PS4 And PC Horror Game From Amnesia Dev Gets Weird New Trailer

Narrator of the new Soma trailer seems to have lost his mind a little.

24 Comments

Frictional Games, developer of acclaimed first-person horror titles Penumbra and Amnesia, has released a trailer for its next game, Soma.

The trailer, which you can watch below, features a narrator talking about traumatic events in a strangely cheery tone, while viewers are taken on a quick tour through a series of creepy environments.

Naturally, this all crescendos into the appearance of a disturbing looking figure and a panicked escape from something unseen.

SOMA has been in development for nearly five years and takes place in an abandoned science facility. Unlike most horror games, it trades jumpscares for building up tension slowly and putting players on the very edge of their seats.

For more on the game, read a our Soma preview from last year.

Frictional Games has confirmed the Soma release date as September 22 for PS4 and PC.

Im gonna get this on my PS4 but i bought amnesia for my pc. Anyway i haven't quite fully got into Amnesia yet because it seems boring. Does anyone know, does it get better? Beginning seems slow...

@skiggy34: A:DD, much like what you read in the article, is a slow-burn horror game. Frictional requires players of their games to invest in the atmosphere for an hour or two before they start really messing with you. Yes, it gets "better" in the same sense a novel gets "better" once you read the first hundred pages.. Instant gratification, this is not.

@divinejester: sounds like it matches up with the video's punchline, "all that hope...wasted."

They need to hire a professional voice actor. This guy sounds like your average Joe who was payed 10 bucks to read the script lol

@Moonco:

Because people in real life sound like voice actors not every day joes. Make sense.

Underwater horror game? Looks cool... I just hope its not boring & all that tension build up pays off. I always have to have something to kill and something trying to kill me, spooky environments n stuff just doesn't do it for me. The whole underwater setting is definitely cool & more original though...I wish we saw more stuff like this in games.

Good. Jump scares are over-relied on. It's a cheap tactic in horror movies used as a crutch for people that can't build tension and fear any other way, and the same goes for games. In fact, building tension and fear via something other than jump scares is so much more effective in games because feeling that way gives a sense of immersion unlike any other genre, complemented by the fact that you're in the environment going at your own pace and interacting with whatever you want to interact with.
