PS4 Firmware Update Will Bring HDR Support to All PS4s

That includes your existing PS4.

One of the focal points of today's PlayStation Meeting event was on HDR, or high dynamic range. While it was shown off primarily with regard to games running on the newly revealed PS4 Pro, it's actually something that all PS4s will soon be capable of.

Sony revealed it plans to release a firmware update next week that introduces HDR support on all existing PS4s--even the standard PS4 model. No further details were shared regarding exactly how this will work or if there's some caveat that applies to HDR support on standard PS4s.

No Caption Provided

Sony Worldwide Studios chariman Shawn Layden reiterated this immediately after the event, stating, "We will have a firmware update which will take every one of the 40 million-plus PS4s across the world, make them HDR-ready, make them compatible. Of course, Slim will do that--the new form factor for PS4--and PS4 Pro. So right across the board, anything that has PS4 on it will support HDR."

We'll have more details on this update as it's announced.

There's currently no games that have HDR and most likely, there won't be very many Games for OG PS4 that will support HDR. Whole point of HDR and 4K is so that ppl would go and buy PS4 PRO AND PRO Games ( which will be the same game but made to run on PS4 PRO ONLY). PS4 games will not work on PS4 PRO.

@Coolboy420x: What are you talking about? There are not games that only work on PS4 Pro. Do your homework.

HDR requires a HDMI 2.0 socket ... the PS4 has a HDMI 1.4 socket. Unless Sony plans to pull some kind of magic technique out of their ass, it's impossible for them to upgrade existing PS4s to HDR ready.

Awesome bought my samsung JS7000 10 months ago and it has HDR, I sprung the extra couple hundered bucks for the JS model vs the UN model and now I am glad I did, after using youtube app and seeing the color difference hot damn... I was orginally disappointed in the lack of darkness in the blacks (when I bought it I thought black is black but boy was I wrong) but with the HDR it deepens the black much darker and the shades and depth of color is amazing, I did buy samsung cuz of how rich the colors are and didn't realize HDR made that much of a difference

HDR support is pretty cool but to get the most out it you will need to have a HDR TV. From what I was reading earlier it's a relatively new thing in the market and most people would have to had bought a TV pretty recently to take advantage. The fact Sony is even adding support this early in the game is quite impressive.

@hystavito: 2016 tvs after CES meeting in january give HDR standards for AV industry, so this year models should have HDR standards, most of them at least !!!

and 1080p TVs are not 4K TVs, isn't ?! so, the answer is none !!!

@sticktaler36: It's what makes 4K TVs look so good! I just bought a 4k Vizio 40" TV and it doesn't have HDR. I'm so pissed I thought that 4K was what I needed but really, HDR is actually the thing you want when you buy a 4kTV. If your 4K TV doesn't have HDR, trust me- you will not see much of a difference when upgrading from 1080p to 2160p (4k). HDR makes ALL the difference!

@sticktaler36: It increases the dynamic range of colours, which essentially renders richer, more realistic, colour gradients. So, basically, it'll give textures and effects more oomph and pop. Obviously, HDR TVs will have the most benefit, but it should even give regular TVs a slightly richer contrast, especially when it comes to black levels.

@sticktaler36: Yeah, only 4k TVs have HDR, for the most part. There MIGHT be some very new 1080p TVs that have HDR, but I dunno and kinda doubt it. HDR is a "4k tv thing." Also, make sure you get a TV that supports HDR10 and not just "Dolby Vision," another form of HDR. It looks like both Sony & MS are going with HDR10 for the "HDR-standard" so it's gonna be the norm. Some TVs support both forms of HDR, some only have DolbyVision OR HDR10. Make sure you get a 4K TV with HDR10 unless you want to be majorly disappointed when you get a PS4 Pro!!

I can't see many developers taking the option to implement HDR on the standard PS4, MS added extra power to the X1S to facilitate HDR so I can only assume developers will need to dial back the graphics in order to achieve HDR on the standard PS4/Slim with no power boost.

@pspearman: the ps4 already has that extra power though. Wasn't the xbox one s ungraded by like 7%? So it's gpu is running around 1.4 tflops now vs ps4s 1.84?

@pspearman: HDR is all or nothing, and is just colour depth. It won't be a big strain at all, as it's primarily monitor dependent.

If this is exactly how it sounds then wow. I am an Xbox One owner (Don't feel the need for an S as I don't have a 4k tv) and this is so surprising and seems like an Xbox S killer. Touche Sony.

@fijimeister: Sure, but it's not there to compete with the S, as that's what the Slim is for. Also, neither the Slim or the Pro have a 4k drive, which even the S has.

@fijimeister: you can play 4K games or watch 4K content without 4K BD drive, trust me !!!

think about it, after 10 months of HDR standards were released, you still wonder how 4K content is delivered ?! like other "customer" from GS ... i'll not saying more ...

@fijimeister: You could potentially play games at 4k. I really cant see how the ps4 pro could do much beyond 4k 30fps. So its more likely you will see 2k upscaled to 4k in an attempt to get fps closer to 60 for games where that matters like battlefield, titanfall, call of duty, etc.

@Asukafan2001: I personally would much prefer 60fps to 4k (Even if I had a 4k tv) After getting a gaming PC it just makes such a beautiful and noticeable difference. Now the only reason I turn on my Xbox is for Games with Gold or online games so I can play with friends.

obviously this will only be applied to people with compatible tvs like HDR TVs, if you have a standard ps4 and a 1080p tv this probably doesnt matter which is a bummer. This only means you can have a standard ps4 and a HDR tv to take advantage of it.

@smokerob79: it also means that if you own a 4k HDR TV and a vanilla PS4 you can enjoy HDR - I'm sure there are plenty of people to whom that applies.

@xantufrog: I htink the idustry is going to be curious how they acheive that since the standard right now for HDR is an HDMI 2.0 and the OG PS4 along with the OG Xbox One only have HDMI 1.4

MS changed to HDMI 2.0 with the S release, and included the high speed cable needed.

@xxmavr1kxx: it's been rumored for a while that the PS4's controller was capable of meeting 2.0 spec, but had simply been released before 2.0 had been finalized. The speculation on the webs is that this firmware update news confirms that. But... who knows
