is way to expensive for me. :/

But being able to get both performance and fidelity at the same time is nice.
