PlayStation Trophies Getting Overhauled Ahead Of PS5 Release

An update to the Trophy system raises the level cap and aims to make your Trophy progression more rewarding.

Sony is introducing a few changes to its Trophy system, just ahead of the PS5 launch. These changes will be reflected in your current Trophies, which will carry into the next generation.

According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, the Trophy level is getting a big boost. Currently Trophy leels range from 1-100, but following the update it will be 1-999. The greater range means that once the update goes live, your current level will be automatically converted to an equivalent place in the new level rating. For example, Sony says, if your current level is 12 it will be converted to the low 200s.

This also comes with a reworked Trophy calculation structure that is aimed at being more rewarding, letting you progress through stages more quickly at the start and consistently throughout. The Trophy level icons are also getting a revamp that will be reflected on PS5 at launch, and on the PlayStation App with a later update.

Sony notes that this won't impact previously earned Trophies, and no Trophy requirements are being changed with this update. The update will be available mid-week throughout North America and Europe.

No Caption Provided

Meanwhile, another Trophy feature appears to have leaked early. The French PlayStation Blog mentioned Trophy tracking, for example letting you see how many artifacts you've gathered out of a total number. That feature was said to be for PS5, but that language was removed from the post.

Unlike Trophies, your saved games may or may not come with you to PS5. The PS5 does have a solid slate of new games coming, which you can preorder now. Meanwhile the console remains difficult to find for preorder, but keep an eye on our PS5 preorder guide for updates.

It's 1 million gamer score, to enter the mile high club.

And 0.10 cents for every login, bing search, game played earn 10 and you earned $1 not bad. But not great, stil better than nothing.

A decent attempt to bring more attention to the leveling system that I'm sure most people, even trophy collectors, don't even look at. I've always liked the trophy system because platinums show how many games you've completed (in terms of trophies) at a quick glance. So I'm glad this "overhaul" is just focusing on the leveling and not doing anything to platinums or how they're earned.

Every time trophies or achievements get mentioned there are always people that ask ‘Why?’ or ‘Who cares?’ or ‘What’s the point?’, and ‘They’re meaningless’.

A guy I know tries to Platinum every game he owns. He has over 70 Platinum trophies.

Me myself, I like them for one reason and one reason alone. I use them to track when I first got a game to when I actually finished it. I make sure to get at least one trophy or achievement on the day I get a game to see how long it took me to actually get around to playing it. My trophies don’t so much reflect my accomplishments, so much as they do memories. I can check a date and remember why I completed a game so fast, or why it took me three or four years to actually get a chance to finish it. Without getting too sentimental 😂

Have always been a fan of trophies, even though you don't get anything more than that 2 second hit of endorphins on the platinum. My Bro and I have been competitive over the last few years on our trophy level so there's that added element. The only thing I don't like about them is they force you to play games in an unnatural way, I've always preferred a stealthy approach but you are occasionally forced to use the loud weapons or rack up combos etc.

It was mentioned in an email which I received from Sony today so it's not really a leak.

I also got an email regarding the new T&C's for PSN today. Detailing the changes would be something I'd be interested in reading if GS could do a feature?

@Terminator95: The sad thing is, all those trophy whores will read this and still not really what a dumb as hell and pointless system this is. "We're gonna make it more rewarding by blowing up the numbers." Well, hard to make something more rewarding that never offered any reward whatsoever.

It would've been nice if the whole system got reworked to have actual meaning, but it is instead more profitable to ensure consistent progression. It's all about making the system more exploitative.

Ideally, trophies and achievements would have been an iteration on the leader board concept, with players constantly competing at the friend, local, regional, national, continental, and global level for game dominance. Instead, it's all about the mindless accrual of senseless accolades that are so inclusive they're utterly meaningless. 🏆🐍🥇

They need to fix the PS Store. Can't filter the store for sh*t.

Sometimes you can't even filter PS3 from PS4 games.

@gifford38: Sony had this until recently, on their Sony Rewards site. They took it away at the beginning of this year, but you would get something like $5 for every 100 silvers, $5 for 50 golds and $10 for 10 plats.

@gifford38: Yeah, right. Would be even better if Sony handed out free games randomly just because you've been such a good boy.

This achievement crap was purely designed because the folks who came up with it now how the brain's reward circuitry works. They know that as long as you present people with a nice little picture and call it "achievement" or "trophy", people will feel rewarded, even if there's absolutely no reward whatsoever included.

They don't need to actually give out any rewards because this system was designed for morons anyway. If you want rewards go collect point with payback or some crap like that. They at least reward you by giving you a 1% cashback in exchange for all your data. Totally worth it. All of these reward system are only designed to take advantage of morons. They never provide anything of value, at least not for the sucker who signs up for it.

so getting trophies or achievements are for morons? so both series x and ps5 are designed for morons? why am I a moron to say they should give a free 5 bucks or a game or what ever is dumb?

but yet they can take my money to play online games? on top of my internet fee.

maybe I want something back for spending money on them every single month.

on top of the 500 bucks for the system and now 70 bucks for games.

and if I go gamepass or psnow that's another fee I have to pay.

it be nice to get at least get an award after playing hard on a game that I had to pay money for and if its an online game i have to even more.

quit calling the gaming world morons. because if your a gamer then your a moron to.

@gifford38: I don't fall for every crap people offer me "for free". "Look, a free PS+ game. You only have to pay a monthly fee for the service, which we of course keep increasing over time as we add more "free" stuff to it that nobody asked for."

Most people are morons. And you certainly are one if you think that Sony would offer you an actual reward for chasing after in game trophies. They are the dumbest and most pointless thing invented for the dumbest kind of people. People for whom something is worth doing simply because someone else said so. If there's a trophy saying "spend 500 hours doing a monotonous task you'd never do normally" you'd do it, right? Gotta get that platinum trophy after all. When's the last time you've played a game purely for the enjoyment of playing it? For many trophy whores out there that doesn't seem to happen anymore every since they've added trophies. Now all they do is chase little pictures, spending countless hours doing things in games that they've never do otherwise, just to collect trophies that have absolutely no meaning. If you don't think that's pretty dumb, then what does that say about you?

thats there choice to go for that trophy. it entertaining for some but it does not make them dumb. some people like the challenge. why we have games like dark souls. people like the challenge.

I don't go for the trophys. If I unlock them all without trying then great. I was just saying it be nice to have this options. trophy and achievements are popular but again it does not make them dumb.

it gives you reason to go back to playing a game you normal would have nothing left to do.

how many people back in the day played for high scores in arcade's were they dumb to?

all the person that likes to collect ever item in a game are they dumb to?

people do this because they enjoy it. when the last time you played a game to enjoy it? every time I turn on my console to play a game. same with those trophy whores are having fun because if they were not having fun they would not do it.

@gifford38: It would be great for that to happen but the issue would be hackers. People have already been able to falsify their trophy/achievement history and with a reward scheme it would only get worse.

@gifford38: Microsoft has a quest system that basically does that with challenges each month tied to gamepass games with daily/weekly/monthly quests. The daily stuff is usually just play a game pass game but the weekly and monthly quest sometimes need you play 3 or 4 different games for certain things. Each quest earns points, you trade points for rewards like $5 giftcards or 1 month gampass sub or whatever.

@fitzy_2812: Man, what a dumb as hell idea. But of course people will participate in it. Sure, why not play some games for a few minutes each that you'd normally have zero interest in? All for some fucking $5 voucher.

The industry knows exactly how to exploit our brain's very primitive reward circuitry. But sadly the normal population has no idea about it. Good thing we're getting taught so much useless crap in school while stuff like that gets ignored.

@fitzy_2812: The most important aspect is that the program actively encourages people to try games and genres that they might not normally play.

The same can be said for the few truly great achievement/trophy lists: They encourage new play styles, skill-based difficulties, or handicaps -- not just normal progression nor grindfests.

@gifford38: A long long time ago when the xbox 360 was out msoft did something similar. There was a program where you signed up and had to gain a bunch of achievement points to cash in for various prizes. The highest prize was a copy of fusion frenzy 2. I ended up getting an xbox arcade game like joust or something. I still wish they'd bring that program back.

@StonerDemon: Yeah, this is what I was finally able to snuff out after being Achievement-obsessed for over a decade... That FOMO of having to beat my whole friends list EVERY month, and of having to 1000/Platinum every game I liked.

It was WAY harder to quit than party supplies BITD. ...because all this cost was TIME. Had I been enjoying those extra runs with every game, it'd be different.

But ultimately (just recently) it was Battle Passes / Season passes that cured me of the Cheevo Addiction. The Fallout 76 1st season was so fkn repetitive and grindy that I not only quit playing the game, I finally had a gut-level confirmation that "Yeah, this just isn't fun AT ALL."

Fixed it for EVERY game. I don't even look at the Leaderboard nor achievement lists now. Only Season Pass that I still find fun is Fortnite's, because they constantly come up with new things to try each week.

@videogameninja: I always liked the Trophy system more personally because of the Platinum Trophy itself. It's easier to tell at a glance how hardcore someone was with a game just by platinums obtained. If someone had a boatload of Platinum trophys you knew right away they where a completionist.

@videogameninja: I like gamerscore more. I used to be heavy into hunting for achievements and 100% a game but then most of the time i end up not enjoying the game and ends up being a chore, so I gave up and just play for fun now. Gamerscore of 203,000, took me 13 years lol.

This is why i enjoyed the Trophy system more than the Gamerscore system. Platinums indicate that you have all trophies of a select game (minus DLCs obviously) and a account level. Pretty cool if you ask me.
