Oblivion Remaster Surprise-Launches Today On Game Pass, Also Available On PS5

The long-rumored Elder Scrolls remaster was announced today, and it's out now.

The long-rumored remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is indeed real, and fans don't have to wait another minute to play it. Bethesda has officially announced the remaster and it's out now on Game Pass for Xbox and PC, and it's also available for purchase on those platforms, starting at $50 for the standard edition and scaling to $60 for the deluxe edition. A PS5 version is available, too.

You can buy the game on GameSpot sister site Fanatical right now for 17% off.

The game is developed by Virtuos in partnership with Bethesda, running on Unreal Engine 5 and sporting better visuals. The Remastered version includes the base game and story expansions Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. Beyond an updated look, the game features a new leveling system.

There are also new lines of dialogue, sprinting support, blood splatter effects where previously there were none, and better lighting effects, Bethesda said. You can get a closer look at the game in the announcement trailer below.

"Alongside 4K resolution, 60 frames per second performance, all-new textures, lighting effects, and landscape improvements, the game also updates everything from character, spell, and weapon animations, to dynamic time of day and weather effects," Microsoft said.

Here are some of the quality-of-life updates in Oblivion Remastered, as written by Microsoft:

  • HUD, menu and map reworks
  • Improved UI for systems like Persuasion, Clairvoyance, and more
  • Modifications to levelling, encumbrance, non-combat perks, and other mechanics
  • Improved enemy scaling
  • Enhanced accessibility features
  • Additional autosaves
  • Revised first-person and third-person camera

A digital deluxe edition ($60) is available as well. This includes, you guessed it, horse armor sets, along with special armors and weapons. Players also get a digital artbook and a soundtrack app, along with the Fighter's Stronghold expansion, Spell Tome Treasures, Vile Lair, Mehrune's Razor, The Thieves Den, Wizard’s Tower, Orrery, and Horse Pack Armor.

A remaster of Oblivion has been rumored for years, dating back to when it was first mentioned in the court documents that came out of the Microsoft vs. FTC case. The surprise-launch is not shocking, either, as that's exactly what reports said would happen with this title.

In addition to launching on PC, Oblivion was an Xbox exclusive on console when it debuted in 2006, before coming to PS3 in 2007. The open-world RPG is fondly remembered for its story and gameplay--and infamously for its horse armor, which was a prominent early example of DLC. Bethesda boss Todd Howard later reflected on the horse armor, saying "people will buy anything."

Bethesda followed up Oblivion with the enormously popular The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in 2011. Bethesda is now working on The Elder Scrolls VI, but there is no word yet on when it might be released.

@Ohaidere: I know that and that's not my point. My point Sony has nothing to offer of their own now and that box is survival is dependent on XBOX Games and other 3rd Dev's.

The PS5 is just an afterthought

Not gonna lie, other than a Morrowind remaster, this is a rare example of me actually being excited to play a remaster at all. Skyrim was such a big disappointment after oblivion for me, and this trailer got me excited to reenter that world

@xantufrog: Skyrim was dope in it's own way. I enjoy the immersed dialog in oblivion but the vast world of skyrim

Wonder if they're/they'll do a Elder scrolls 1 and 2 remake? missed the boat on those 2 games back in the day. Liked my time playing Oblivion but took my sweet time with that game, finished everything I wanted to and got no reason to go back. Hope everyone planning to play/revisit this game enjoys it!

@Destructionzz: Depends on your PC specs I suppose. But it does support all the Dualsense features on PC as well if that helps?

@Destructionzz: Similar issues. I've got a ps5 pro and a pretty good gaming laptop.

I'm leaning towards PS5 since I in general prefer that plus my portal.

I figure I'll be able to pick it up on PC cheaper down the line once the mod scene gets sorted out if I'm soxinclined.

I don’t understand why Bethesda themselves are calling this a remaster. It’s a complete rebuild of the game in a new engine, with more than just some QoL fixes. It’s a proper remake

@MigGui: Ehhh, it still feels pretty old playing it. I'd put this around the same level as the Diablo 2 remake. There are some small quality of life upgrades, but it doesn't feel like a modern version of an old game, like Resident Evil 2's or System Shock's remakes, Oblivion Remastered feels like I'm playing an old game with a new skin over it.

@mogan: that's still head and shoulders above the Mass Effect Collection, which is just a remaster on the same engine, with just a bit of improved textures and some QoL changes to ME1 for it to feel more like it belongs with ME2 and ME3...

You know what...

I used to be afraid to say this as a kid. But as an adult, I can say this with pride, honor, and zero fear. I think Oblivion sucks, A LOT. And Skyrim was what Oblivion wished it could be.

I'm sorry, but I hate being locked into classes, having to restart the story every time my spec sucks, being lost for dozens of hours because I have to talk to people for long ass time to unlock dialog options, stealth that never works, and lockpicking that takes too much effort for so little gain.

Don't get me wrong. That atmosphere of the world beats anything Bethesda has ever made in beauty and warmth, and the story, characters, and writing were the best thing with their name on it. But MAN was that gameplay and the nuance mechanics annoying to deal with.

@illegal_peanut: I dunno, Playing the remaster right now just reminds me of how much good stuff they cut for Skyrim. Like the whole persuasion system that can be used in any conversation with any NPC to make them like you more and actually has an affect on gameplay. There are things I'm not keen on. Like constantly having to repair armour and weapons, which is why I'm playing as a mage for now just so I don't have to deal with that.

@illegal_peanut: I feel the opposite- Skyrim was a massive step down by, for example, making dialog and actions largely meaningless to the world except in literally a couple of prescribed situations, and taking away classes. No need to role play, no need to worry about your choices. magic system was gutted too. As a smooth experience, yes Skyrim is best, but as an rpg it’s morrowind>oblivion>skyrim. Mind you I’m coming from a love of old school crpgs, while I realize the world is drifting towards fluid hack-n-slash gaming

@illegal_peanut: I actually thought the story and characters were pretty weak too. Oblivion was like Assassin's Creed 1; it got by on looks and novelty (though AC1 actually told a pretty cool story). It also didn't hurt that it had a huge marketing push and came out four months after the Xbox 360 launched when everybody was hungry for a big, pretty system seller game.

I've got nostalgia for Oblivion, and I'm going to play a bit of this remaster (thanks, Game Pass) and I still don't actually think it's a good game. It's like The Phantom Menace; I'll always have a soft spot for it because I saw it in theaters when I was 14 and a huge Star Wars fan ... but I know that movie sucks.

@gr4h4m833zy: Having played it now, it's definitely not a full-on remake. It's Oblivion with a new skin and some small quality of life improvements. Like the Diablo 2 remake, or Halo Anniversary. Great if you love and have nostalgia for Oblivion, but probably not going to knock the socks off a whole new generation of gamers who never played the original.

@cwilli11: If so, the only content on disc will be an unlock key to download the full game online most likely because it's Bethesda.
