You can try out the remaster of the competitive disc-throwing game this summer.

The cult hit competitive game, Windjammers, is in development for PS4 and Vita, and today developer DotEmu announced that it'll have a closed beta on PS4 this summer.

Although it seems a bit unusual for an old Neo Geo game to have a beta, the developer said in a press release that it's necessary to test out its online and matchmaking functionality. It will run from June 8-12, and it includes the game's new online ranking system.

Now Playing: Windjammers Enhanced Port Gameplay

If you want to get into the beta, you have to register at Windjammers' website for a chance at a code. Registration is open until June 5.

The original version launched back in 1994 for the Neo Geo, and the remaster was revealed at PSX last year. The new version includes online multiplayer, five game modes, competitive leagues, and rankings. You can check out gameplay from the PS4 version in the video above.

I like this game, played it a few times back in the late 90's but I don't see the obsession with this game. It seems to famous, just for being famous ever since Giant-bomb always go on about it.

When Data East sadly closed their doors, all the top games were mentioned and Windjammers was hardly mentioned. Hardly anyone heard of it.

@malachi: I had to ask about it a few months ago, as a big NG fan back then, I had never heard about it until years later and since I don't go to giant bomb didn't know it's meme status. I asked why not super dodgeball instead, everyone was like **shrug**. To me that's a better game....honestly Windjammers is slightly more advance Pong (or Air Hockey)....just saying.

@uncle5555: Problem with "Super Dodgeball" is that since it has various versions including the original arcade and the similar NES port, it's much tougher to unify a fan base as each will be arguing "No, MINE is the one we should be playing!"

Apart from the different language settings and titles, "Windjammers" has been — until this port — the same no matter where you play it.
