Price Hikes "Across The Board" For Games In 2023 Predicted By Analyst

"Gamers are likely to see prices go up across the board in 2023."

In 2023, the video game industry will see prices increase "across the board," according to one analyst. Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games said in an interview with GI.biz that fans should expect price hikes for games, hardware, and subscriptions as studios attempt to make up for rising costs.

"Not all studios have hiked prices to keep up with the rise of production and other costs in game development so far, but gamers are likely to see prices go up across the board in 2023," Toto said.

Microsoft, for example, has already announced that it is raising prices on its AAA games in 2023 from $60 to $70. All of Microsoft's games are also included with Xbox Game Pass, and some believe that subscription service will see a price increase, too.

Toto said of his predicted price increase, "I believe this trend will not only affect individual AAA titles but also subscriptions and hardware, especially from Microsoft."

The Nintendo Switch, however, won't see a price increase in 2023, Toto said. Things could change, however, if Nintendo releases new hardware, as has been rumored for some time.

In 2022, Sony raised the price of the PlayStation 5 in many places around the world (but not the US), in response to global economic issues. For the Xbox price increase, Phil Spencer said "something had to give" when Microsoft looked at its balance sheet. Nintendo is affected by growing costs, too, but the company is not passing those costs along to the consumer and is keeping Switch prices intact.

Before this, publishers like EA, Take-Two, and Activision raised game prices from $60 to $70.

What I do now is just have patience, wait for a price drop and do not buy those that depend on the internet meaning MP play and no SP or campaign as when the game is considered dead, and the company do away with the servers so is the whole game.

Thems seasonal sales looking better and better now. I see myself pre-ordering little to nothing anymore.

People will simply stop buying. Why purchase broken, full priced games when you can wait to purchase them when they are discounted and patched? Couple that with PS Plus/Gamepass and the industry will be digging its own grave by increasing an already expensive hobby.

yeah I agree. I rarely even buy games even at current price, at increased prices its just a no go. Actually I greatly reduced my purchasing over the last 10+ years when they went mostly digital for all games, the price increase will just reduce my urge to buy them even more.

It feels worthless to buy a game these days since you don't even own it. It's just a digital license now which you can lose at anytime if Steam goes down or you lose your account from hacking or a perma ban from any offense Steam could throw at you.

The fact that you have to pay even more for a game now and yet distribution costs are at an all time low since most games are digital is very disappointing. If anything games should be much less money now since they don't need to make game discs anymore or spend retail space in a physical store to make game sales.

Bottom line here, digital ownership is a joke, and more expensive games that you don't even own is a worthless offer to me.

@Yams1980: Yeah some people thought by going digital they will cut some overhead costs and the savings will be passed on to the customers and there are a very few that did just but not the majority as they still increase the prices and there is no guarantee that you will have access to your game after the company cease to exist and this also pertains to games that has the physical media as one still must connect to finish installation.

*shrug* Whatever. Just wait for a discount. Games are still routinely dropping into the $20 range. I haven't paid more than $50 for a single game this gen.

@Barighm: Yep, that is what I do and I may have to wait awhile but I have a very huge backlog of games I have to play or complete.

It's going to be ironic when game revenue crashes. gaming publishers expect everyone to give near 100$ for games even though a recession is all but certain then they ask why is no one buying games?

@zflowes: same will be said or is being said already about the GPU market.

These jokers at Nvidia and AMD are overcharging for their video cards... and yet wonder why their sales are so far down.... maybe cause they charging now near 1000 USD for a mid range 3070 card? which it is barely even a 3070 if you compare how cut down it is compared to other xx70 cards of the past. Pretty much all reviews for the 3070ti say it runs fine and all, but is just way overpriced, like at least 200+ dollars overpriced for what it is.

@Yams1980: So true as the scalpers taught them something, sell your cards at higher prices as they saw people doing so during the GPU crisis. Heck even the lowest tier cost a lot.

@dushness: Back in those days, that was the Toys R Us price. In the little game shops, the price was whatever bargain you struck with the guy behind the counter.

@dushness: I remember paying £130 Sterling for Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition on the Megadrive (Genesis) in 1993.
