Nvidia releases GTX 770 based on GTX 680 hardware

New GPU to cost $399 and is based a higher clocked version of the GK104 chip in the GTX 680.

219 Comments

GPU-maker Nvidia has unveiled the GTX 770 graphics card, which is set to retail for a recommended price of $399 (£329). The GTX 770 is based on last year's GTX 680 and makes use of the same GK104 Kepler chip. That gives it 8 SMX units and 1536 CUDA cores, but with a slightly higher clock speed of 1046 Mhz. Nvidia's GPU Boost 2.0 technology steps that up to 1085 Mhz.

No Caption Provided

The GTX 770 will be offered in 2GB and 4GB 256-bit GDDR5 memory configurations. The memory sees a substantial performance boost from the 6.0 Gbps speed of the GTX 680 to 7.0 Gbps, giving the card a total memory bandwidth of 224.3 GB/s.

The card's enclosure also sees an improvement, being based on the same cooling system as the GTX Titan and GTX 780. The thermal design power is 230W, with a requirement of 600W power supply.

Nvidia is promising performance improvements of up to 65 percent over the GTX 570, and 43 percent over the GTX 670.

The GTX 770 is the second card to be launched in the 700-series. The first, the GK110-based GTX 780, was launched last week. GameSpot's review called the GTX 780 a "brilliant graphics card that lets you crank every game to the extreme."

@stevelerario @TerminalError christ, i didnt know they did this. Wish PNY did. Do EVGA do this forever or is there a limit to how old the card is?

@ecs33 @FalconOfStorms

3 monitors is great. I love playing EVE Online on multiple screens.

I wasn't serious.

But while 3 screens is great, it's not necessarily as much to do with love of gaming as love of gadgets. If I really had to choose, I'd take 'The Last of Us' over a high-end Falcon Northwest hooked up to 10 monitors.

@quiksilver38 $130 7770 coming in the mail this week with a $20 rebate. No point in spending so much on a card.

I have been a nvidia and ati fan for quite a while as i have been building gaming computers since i was 11 (im 23 now). I am far from a fan boy, i purchase cards based on price to performance aspect and just whichever card is better for the task at hand..Ever since ATI came out with the technology of putting together hundreds of stream units together in one card i noticed an entirely new level of graphic fluidity that i have never experienced before. Nvidia shortly followed but opted for less (but more powerful stream units) and honesty, experiencing literally hundreds of different nvidia and ati graphic cars.. ATI video cards offer a much smoother more fluid experience overall, even if the average framerate is the same as an nvidia card of the same caliber, ATI just feels much smoother.. I am an OCD graphics person and if there is even one micro-hitch in the performance of my gaming, it drives me crazy.. I owned a radeon 4870HD 1gb for five years (its in my closet right now) and still to this day, it can run all of the current games just fine at normal to high settings at a minimum of at least 40fps... I than upgraded to a GTX570 and while the framerate doubled in most applications, that feel of general fluidity was gone.. No matter what game i played even if it was perfectly optimized i would notice some mechanical feeling jitters and glitches that just was non-existing with the ATI card that had 2x less the framerate.. So i than bought a GTX680 and didnt like that very much either, even at high fps some games just didnt feel smooth. Than i bought a Radeon HD 7950 (u gotta put the core to at least 1ghz, it can handle up to 1.2ghz with ease) and WOW.. I have never experienced graphic fluidity like this in my entire life.. I will buy nvidia cards in the future if they continue to improve but i have to admit that ATI with their seamless use of "stream units" i currently would reccomend ati over nvidia.. And not to mention that on one single monitor, with 1920x1080 resolution i am so glad i have 3gb of video card memory, DAYZ uses up to 2.6gb video card ram and many other games like witcher 2 have shot up above the 2gb mark as well

My GTX 570 does the job just fine. Had my rig for 18 months now and still don't need to upgrade anything yet. Just gotta wait and see how good it will handle the upcoming next gen games....

@Cryptic_Crimsyn Sell that for 200, buy a radeon 7950 boost 3gb edition for 270 (comes with crysis3, bioshock inf, and blood dragon) and your overall experiece will triple.. Thats the card i had now i have the 7950 and its literally the biggest jump in 13 years of gaming i have ever experienced

@spindie @Cryptic_Crimsyn or just wait a year? he is already far in advance of tghe next gen consoles, wait a year or 2 and stuff like the 780s will be cheap as chips. Then you can be about 10 years ahead of a console lol

@highlanderjimd @spindie @Cryptic_Crimsyn Yeah i will probably wait a couple of years to get another good Nvidia GPU like the 780 at a lower price. I've always preferred Nvidia cards over AMD. The last Graphics card i had was an 8800GT and it was an amazing card, lasted a good 5 years before i had to upgrade :)

As an Nvidia owner, I an just not sold on the 770 because of the 680 "recycling" so to speak. Just looking on Tom's Hardware, and other hardware review websites it just doesn't hold it's own water for the price. Guess I will just wait for Maxwell to come out. I just hope the PC hardware makers are not going to become watered down because of the mobile market taking over (cough cough Haswell CPU's) ! If they don't impress me with the Maxwell line of GPU's I might have to go to team red with their Southern Islands line of GPUs. Overall not worth the price for what you get for $400! This should be more like at the max $300 maybe $350 for overclocked and custom cooler options on certain cards!

@stevelerario @TerminalError Yeah of course its EVGA - I don't really trust any others apart from maybe Gigabyte and MSI...

But I'm not willing to pay the difference to get a 780...way too expensive

@TerminalError @stevelerario Well, this is kinda how the PC hardware scene has....ALWAYS been. Every 6 months, there's a new CPU/GPU/Mobo/RAM that's bigger and better. You just have to aim as high as you are willing to spend, to be outdated soon thereafter ;)

@abdoalwaer because a 680 overclocked beats yours ... so...the argument never ends.
Equally the next load of cards will be better than yours so not sure what your point is. If you got a 6xx series your sorted.... for those who have not yet bought one, might aswell go to 7xx series now.

My GTX 460 still punches with the heavyweights as long as a I strip AA out of the latest games. I suppose 16gb of RAM might be helping somewhat.....

@DarkSaber2k im running 2 460s in sli right now, taking out anti aliasing (or limiting it) and not enabling stuff like tress fx (tomb raider) helps allot. Im also running a 1680x 1050 monitor, which may be also helping us performance wise. Im not sure what anyone else is playing but I havent gotten less than 60fps in any games recently that I can think of (once i turn down anti aliasing)

@DarkSaber2k

That is odd, my gtx480 is not holding up to the latest games. Heck it doesn't hold up to games that are 18 months old. I even overclocked it, put proper thermal paste in it, and clean it out regularly. I wish i could find the GPU wizard that allows all these internet users to get more performance with less hardware. By chance, are you running liquid nitrogen as a coolant on your 460?

Yeah my 680 was just choking on Serious Sam 3 the other day. Running at a modest 1920x1200 too. Before the 680 I was running 460's in SLI and the 680 destroys them performance wise....so

DarkSaber's idea of punching with the heavyweights might not be the same as yours.

@DarkSaber2k Not it doesn't, the more ram allows you for more multitasking in cooperation with the CPU.As long as you have as much as the game requires, it makes no difference, the game only uses what it requires.

I have 16GB like you. No difference.

@TohouAsura @DarkSaber2k the 32bit exe the game runs on will never use more than 3gig........ As long as you have enough ram (and fast ram too) you may as well spend the mony on a better gpu, unless you do graphic editting 16GB is overkill. Or if you just chucked more ram in for shits and giggles since its so cheap these days :)

@DarkSaber2k Nope not helping at all, the amount of RAM has no effect on game speed unless you have less then requered, but if you have more it wont speed it up.

I had GTX580 which is twice faster then yours and well it sucked major balls in new games, my breaking point was Tomb Raider.

Got 7990Ghz edition, because next gen games will be ATI optimized since both consoles have ATI GPUs (actually all 3, but who counts wiicrap eh?)

This really pisses me off because I just bought a GTX680 around a month ago

This is what I hate about technology these days (especially phones) - Things just don't feel SPECIAL anymore because you know in the back of your head that your new item will be replaced in a couple of months...

Sigh...the older days...

You may have bought your 680 a month ago, but the thing's been out for over a year so you could've guessed a refresh was in the works....info on the 700 series has been roiling for quite some time. First we thought it might be Maxwell, then when Titan hit it was pretty clear it would be a Kepler refresh.

And the 680 is still a great card and plenty damn special. There's no compelling upgrade for it until Maxwell arrives.

Ouch. That is always harsh. In all fairness though, you should have known. Nvidia's gk110 chip was no secret. Almost every review i read about the Titan mentioned other cards coming very soon too.

This time last week I had no plan on upgrading from my GTX 580. However my girlfriend has some expenses to claim so Its looking like I will be upgrading now.

I'm thinking EVGA GTX 780 Super Clocked (currently sold out a lot of places In the UK). I'll be needing a new higher resolution monitor then, Dell Ultrasharp. You can also pick up the Samsung 830 SSD 500gb for less than 250 notes now as well so I'll have that too.

@YearoftheSnake5 Ha! I have a GTX 275 too! I was going to go for the 780 but I think I'll go with the 770. But I'll wait for the new consoles to arrive first then see the benchmarks on the newest games before I decide. In the meantime I'll upgrade my processor & RAM and finish my backlog.
