Progress Report: Xbox 360 Backward Compatibility

The Xbox 360 offers backward compatibility for Xbox games, but how well does the feature actually work?

By Sarju Shah - posted June 13, 2006

No Caption Providedhen Sony included backward compatibility for PlayStation games on the PlayStation 2, it took the easy path and simply included an original PlayStation chip inside the PlayStation 2. With more than five years between the two consoles, Sony had a lot of time to make the original PlayStation chip smaller and cheaper to manufacture, thereby making backward compatibility an almost trivial feature in terms of effort.

If Sony skated by with a triple lutz when it included backward compatibility, Microsoft tobogganed on gravel, uphill. Microsoft made a crucial error in not purchasing the intellectual-property rights to the hardware behind the original Xbox. Intel owns the rights to the Pentium III CPU variant that resides in the Xbox, and Nvidia owns the rights to the Xbox GPU and the audio chip that encodes Dolby Digital on the fly. Without ownership of these key components, Microsoft would have to provide backward compatibility the hard way--software emulation.

To make the situation even more difficult, the Xbox 360 hardware has practically nothing in common with the original Xbox. Microsoft replaced the original Intel CPU with a custom-made triple core IBM Xenon processor, and the Nvidia GPU was replaced with the 48 pipeline ATI Xenos GPU.

If you've tried playing an Xbox game on the Xbox 360, you've probably noticed that the game actually thinks its working on the Xbox. The Xbox Live menus are of the classic Xbox variety, not newfangled Xbox 360 dashboard menus. In this way, the emulation is completely transparent. The Xbox 360 is able to pull it off most of the time, but a minor hiccup occurs every now and then. During the course of our testing, we encountered a few issues such as frame-rate drops, video tearing, and even Xbox Live connectivity issues.

Microsoft maintains an Xbox 360 backward-compatibility list, which originally contained 207 Xbox games. Curiously, even though Microsoft added and removed games over time, the list remained at 207 games. Recently, as in June 13 2006, Microsoft added twenty-one games to the list.

No Caption Provided

Our first experience with backward compatibility on the Xbox 360 was less than stellar. On launch day, many of the games we tried worked improperly or not at all. We decided to revisit Microsoft's list and picked a few of the more popular games to test, and we also chose a few to test at random. We then played each game on the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox to see if we could notice any major differences in performance. Also, we tried to play online, or download content from Xbox Live, whenever possible. Unfortunately, we did not have time to play through every single game on both consoles, but we did spend enough time to get a good feel for each game. This does mean, however, that we might have missed bugs found in later areas of the game. For example, Forza Motorsport worked fine in the maps we tested, but sports editor Brian Ekberg was none too enthused at the performance of Forza Motorsport on the Xbox 360 when he raced on a track that we hadn't unlocked yet. As much as we'd have liked to play through each game to ensure full compatibility, we were forced to factor in time constraints.

For the most part, the games we tested on the list performed well. Almost all of the games played close enough to the original Xbox that we were hard-pressed to tell the difference between the platforms. The 360 does provide the added benefit of improving image quality by enabling antialiasing; but some games look dramatically better, we've noted that where applicable. A few of the games we played had more serious issues, such as frame-rate drops and graphical anomalies, but the most common bug we encountered was inconsistent full-motion video playback. It seems the Xbox 360 has trouble handling Xbox video.

Read on to check out the full results of our testing and to see some image quality comparisons.

Overall, our tests show that Microsoft seems to be doing a decent job at providing backward compatibility with the games on the list. Unless we had an amazingly skewed sample, we'd say that 91 percent or more of the games on the list should work without a hitch. There are many games we'd like to see added to the compatibility list, such as Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. We're going to guess that some games might never make the list (such as Psychonauts or Panzer Dragoon Orta), but we can always hope. If Volvo: Drive for Life, Barbie Horse Adventure, and Egg Mania can make it, anything's possible.

Shaner258 KOTOR is horrible on my Xbox 360, don't know about the second one. KOTOR 2 is horrible aswell. during combat if theres more than 3 enemies on-screen it juttters and stalls, prevents you from attacking, and you just get killed lol. i found a way around this though, draw the enemies away in ones and twos and dispatch them.

Fable: The Lost Chapters must have some serious bugs. I notice the dropped frame rates, and audio pops. But those were superficial compared to the real problems. In the first half of the game, I've experienced freezing issues, but after a reboot I was able to continue. But as I got further into the game, the freezing started to happen while I was trying to save (not very often though). But now (I'm about 3/4 done) the freezing is far more frequent. And by this, I mean it's to be expected. It's even to the point where it corrupts the save spot where I was trying to save, rendering it useless. I thought that it could be just be a bad disc, but seeing as I've tried 3 different discs, it points to the emulation software in the the 360 as the culprit.

Star Wars KOTOR II does not "play great" like Gamespot says. The random audio buzzes and glitches drove me nuts, and this was only after 5 minutes when I was creating my character. GTA San Andreas doesn't "play great" either - the Xbox 360 has problems drawing trees and buildings off in the distance, making the whole city look weird. Good thing I still have my original Xbox.

I compared side by side shots of Lego Star Wars I on the original XBox in 480p vs. 1080i on the 360 at http://www.velociworks.com/2006/04/xbox-360.html I am amazed at how much improvement the anti-aliasing and higher resolution the 360 brings to these games. Very good. Now they just need to support some more games. Like Psychonauts, Brothers in Arms, CoD, Mercenaries, Republic Commando, XIII, Van Helsing, Xmen Legends I & II, Black Hawk Down, KotOR I & II.

the only games left that need to be on Xbox 360 are Brothers In Arms: Road to Hill 30, Brothers In Arms: Earned In Blood, Psi-Ops, and Deus Ex Invisible War. what microsoft should be focusing on is getting these games on and just fixing the ones that aren't working well.

(BMFibz: Half-Life 2 is on the supported game list and it doesn't work at all. It just goes through the valve logo clip then the loading screen comes on but once it is loaded the screen just goes black and stays that way). If you change the display setting on the 360 to 50Hz then it should work fine... i had same problem, and it works now!!

The backward compatibility is alright but their is very annoying factors to it it doesnt allow you to play every old xbox game you have which i think its unfair on the fans "us" with sony ps3 you will be able to play every game you have ps1/ps2 and ps3 games i just think microsoft are scamming us overall first we have the very lame microsoft points to buy stuff mostly stuff you dont need and as if the games dont cost enough then we have to pay for the xbox live which i wouldnt say is that good. It really is true and upsetting nothing absolutley nothing comes free with microsoft....

Quoting Denbot "the 360 is 1 big let down, ms talk of their ass, pc wont catch up for another 3-4 years hmmmm lets try 3-4 months lol. Dont even try playing splinter cell on ur 360, the coop mode never works and thats the best part of splinter cell 3 as its the only new thing to the game. PS3 IS GONA KICK ITS ASS FACT and ms know this and they are scared thats y they keep sayin everything sony says is a pack of lies and the ps3 cant do any of that. Im sorry but 4vs4 on most high demanding games just isnt good enough when u can get 150 players servers on pc games, and 64player servers on COD2 and only 8 players on 360 how does that compare. PC already kicks its ass and ps3 is gna leave it in the dust. FACT!!!!!!" Well hello there DUMBOT!Seriously out of the hundreds of comments that I have read on this topic this has to be the most hurrendeously stupidious post I have ever read In my life! Reason #1:Everything you just said is an opinion you fool not a fact, a fact is actually the knowledge or Information based on proven occurences. You were just babbling about how good you think the PS3 is when we're on the subject of the 360's backwards compatability list and you're obviously in the wrong Forum here dumbass. And when you talk about "ms talk of their ass" you're the one who's really talking out of your ass, cause no one here really understands you.And do you actually have proof that MS "is "scared" thats y they keep sayin everything sony says is a pack of lies and the ps3 cant do any of that." I believe you don't. AND THE PART THAT REALLY GOT ME MAD WAS THIS:"Im sorry but 4vs4 on most high demanding games just isnt good enough when u can get 150 players servers on pc games, and 64player servers on COD2 and only 8 players on 360 how does that compare. PC already kicks its ass and ps3 is gna leave it in the dust. FACT!!!!!!"--Okay I doubt the PS3s servers are "gonna kick ass",because you don't really pay for playing with others, unlike XBL where your money goes to a good cause, which are to have better servers=no lagging, And again what you said is not a "FACT!" it's an opinion!

those people saying "play the games on Xbox miss the point, and should not comment out of fear of looking dumber. The Xbox is a Brand, it isn't like GameCube and Nintendo DS, which are 2 different formats. Being that they were establishing a brand, obviously when making X2, they should have placed BC on the "No-brainer" list. A LOT of people sold their Xboxs in for the 360, to save on costs. It was a lack of foresight on MS' part, and those people who use the first argument are justifying that lack of foresight.

Yeesh, can't always be a crowd pleaser. Unlike the PS2 and the PSOne, or the wonderful Gameboy the 360 has to use an emulation program to understand its older counterpart. The hardware wasn't designed with the intent of backwards compatability, but to streamline next gen improvements: anti-aliasing, bloom, HDTV, soft shadows, improved AI, online capabilities, etc. Because the hardware doesn't match, it means sometimes one operation has to be converted into two or even three operations to work - resulting in a slower performance. Some games for the XBOX used code that took advantage of certain elements that don't exist on the 360, making a lot of games incompatable (for now). The good news is that the games that do work can undergo 360 improvements such as anti-aliasing effects.

I think a good place to start with making games backwards compatiblity list is to start with the games that have the most replay value...such as LIVE games. Conker Live and Reloaded, Unreal Championship 2 L.Conflict, and Street Fighter Anniversary Collection are all NOT compatible. Those are some good online games, especially Street Fighter:I feel were not getting SFCollection because of the Upcomming SF2Turbo comming to dashboard arcade. This list is really sad, I really have NO motivation to play any of the possible games backwards compatible right now. Some of the games they did bother to backwardscompatibleize are really odd and unpopular for the most part. Definitly Sony did a much better job in Backwards compatiblity and it would be very nice to have all the 360 games ready to go on 360. If there were more GOOD 360 games out there right now this would not even be an issue to me as it shouldn't be because NEXTGEN is supposed to be HERE...

I don't gett all this 'Backwards Compatibility is a MUST!' crap. The PS2 was really the first console to offer any form of backwards compatibility, and it was never an issue before that. With MS not being able to put an original xbox along with the 360 guts inside the 360, they are doing the best they can. The route they took, or had to take, aint perfect... but at least they are doing something to allow people to play Xbox games on the 360.

Microsoft is a complete scammer to say that the Xbox 360 is backward compatible. I honestly do not like that way they have approach this idea, to shove an emulator into the 360 at the last minute... then saying in their early press conference last year, "And Yes, Xbox 360 will be compatible with original Xbox games." They had no intention whatsoever to have backward capability in the first place. All they had in their mind was to release their new awesome looking Xbox 360 before their competitors. And then when many gamers started to ask about backward capability before their 1st Xbox 360 conference they decided to go for the easy option and saying yes first, after then slamming in a cheap emulator. Not only this, but the emulator only does a 'half' decent job. Firstly, not being able to play every single orignal Xbox game...however saying in their conference that "Xbox 360 is backward compatible" giving us the idea every game would and should work. Secondly, some games run very very poorly using it. Micrsoft never really plan things ahead of themselves unlike Sony, where they think like 10 years ahead. Even though I have a 360, I honestly dislike very much how Microsoft have made bad descisions into many aspects of their new system... most commonly their backward compatablity. Thank you, Ric

Two games that they should put in the backwards compatible list should be MGS:Substance and James Bond Everything or Nothing.

i think they are doing their best and we should all just chill out and let the quality of the system as of now marinade, and we should just let it soak ....just let it soak and we will be pleased with the outcome microsoft will give.

I have seen a few glitches and artifacts in games like Doom 3 and Halo. I hope they fix these anomalies since I will be trading in my old Xbox to get some of the new games coming out for the Xbox 360 in the Holiday season.

Okay, now I get what Edlover was trying to say, he just forgot punctuation. And...spelling I guess. But it doesn't really matter, the comment still made me marginally stupider by virtue of being unfortunate enough to read it.

Okay, Edlover? Do you speak English? Or any discernable language for that matter? I'm not saying what you said isn't right. It's right, confusing and messed up, but right. But saying that you will be able to play super Mario bros on the playstation 3? That'd better be a joke man. And the genius directly below you? Denbot? Yeah, you're just a mess dude, I can't even put it into words.

the 360 is 1 big let down, ms talk of their ass, pc wont catch up for another 3-4 years hmmmm lets try 3-4 months lol. FACT!!!!!!
