PS4 gets 1080p MMO War Thunder on June 3

Gaijin Entertainment announces release date for North American version of free-to-play game.

Gaijin Entertainment has announced that its World War II MMO War Thunder will be available in North America on the PlayStation 4 on June 3. The game is already available on PS4 in Europe, and globally for PC. The game is a free-to-play title across all platforms.

War Thunder for PS4 runs in "majestic 1080p" and includes the recently released Ground Forces expansion. In addition, Gaijin Entertainment said cross-platform play between PS4 and PC will be introduced "in the very near future," though no specific date was provided. War Thunder features 350 different planes, 150 multiplayer missions, as well as a single-player campaign and squadron battles.

In all, War Thunder boasts more than 7 million players worldwide. Players can duke it out through aerial combat or on the ground with tanks, thanks to the new Ground Forces expansion. The PS4 version of War Thunder also uses the PlayStation Camera (if you have one) for head-tracking.

One of the reasons why War Thunder is not on Xbox One, according to Gaijin Entertainment CEO Anton Yudintsev, is because Microsoft does not allow cross-platform play between PC and Xbox One. This is crucial for a game like War Thunder, he said, because the install base of the Xbox One (somewhere around 3 million units right now) is too small for players to have an enjoyable experience.

So since cross platform play is being introduced will it be possible to log into the game on PS4 using an already existing PC account? If i cant access my PC account on PS4 which already has countless planes, tanks etc unlocked as well as premium I will likely stick to the PC version.

Cross platform is the one of the only reasons I regret getting my One. This game looks boss, and FFXIV is an awesome game that I gave up when I chose the One over the 4. Here's hoping that whatever dumb ass reasons MS has for no X-playform play gets thrown out with the baby.

There are different nations with their own tech trees, as well as stats/leaderboards, and customization options. You can also create your own camos/skins for aircraft and tanks and even your own missions, maps, and aircraft using the CDK.

I dislike Microsoft just as much as the next man, but there was no reason to state that the install base for Xbox One is "somewhere around 3 million". Come on, that's a stat from almost 5 months ago. Surely they're at least around four and a half million by now, and that will only grow with the new SKU next month. I doubt I'll get one as I don't trust the company but I dislike "journalism" that is biased.

With regards to the actual subject of the article, I've been excited for this game since I first saw it and glad I finally get to fire it up on my PS4 Tuesday!

Well, if the journalist decides not to give MS the benefit of the doubt, what is wrong with that? It is their fault that MS refuses to publish their sales figure? Who knows, if more journalists do this then maybe MS will give us the actual sales number.

Fair point. It's not his fault Microsoft doesn't want to get embarrassed by releasing sales numbers.

I do, however believe differently than you. That information, even though it's Microsoft's latest number (which I agree is pathetic on their part), is outdated. The sales figure was in parentheses in the article and could have easily been left out but the journalist opted instead to include information that he knew was not a very accurate portrayal. If I were being objective I'd just remove the part in parentheses.

Anyone who cares enough about gaming enough to be reading these articles already knows the Xbox One is lagging behind in sales. There are plenty of spots to take jabs at Microsoft that are more legitimate than that one.

This is the first title I've heard back up something we talked about a few months back -- the defection of games from XBOX due to low install bases. Unless MS can push a lot of boxes soon, they're guaranteed to lose more and higher profile online titles -- simply because they don't have the numbers to make a successful online ecosystem viable (same reason TITANFALL 2 is going to be cross-platform).

MS did the right thing by dropping Kinect, but did they do it in time?

you combine those 2 things with the fact Microsoft won't allow cross platform servers and anyone who get's this on the xbox could find them selves a bit lonely compared to the combined PS4/PC community
