PS4's Everybody's Gone to the Rapture Has a Hidden Sprint Button

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture has a sprint button, but it currently doesn't let players know about it.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture arrives on PlayStation 4 today, and it appears to be well worth checking out. One thing that might stand in the way of your enjoyment, however, is the game's movement speed. As it turns out, there is a sprint button in the game, though at no point does it tell you that (yet).

Developer The Chinese Room's creative director, Dan Pinchbeck, has addressed the movement speed issue in a new blog post, revealing that holding down the R2 button allows you to move more quickly. The game fails to mention this because it was a late addition; Rapture originally included sprint as an automatic feature that kicked in when you walked forward for a few seconds.

Pinchbeck explains that Sony Santa Monica playtested the game not long before its code was finalized and found that players wanted control over when they sprinted.

"So together with Santa Monica, we made a late call," he says. "We replaced the autosprint with an R2 trigger hold, keeping the gentle ramp up to main speed. This then needed testing, because it potentially threw out all of the pacing we'd been working on for the last year, plus could cause issues with accidentally parkouring into places you couldn't escape from, creating game-breaking bugs. All this took time.

"And then suddenly launch was right on top of us, and something had been missed. The controller icon in the options menu was missing the sprint instruction, and it hadn't been localized."

While localization takes only a day, changes to the UI--built in Flash--would require longer. "[T]hat would mean a full round of testing before creating a patch--about 4-5 days through the global QA pipieline, which we're doing now, but wasn't ready in time for release."

As a result, those who navigate their way to the game's online manual will be aware of the sprint button, but those who only do what the game explains won't be aware of the sprint button, at least until that patch arrives.

"We probably should have announced the run button before launch, but we didn't," Pinchbeck continues. "That was a bad call, and we've paid for it in the reviews. But the most important thing is that we get the word out to players, so here we go--although we'd love you to take your time and explore Yaughton at a slow, steady pace, if you need to backtrack or get around more quickly, hold down R2--it'll take a few seconds before you are running fully, but it will speed your movement up."

Whether sprint is enough is another matter. GameSpot's review notes the slow movement speed, and even after trying out the sprint button, our reviewer found it it's "not a huge improvement." Even so, Rapture is still worth a visit.

--its tricky
--you dont run immediately(or even speed up)
--you have to hold the button as you walk
--and slowly you will gain speed(though not exactly a fast running pace)
--also you cant run whenever or 'anywhere'
--it has to be out in the open

--what i think is HILARIOUS
--is that the GS reviewer gave this game a 9/10
--and apparently they didnt even know there was a run button
--CROCK OF S!!!

--i played the game for 3.5 hrs without knowing i could run
--i almost fell asleep
--simply put
--without the option to run
--there is NO WAY IN HELL that this game was a 9/10

They said on their blog that the slow walking was so they could control, the pace of the game, but that's like saying adding more enemies increases difficulty.

It's artificial . The pace of the game should be dictated by how we are able to figure out puzzles and where to go next from the clues we are given, not by how fast we walk. They are artificially lengthening the game by deliberately making us walk slower. And the "sprint" button is more like a slightly faster walk.

A game where you... um.... do nothing, but walk around and.... it got a 9!?!?!? Gone Home got 9.5(still too high of a score) and even Gone Home has way more action than this garbage- You pick up stuff and stare at it! It's something!

@3cupsofflower: I don't think this ever claimed to be an action game.

That Said, I don't have an opinion on the Game really as I don't have a PS4 so can't play it.

But it "looks" amazing from what I have seen. I hope my Brothers and Sisters Gaming on PS4 enjoy it !!

@ltjohnnyrico: A video game usually involves some kind of action. The most action you can get out of this is sprinting slightly faster than a snail.

@3cupsofflower: Oh no! A game without action! It's almost as if the medium is expanding to encompass multiple avenues of storytelling! The sheer audacity is mindboggling.

@3cupsofflower: I'm pretty sure the only hurt feelings here are yours. Gamespot will be uploading more reviews soon without consulting you on what score they should give each game. To spare you from further confusion and outrage I recommend leaving Gamespot and starting your own blog where you are free to score and review each game according to your own views.

@jellyman68: how did you deduce his ignorance? I don't get why you're using that word to describe a person based on a single comment on an online forum.

@bobbo888: The first sentence and a bit give a pretty good clue. Either he/she doesn't understand or just deliberately ignores the fact that the review is based on the reviewer's opinion and not theirs. The reviewer has their own criteria for what constitutes a good game and saying the score is too high or too low misses the point of the review.

@maltnut: It's reasonable and actually good to have these kinds of arguments though, and I believe we do have to draw the line somewhere. I think everyone's opinion on it should be noted, not just the professional press.

So all these reviewers were playing it and at no point it crossed their mind to see what R2 might do in all their frustration with the movement speed?

@PayneKiller: From the sound of it, the increase in speed is so gradual and minor that most people wouldn't have noticed unless they held down R2 for extended periods and paid extra attention to determine if their speed had changed.

To be fair, the R2 button can be hard to find... if you never held a controller before.

Makes you think Reviewers don't actually review games very well :P. Not my sort of game, but if you are going to make a big thing about not being able to run you could atleast check every button, it's not as if a controller has loads of buttons...

I love that people who haven't played through the game are complaining about it.
Go watch fucking Lord of the Rings or something, you whiny dorks.
I guess that's why you make so many assumptions about sex . . . because you've never fucking had it.

@sanstupid: I know, right? And other things you haven't had, like cancer or a tax audit, stop complaining about those too! Because without actually having had them, you don't know for sure that they suck... You're only assuming...

And assuming is for whiny dorks, like this guy said...

@sanstupid: Rapture's controls somehow turns into Lord of the Rings and an assumption about gamers being virgins. There is much hate in this one. I suggest anger management.

I don't want to join the ranks of negativity, so I'll preface this with...

The game looks gorgeous and may in fact be the best looking console game so far (and rivaling MANY of PC's best looking games).

But, beyond that, I can't find a single thing interesting about it. Graphics are a great thing, but the story, gameplay, and pacing here just aren't enough for me. If this was a free download for either my console or PC, I'd probably download and forget about it (to be fair, it's what I've done with all of Xbox's free games so far, and many of my purchases off Humble Bundle and Steam sales).
