Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, the long-awaited crossover between the two franchises, has finally arrived in North America, almost two years after it was originally released in Japan. The first reviews went live this week, and we've gathered up a selection for you to peruse below.

The game is a collaboration between the respective developers of the two series, Level-5 (Professor Layton) and Capcom (Ace Attorney). It consists of separate sections that each play similarly to games in the two series; unfortunately, the consensus seems to be that it doesn't totally capitalize on the crossover potential. Even so, the reception has been generally positive, and it's good to see the game released here after such a long wait.

You can check out a sampling of reviews below. For more, check out GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

  • Game: Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
  • Developer: Capcom/Level-5
  • Platforms: 3DS
  • Release Date: August 29
  • Price: $29.99

GameSpot -- 8/10

"Layton vs. Phoenix Wright is a long game--at least as long as a Professor Layton game and a Phoenix Wright game combined--and relatively little of it is genuine crossover. But that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. What is here is big, it's often silly, and it's sometimes unwieldy, but it's rarely anything less than engaging thanks to some great execution on tried-and-tested ideas. It's Phoenix, however, in his element in this magical world, that well and truly steals the show." [Full review]

USGamer -- 4/5

"Personally, I enjoyed the light romp through Layton and Wright's magical adventure. It's good to have a bit of change from the deadly serious or overly involved games I usually play; outside of the lengthy Witch Trials, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright is the kind of game you can pop into for 5-10 minutes to make yourself feel smarter." [Full review]

No Caption Provided

IGN -- 7.8/10

"This unique crossover is a powerful draw for fans of either series, but it doesn't make the most of its potential. It sacrifices some of both series' challenge, and the alternate-universe story feels like a missed opportunity where there could have been more meaningful interaction between the worlds of Wright and Layton. The witty dialogue writing, however, is as charming and enjoyable as ever." [Full review]

GamesBeat -- 85/100

"Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is an extremely satisfying pairing--if not actually a blend--of the puzzle solving and courtroom twists from the two series. The game's high production values add charm and character to the experience. The compelling storyline and animation make up for dialogue that might linger a little too long and puzzles that might speed by a little too quickly. If you like both nonviolent handheld heroes, 'Take That' copy of Layton vs. Wright, without hesitation." [Full review]

Joystiq -- 3.5/5

"A bad ending doesn't have to ruin a game, though, even (or perhaps especially) if the story wasn't all that strong to begin with. Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright drags on too long, but even towards the end it's enjoyable at its basest of levels. It's an entirely safe crossover that doesn't merge two gameplay styles as deeply as it could, and it's a shame to miss on that potential. However, the ultimate result is two series' with enjoyable characters and a penchant for madness coming together, and a crossover that doesn't take risks with tried-and-tested play. It also has Layton and Wright performing synchronized pointing, and it's almost worth the objections just for that." [Full review]

Shacknews -- 8/10

"Reservations aside, Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney comes out with a game that in many ways improves upon both formulas. It may be too bogged down in its own story and look slightly dated, but the pure puzzle mechanics still work both in and out of the courtroom, and are bolstered by the crossing of ideas. It's more than the sum of its parts, and as a result is a nice treat." [Full review]

Why is "Versus" in the title if Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright are working together peacefully in this game?

LOL @ people bashing at this game because of the animeish artstyle.

Wake me up when cartoons have as much mature themes as Psycho-Pass, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ergo Proxy, or even Naruto.

Exactly, American cartoons that are catered towards adults tend to be more comedic or over the top in how obscene and lewd they are.

Death Note was one of the most thrilling animes I've watched (then again, I'm not particularly a big fan of super serious type animes, Death Note just piqued my interest and I ended up getting hooked). Hunter x Hunter is one of the most intelligent series I've ever experienced and is really the only anime/manga series I still actively keep up with.

@abHS4L88 @93BlackHawk93 Anime based on shounen manga is usually NOT mature, it's written with boys and young teen males in mind. There are exceptions like Death Note and Rurouni Kenshin (at least what I've seen so far of the anime, I've never read the manga.)

While some characters in the world of Naruto are mature and compelling, antagonists included, the titular character is the most stubborn, childish, foolish, annoying character I've seen come out of Japan. Overall it's not a mature series at all.

I'm well aware, but you even agreed that Death Note is mature. There are plenty of "fanservice" type animes, as well as the ones you listed, but there are plenty of ones that are intelligent and really stimulate your mind while watching it, Hunter x Hunter being another one, which is why I really love the series (I like to describe it as an intelligent Naruto).

I believe Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist, and the Miyazaki films (especially Princess Monoke) are good examples also. I don't really watch anime anymore and most of what I liked were more upbeat and silly animes so I can't really think of many examples.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Agreed. While many Japanese cartoons are more willing to show blood and dismemberment or let their characters die, I'm not sure I'd call them all "mature."

There's plenty, but if you only stick with your XBox, you won't really be exposed to much. Need I remind you that the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th generations of gaming were dominated by Japanese games?

Taste is relative, you realize. Looking at my collections over the years, I have very little from Japan. And yes, I've owned a lot of Japanese consoles.

I'll give you gen 2, but in the west, the Japanese have never dominated gaming otherwise.

It is, but you speak as if your opinion is fact and you've already proven that you have a strong prejudice against Japanese products (although from Gen 3-6, the best consoles were mainly Japanese, obviously you weren't going to stop yourself from buying them otherwise you wouldn't be able to play most videogames).

Gen 2? You mean before the gaming crash with the Atari 2600? in Gen 3, what were the biggest games? Mostly platformers/side scrollers and adventure games, who were the biggest developers for those types of games? Nintendo, Capcom and Konami just to name a few. Moving to Gen 4, biggest genres? Sidescrolelrs again, fighting games and RPGs, who dominated these genres? Nintendo, SEGA, Capcom, Konami, Squaresoft and Acclaim.

When Sony entered, most of their teams were Japanese. Yes Gen 5 started seeing a rise in Western games, but it was still Japanese games that were the forefront, Gen 6 continued tipping it more towards Western, especially with the introduction of the XBox and explosion of GTA, but it wasn't until Gen 7 that Western gaming truly dominated.

Naw, he's right. Anime in games looks cheap and unplayable. How does anime have a following? It was invented with the lowest quality animation tools with little effort and art.

it's called not being an ignorant hater and learning that there are strong qualities to every major form of entertainment out there.

But since you CLEARLY know so much about anime, please share with me your proof that it was "invented with the lowest quality animation tools with little effort and art."

Also this isn't anime, this is a Japanese videogame, but only an ignoramus would make such a statement.

Have you seen early Japanese cartoons? They're awful. No detail, no expression, no mouth syncs, and a primary color palette that rivals a three year old's Crayola box.

And if you can't see the art style in the games isn't anime - then it's time for an obvious animation lesson for you.

@Sevenizz

Anime refers to Japanese animated shows/movies. By your logic, manga is anime, no, manga is manga, anime is anime. And in case you don't know, manga refers to Japanese graphic novels or comics. You can say that this game has an anime style, but it doesn't make it anime. If a movie were to be made from this game, it would be considered anime.

At least you've just proven that you're a prejudice jerk. I can easily find American cartoons (and European cartoons) that fit that description you gave, does that mean all American and European cartoons are terrible and can't be considered art?

If you think the following animes shown on these sites: << LINK REMOVED >>

<< LINK REMOVED >>

have "No detail, no expression, no mouth syncs (obviously you're thinking English dub, which isn't the fault of the Japanese), and a primary color palette that rivals a three year old's Crayola box." then it's quite obvious that you have a prejudice against anything Japanese and therefore anything you say about them has absolutely no validity or merit.

At least you've admitted that you choose to be ignorant. You didn't even have to do research, I provided the link for you but oh well, another example of someone who has knowledge readily available for himself yet refuses to actually learn and believe in his own "fantasy." It's quite hilarious that you try to push your opinions as fact when you flat out admit that you have little knowledge/interest in the subject at hand.

Although concerning your last statement, that's what I said genius, but it doesn't make it an anime.

What the hell kind of tangent are you on? This game uses an anime art style. I don't care for it. I don't need a history lesson about it - or care to learn anything about it. It's not ignorant if it isn't a part of my culture or everyday life - and no one needs to.

It's ignorant because you're generalizing an entire form of art due to your extremely narrow-minded view of it. You called this game anime, which it isn't because anime doesn't refer to videogames.

If you don't care for it, then why do you bother checking these articles out? Clearly you hate the style, yet you somehow feel compelled to come to this article and even stated that you downloaded the game as well as saying "I want a Japanese game that's not Mario that's good." well if you want that, you're going to have to do some research. No one's going to spoon feed you everything you want.

Anime is just as diverse as American cartoons, it's clear you dislike the more bright and cheery style, yet you've decided that that's what all anime is. I wasn't trying to give you a history lesson, just wanted to show you the diversity that the medium has to offer. It's up to you whether or not you want to remain ignorant (and this applies to anything really).

Ace Attorney is one of the best written stories in a videogame I've ever experienced and easily my favorite story based series. Every entry not only tells a thrilling story, but is also filled with intense moments, mindblowing twists and hilarious dialogue/character interaction. The gameplay is pretty interesting and unique to the series. I didn't know what to expect picking up the first title but I was immediately hooked and would order the sequels immediately after finishing each title.

The original trilogy is coming out on the 3DS soon so I recommend starting there. Even what's considered the weakest entry (Apollo Justice, the 4th entry) I still found thrilling and exciting (just not as much as the trilogy or Dual Destinies).

Remember that it is text heavy, but oh boy, that dialogue is something else. The game also really makes you think, trying to deduce who's the real culprit and where the case is leading (head's up, first 2 cases, culprit is completely made obvious, but after that, I would say only 2 cases within the rest of the series make it obvious, pretty much every case has a shocking "turnabout") and it's amazing that Capcom has managed to keep the story and writing really strong across 8 entries (5 main Ace Attorney entries, 2 spin-off Ace Attorney Investigations - the sequel you will have to watch on youtube since it was never localized and I just finished watching it today, HIGHLY recommend it, and this crossover).

Each game, on average, took me around 30 hours to beat so the value is definitely there. Dual Destinies is on sale right now on the eShop for $18 so while it will probably take you a while to get to that entry, I highly doubt it'll be that cheap for a while after this sale ends.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well, speaking of the Ace Attorney series, the original trilogy of games is available for download on the Wii for, if I remember correctly, $10 each. That's how I ended up playing them, and it's probably easier and cheaper than tracking down the older DS carts. You lose portability, but if that's not a big deal, I'd highly recommend giving the series a try. Figuring out the order of the second and third game is a little wonky, but it's easy enough to look up.
