PS4 Getting Critically Acclaimed Journey This Month

[Update] July 21 release confirmed, Cross Buy support included.

[Update]Sony has confirmed the PlayStation 4 version of Journey will be released on July 21. The re-release will support cross buy, which means those that purchased it already for PlayStation 3 will be able to download the PS4 version for free.[update ends].

Last August, developer thatgamecompany announced that it was bringing its PlayStation 3-exclusive game Journey to the PlayStation 4. Now, the game's PS4 release date has been apparently leaked as July 21.

Found in the PlayStation E3 Experience guide on the PlayStation Docs website, the game page for Journey shows the date as coming later this month. The guide breaks down the different games appearing at E3, and it looks like the release date for Journey was probably published by mistake.

The PS4 port of Journey will be pretty similar to the PS3 version, but the game will run at 1080p and 60 frames per second. It was announced back at the Gamescom conference last year.

When it originally launched on the PS3 in 2012, Journey was met with critical and commercial acclaim. It was the fastest-selling PlayStation Network game ever at the time, and it currently sits at a 92 on Metacritic. GameSpot gave it a 9, and you can read our review here.

Sony hasn't commented on this leak, yet, but we will update this story if the company clarifies.

The final piece of the Journey Collector's Edition (http://www.amazon.com/PS3-Journey-Collection-Playstation-3/dp/B008CP6RWU) buyers getting screwed for buying a physical copy. Cross Buy for Flower and Flow came a while ago and now Journey.

All it would take is a quick check to verify the disc is in the drive of the PS4 to allow physical copy owners to enjoy these games on their PS4s. Or maybe even sending in a Proof of Purchase to enable the digital games for an owner's PlayStation Store account.

I guess this is what I get for being a sucker for video game soundtracks. Good thing the Journey soundtrack is amazing.

Journey is a game that had such a prolific experience for me that I refrained from playing it more than once, just for the sole reason that I dont think the experience I had could ever be truly recreated. Its a cherished memory that I dont want to spoil because repeat playthroughs didnt pan out quite as magically for a number of different factors.

Journey is one of only a handful of games I have played in the entire history of console gaming that have a real impact on me and stick in my head long, long after the game has ended. There are many different qualities to a good or even great game...but only a rare few in my opinion are capable of connecting on a deep emotional level.

This is the most beautiful game I've ever played. It is quite the experience. Would it be ridiculous if I used this games re-release as my excuse to get the PS4? I was going to get one eventually anyway. :P

@suicidesn0wman: Gamespot on the whole doesn't seem as professional as they used to be, the are articles shorter, too many titles phrased as questions and they don't seem to separate editorials from articles. I miss the times when GS was a journalistic website and wasn't trying to be too hip.

@Halloll: I think there are two factors in play here, starting with the fact that in general, many of todays 'journalists' just aren't that good. The second being that many of us average joe's out here are not that far off in the quality of the content we could post.

I have felt this way for a long time, much like the comment made by Phil Spencer about gamers running the game companies, so too should they run the gaming sites. I'm actually building a gaming website as an alternative to this site for that reason, run by us, where user likes & dislikes determine who gets the spotlight.
