PlayStation Move's debut 'modest' in US, big in Europe

Wedbush estimates just 300,000 units of motion-sensing system sold in US; Sony Europe chief boasts of 1.5 million sold in EU, says demand "far in excess" of estimates.

As part of yesterday's September US game sales report, NPD said that game accessory sales increased 13 percent last month thanks in part to the launch of the PlayStation Move. However, neither the industry research group nor Sony Computer Entertainment America released any hard sales figures for the system.

1.5 million Europeans have been Move-d by Sony's motion-control system.
1.5 million Europeans have been Move-d by Sony's motion-control system.

That said, a report from Wedbush analysts Michael Pachter and Edward Woo pegged the motion-sensing system as having a "modest" debut stateside. According to their estimates, the Move sold just 300,000 units following its September 17 launch in the US, including PlayStation 3s bundled with the system. (The month saw 312,000 PS3s sold overall.) However, Wedbush's latest report predicts that October will see "strong sales" of the system as the holiday season approaches.

Meanwhile, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe chief Andrew House was much more bullish on his company's product. Speaking with the Bloomberg news service, the executive said that Move saw "very significant sales in the first month since launch, somewhere in the region of 1.5 million units for the new controller across just Europe." SCEE also distributes products in the entire EMEA region, which includes the Middle East, Africa, and Australasia.

House says the Move has done so well that supply might not be able to keep pace with demand. "The initial sales response has been so far in excess of our initial plan that we'll probably be looking at accelerating production," he boasted.

The PlayStation Move launched in Europe on September 15, North America on September 17, and will launch in Japan on October 21. The system, which consists of the PlayStation Eye camera and LED-capped wand controllers, is available in a variety of configurations. Controllers are sold on their own for $50, bundled with the PlayStation Eye camera and minigames compilation Sports Champions for $100, or with all that and a 320GB PlayStation 3 for $400. Although games like Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 sell for full price, a line of PlayStation Move games sells for just $40 each.

think dzimm is just enjoying the attention and not the debate. He has to know he is wrong but is plainly a fanboy and if he is older than 12 its just pathetic, if around 12 maybe he should have his mom monitor his internet habits. "just saying what everyone is thinking."

@dzimm From a critical standpoint: You're wrong, if you haven't even tried the controller you cannot possibly even have the slightest idea of what you're talking about. Anyone that has tried both the controllers say they have a huge difference. I've tried 'em both, I'd claim Move is a lot more precise, but that's my opinion. Go ahead and check some videos on GameSpot on these non-biased critics and they tell you the same thing. It's not like I'm reading it so "strongly". I just people those think they're so right and never accept to believe anything that others say. Also, even if - theoretically there were no differences. I'd still prefer Move over the Wiimote because I don't really enjoy Nintendo's first party games Nintendo relies on so much. Personal opinion, once again, but knowing it's Sony, they'll bring out something more interesting for the core and hardcore gamers withing these upcoming months.

@ dzimm and the PS3 is NOT an overprized Wii. It's better than the Wii. Wii doesn't play blu-ray, games are better looking, better download content. The only reason I have a Wii is for Mario, Donkey kong. (Reminders of my youth) :)

@ dzimm the move can more then the wii- remote: moving in depth (with just one motioncontroller). Play 'Tumble' and you see the difference. Also the reaction of the move is more precise. I have both Wii and PS3, and my opinion is that the move is better. Sorry nintendo fanboys...

I've never liked the idea of motion control but Move is amazing. So precise - play Tumble and you'll see what motion control can be like - certainly better than the wii. If Kinect is as precise it will be fantastic but not being touchy-feely will be just plain weird for some games.

TevoxZi: "Youre not right, you're simply being ignorant and acting like a fanboy." On the contrary, I'm just bringing a dose of reality and objectivity into your little Sony world. The fact that you're reacting so strongly to my innocuous comments speaks volumes about the extent to which you are forced to agree with what I'm saying. Fact: Move does not offer any substantial advantage over the Wii Remote in terms of game design or player experience. Sure, Move might have a technological edge (it is newer technology, after all), but so what? Furthermore, any advantage Move might have over the standard Wii Remote pretty much evaporates once you attach a Wii MotionPlus or use the new Wii RemotePlus which will incorporate Wii MotionPlus technology into a standard sized Wii Remote. Case in point: there is nothing that Sports Champions does that Wii Sports Resort doesn't. This isn't to say that Move is a bad product since it does seem to mostly deliver, but you also have to admit that it basically turns the PS3 into an overpriced Wii.

I very honestly don't think Sony cares that highly about the launch sales... they're thinking longer-term and prefer to let it sell itself over time. Better plan than the $500M Kinect launch marketing campaign, as far as I'm concerned. It is what it is-- an add-on for the PS3. Just like the original eyetoy, network adapter, and the never-exploited HDD that were add-ons for the PS2. Obvious the network plug later became standard and the idea of NOT having an HDD sounds silly now, but 8-10 years ago these were bold ideas. I'd have to assume they intend the Move work out the same way.

The move is too much for now. 120 quid for a pair of wands and "nunchuks" is silly. I could buy 360 for that! (the bare bones one of course)

@dzimm My daughter has a Wii and she loves it but their is no precision to it. The move gladiator game and other games that are with sport champions are spot on. The move does what the wii claimed it could do. I enjoy it, don't think you own one so how can you troll on it if you never played it?? And yes every demo I played lagged, but its a demo...The only demo that did not lag was time crisis which personally thought was fun, wish they would do House of the Dead series all on 1 disc.

@TevoxZi I also like how dumb the term is. Such as Im sure many gamers that played console games on an arcade style stick said the NES wasnt real gaming because it used a control pad. Also the N64 introduced consoles to four control slots rumble and 360 control sticks PS gamers said it wasnt real gaming. Every time a new controller is introduced some people come out to say I dont like that controller and claim the old controllers are superior using vague words like "real" or "pro".

I'm a guy who has had absolutely no interest in Motion Gaming EVER... But I had to buy a new PS3 and it came with the move included. Move is not so bad. The ps-eye is very hard to get right initially, but once you find the sweet spot in your room, the set-up works really well for all the games out thus far. I don't think I'll ever be a motion gaming fan, but it has surprised me... and my 5yr old absolutely loves it! I don't think all the MOVE bashing is really necessary. But the tards will come out to play no matter what.

The Wii does motion-sensing while the Move does motion-tracking. There's a difference there and I find the former to be better from a game perspective. Anyway, Motion Plus does, in fact, recognize Z-axis.

@dzimm You're not right, you're simply being ignorant and acting like a fanboy. I already posted you the differences, which haven't truly yet been utilized much as the controller was released only A MONTH AGO. Tumble for example already does something that Wiimote doesn't, depth. The Z-axis. Have you or have you not noticed the controller goes further as you move it closer to the camera? This cannot be done with Wiimote as it only does X and Y. There's already something to corrupt your "Nothing", and as far as I know, in gameplay you cannot utilize the camera on Wii either as there simply is NONE. The precision is another thing, once again Move has been in multiple reviews been rated the better one out of the two in that comparison. Camera > Sensorbar as obvious as it was.

"But sure, if your Wii turns golden by talking bs about the other system's controller, then go ahead." Uh-huh... and what, exactly, can Move do that a Wii Remote can't? I mean in terms of gameplay. What is the significant difference between playing with a Wii Remote and playing with Move? Give up? I'll give you hint: nothing. Don't fight it. You know I'm right. ;)

Give it time. It'll pick up significantly. It really is quite intuitive. Makes the Wiimote look like Mario Paint in comparison. And I own both.

yea, I hope they utilize it capabilities to the fullest because the six axis integrated in games was a joke. the wii game developers did lousy too on games like carnival games, earlier tiger woods games, etc. I really want to like this and I want to be blown away with a good shooter (like socom 4) fully utilizing this controller or some other type of action game. I mean, a first person jedi lightsaber game could potentially be AWESOME! I believe good games and good controls can coexist. By the way, the eye was placed center- below the bestbuy tv so i guess it was properly placed then. Let's place blame on the demo then.

@MAJORMOIST I had problems with some of the games on the demodisc that was bundled with Move and the Eye. For example: The Shoot game's crosshair didn't show up at all, until I had enough, removed it and downloaded it from the PlayStation Store instead. I'd claim that it's probably the demo that you were playing, but it's not an impossibility that the controller was broken either or the camera put bad. It's up to the developers how well they can take advantage of the Move anyways. The Eye has to be put in the center of the screen though, either below or above so that you appear in the middle of the screen. @dzimm It's not just marketing hype, it's also experience by multiple gamers and critics. But sure, if your Wii turns golden by talking bs about the other system's controller, then go ahead.

TevoxZi, I played the sports demo stuff at Best Buy. The table tennis was wretched there. Like I said, I'd give it another try as they might have put the camera in a bad spot or perhaps the demo was crap. I wanted to like this thing, but my initial experience turned me off. I would like to try some other games. I never got total enjoy out of the wii controller except the wii bowling. The rest of their games sucked asin using the motion to its full capability. I hope PS3 can do so as they do have awesome "gamer's games"

@dzimm Except that Wiimote isn't detected by camera, doesn't detect Z-axis, doesn't have magnetometer, object recognition (due to Eye), isn't as precise, isn't as comfortable, doesn't use BT2.0, but 1.0. You don't have to be a fanboy to have different opinions. @sleepnsurf They saw into the future I guess, PlayStation Move has been in development since 2001 - before Wii was even announced. @MAJORMOIST I haven't experienced lag, although I've only played Resident Evil 5, Tumble, The Shoot, Heavy Rain Move Edition demo and some other demoes on it. What game were you playing?

I wasn't particularly interested in Move or Kinect... Until I played them! Well actually I'm still not really interested in them really, but Kinect was really, really bad. With table tennis, we and my friend were just swinging our arms around randomly and we were hitting it perfectly Move didn't grab me but Kinect was worse than EyeToy! I must say I am suprised at how well the Move's doing (at least in Europe), I thought it looked terrible compared to Kinect, but I guess I was wrong. I'd be interested to see a comparison of sales.

The economy is still slow being one factor. People may be holding out for Christmas with this as well. Another factor is the release titles are not worth the initial purchase. One final factor is that we've seen this before: the WII. I hear the Move has better response to than the WII and it will have better visual games & gamer's games, but motion control sensing is so 2006. Sony tried with the six-axis stuff and it was crash and burn. I mean look at how many people use this today in their PS3 gaming. I see that they've worked out the kinks of the wii technology and produced" Wii version 2." This fad has exhausted itself and many people got a wake up call that a standard controller is the way to go (WE'RE couch potato gamers). Not to bas the product, but I once owned a wii so I can size the move up with the wii as I played the Move at Bestbuy and I experienced nothing but lag, lag, lag. I wanted to like it, but it was so frustrating. Perhaps they had the camera placed in a bad spot or something, but the response was so delyed. I'd be willing to give it a try again if the setup was changed around but I will not buy this until the games get better to have good intentions to utilize the motion controls, control lag/response is fixed, and prices decrease a little bit.

I'll become interested in Move when games come on it that are actually interesting. But that maybe wasn't Sony's plan in the first place, they might be going with an "easing the crowd in" strategy. However, I still think the Wii offers more in the realm of motion control and gaming in that regard, and it will probably stay that way.

I think the move is great but I believe Sony did a bad job at packaging the job from the intro. The initial move bundle that was $99 should have included both the apparati for it. It is like having a wii(which I also have) and not having the nunchuk for it. I went and bought a navigational controller anyways after the fact. Sony got over the public on this one and I hope the Kinect doesn't try to do the same.

now when you want an activity based game, you can buy a move or kinect instead of running out and buying a wii. good concept providing they have the games that people want. and right now the WII still has the best motion sensing games but that will change.

@johnjcoe9198 Yeah, i can understand the use of patents, but there's no way Nintendo could have patented EVERY application of motion sensing controls, that would be ridiculous. For example, Kinect is nothing like the Wiimote, but it still seems to have taken Microsoft years to create it. The length of the production cycle just seems to be strange to me thats all
