System Shock Remastered is currently on Kickstarter, seeking $900,000 in total funds. However, you don't have to put down money on the remake until you've tried it: a demo for System Shock Remastered is available on Steam, GOG, and Humble right now.

Developer Night Dive's Kickstarter page describes the demo as "a proof of concept" and says that the performance, features, and visuals "are subject to change."

"We want to demonstrate our commitment and passion for System Shock by providing a fun and exciting experience to potential backers," the description reads. "This demo represents the look and feel that we want to achieve with the final version we'll deliver to you, our backers. ...We hope you enjoy your time aboard Citadel Station! SHODAN eagerly awaits your arrival..."

The System Shock Remastered demo takes up less than 500 MB of space and offers about 10 minutes of gameplay that delivers a fair amount of nostalgia. It's weird to see System Shock look this good--it definitely has promise. Additionally, the demo has controller support, though you'll need a mouse to make your way through its options.

Night Dive Studios is also working on System Shock 3. The developer confirmed the news in 2015 and released short snippets of gameplay footage earlier this year. It looks similar to what you can see in System Shock Remastered's demo. Deus Ex and System Shock producer Warren Spector joined the studio to lead development on System Shock 3.

System Shock isn't the first game the studio's remade. Night Dive remastered and released the original Turok late last year, and it has plans to remake the sequel as well. Both games are on their way to Xbox One.

System Shock's original developer was Looking Glass Studios, while the sequel's development was a collaboration with Irrational Games. After System Shock 2, Irrational went on to develop the series' spiritual successor, BioShock.

System shock 2 was one of the first games that I had ever played, and dear god it was amazing. Night Dive Studios if you screw any of this up, I will find you. Use my money well.

This was one of my alltime favorite games. The sound design is still better in System Shock 2 than any modern game I've seen done since. I'm a little worried the Kickstarter won't be able to remaster how incredible it really was. They could just keep the sounds the same really as I don't see any way to improve on them.

For a pre-Alpha build, this looks more polished than most of the asset flip crap that comes out on Steam.

In the words of Jim Sterling, it looks like it was made by people who actually gave a crap.

Well, it crashed on me after about 15 minutes. Performance is pretty bad for how it looks, but we are talking about an early build here.

Beyond that though, this is straight up System Shock. Stuff is right where I remember it (or think I remember it) and the small changes they've made to the interface and the level design seem smart. A much more modern FPS UI, witch quick slots and weapon swapping on the mouse wheel go a long way to fixing up this classic for today's sensibilities.

The graphics are pretty good for a unity game, but we're not talking AAA looks here, and the textures are kind of pixelated up close ... but since that actually makes them look a little like old System Shock I don't think I mind. Still, this remaster has a got a good strong "look" to it. It's System Shock, and you can tell it's System Shock, but it also feels fresh. This is due in part to the original game being so old it was hard to tell what objects in the game were, and also because this remaster lays the lighting and smoke effects on thick. Imagine the 2009 Enterprise bridge, but with half the lights turned out and a fog machine. It's not hard to see, it's just hard to be totally sure there isn't a mutant down the hallway, and that really helps recreate the constant feeling of unease I had navigating Citadel in 1994.

I'll fire the demo back up again and keep poking, but as far as remaking a classic goes, System Shock Remastered looks real promising.

I thought Night Dive Studios just owned the rights to the franchise. The ones who are developing the third game are a team comprised of the devs behind the earlier SS games.

@gamefreak215jd: afaik the rights to system shock franchise belong to origin and activision that is why no one made a SS3 game past 20 years

wonder if NDS will release it as SS3

@gamefreak215jd: Yeah it looks like OtherSide Entertainment are working on System Shock 3, where they have some veterans like Warren Spector. Actually it's funny if you click through the link that says they confirmed it in 2015 it's also talking about OtherSide :), so yeah it's probably an error.

@gamefreak215jd: That's right! They have the rights and they have gathered the biggest masterminds behind the originals. You can find the details on their kickstarter page.
