No new Darksiders in 2013

Nordic Games confirms series won't return this year; "I don't believe in bringing out a sh**** sequel," says new owner.

The Darksiders series will remain dormant for the duration of 2013, new owner Nordic Games has confirmed. Speaking with Game Informer, CEO Lars Wingefors said the company plans to speak with partners to discuss the future of the Darksiders brand in the coming week.

No Caption Provided

"Officially, we haven't talked to any partners. My colleagues in Austria are handling the business development and are handling all those contacts. We'll be sitting down, I think, in the next week to discuss all those options," Wingefors said. "It takes a very long time to make games. You won't see a new Darksiders this year. I don't believe in bringing out a s***** sequel."

Crytek USA, which is staffed by a number of former Vigil Games developers, has expressed interest in working on future games in the series.

Wingefors also detailed Nordic Games' position as it relates to the future of the brands it acquired for $4.9 million yesterday, which include Darksiders, Red Faction, and MX vs. ATV. He said Nordic Games will not develop any future installments internally, but will instead seek out external partnerships to extend the franchises.

"I'm impressed with the love and interest that those IPs, especially Darksiders, are bringing it. You can see Nordic Game as a middleman in order to create great new sequels," Wingefors said. "If we can find the right team with the right terms, I'm sure we can find the right financial solution to make it happen."

Since the auction results were published yesterday, Wingefors said Nordic Games had received calls from interested parties and some discussions were held, though he declined to give any greater detail.

"We have to be very honest. I am a business man within the games industry. We are not the creative, talented developer that brings out new versions in house," Wingefors stated. "I understand the potential of the IPs. I respect the original creators and the creative people who are able to create sequels. In the past 24 hours, we have been contacted and there have been a few discussions (but I can't confirm names)."

Last summer's Darksiders II is the most recent entry in the series. It launched in August for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, later coming to Wii U as a launch title. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

if they would allow external help like from the ex-vigil games employees at crytek they could flourish this franchise with new life and enthousiastic gamers who would buy the sequel. with their knowledge of the franchise and the great graphics crytek can produce you can have a great game. I sencerely hope that they would.

That's actually not a bad thing. The new owner kind if doesn't have a lot to go on other than the fact Death brought back man. What can or could he possibly do?

The DS series are great, to me. I hope they keep them running and don't change up too much within them. There are two more Horsemen left. I hope we get to see them at some point.

Darksiders series were great. they had story blended right into the gameplay, although graphics was poor. hope some developer maintains the same story and brings out a game with great graphics.

Well at least they have the right mindset, but I still wish it had gone to Crytek, seeing how most of the series original developers are now there.

AC 3 was the first thing that came to my mind as I read this. The developers of the AC series should read this sentence. LOL.

Actually I am happy for that decision, to make a good game you need time, not a game every year for example Assassin's creed 3 was the worst game I played last year, none of the elements inside that game was compatible with each other. I played Darksiders 1 and even though 1 looks like a mixture of games but it did had wonderful story, darksiders 2 was great with a good story and nice fun combat...... so hope to give the sequel some time to make it good.

i did not even bother touching the second one because i do not like to feel like deja vu when paying full retail price. played the first one and thought is was a horrible zelda-clone. it is totally beyond me why people are buying sequels when they are obviously just the same game all over again.

@Episode23 Darksiders and Darksiders 2 are vastly different games, only the combat and a few features here and there are similiar.

I like how everyone is basically (and seemingly purposely) ignoring the fact that Platinum Games wants to work on Darksiders, but only Crytek USA is getting mentioned.

@tightwad34 @Kickable eh I don't blame Gamespot I'll read even the most trivial news. i'm just used to being uneasy about Assassin's Creed or COD quality, now I'm paranoid that we're in for a yearly wave of shit when companies are reassuring us they'll be doing things differently. I'm just overreacting :P

Any game any game developer wants to bring up over a long period must do it in a way that leaves time for the player to enjoy the game fully and to digest the game, 2-3 years is the best period to put between games, it allows players to enjoy the game and developers to better come up with the next chapter in the series, this extends to all of game development not just one franchise....

@Thanatos2k Frankly, I found D2 much more tedious than D1. The pace also deteriorated pretty quickly near the end and the ending was anticlimactic.

I enjoyed D1 more and War is just much more badass than Death IMO.

@Salehjamal @Thanatos2k I agree with you on the odd pacing and anti-climactic ending

Though I do think that DS2 was the better game overall. The combat was much more fun, the world felt much more alive and the level design was pretty good too. I also loved the rpg elements they put in the game (though it felt tacked on and it would've been great if they properly integrated it into the game). Even though it had many flaws, the gameplay in DS2 was just better than the gameplay in DS1.

And for this reason I think that I prefer Death to War (while I do agree War is more badass), I just felt more of a connection to Death in DS2 than I did with War in DS1.

@Salehjamal @Thanatos2k Yeah, really liked the first one second one didn't do it for me, too unfocused and large stretches of nothing. The dungeons were very samey too and I kept on forgetting where I was as they all seemed the same especially at the beginning. Too me the first one was a lot tighter and focused and drew me along. Yeah and Death as a character just didn't do it for me would have been better if he was last and more horrifying, should have chosen Famine or Pestilence (or whatever Vigil called their versions)

Hope the next one is more like the first but glad someone has picked up the license and looks to be taking it seriously.

@Thanatos2k Although, it may have seemed like a logical joke at the time the fact the second game is actually better then the first undermines its very esscence.

@rasputin177 @Thanatos2k The RPG equipment system was complete garbage. Darksiders 1 was like a happy mixture of God of War and Zelda. Darksiders 2 took the receipe, threw crap into the pot, and stirred.

I like the mythology driven story of the first game. In the second they basically started pulling dwarves and what-have-you out their ass, and while I think that could have been done cooly...it really wasn't. They didn't even TRY to tie it in to the close-knit narrative of the first game, and it's deep mythology. The best they did was a handwave going 'This is related to that. Trust me. We're not gonna show ya, but we said so, so accept it.'

Tighten up the story a bit more, and Darksiders could be better than ever.

@greatryoman i agree if the story get weaker because the game become open world . but i always support the developer who try something new instead using the same formula .

@acelogan1989 @greatryoman I don't. Using the same formula for sequels is a good thing. It is the content that is supposed to change. People are looking for a similar game in a sequel... everything they loved about the previous game(s) but with new worlds to explore and things to do.

I liked Darksiders 1 more than the 2nd. They were both good, but I like the first one becuase it felt like a mature Zelda clone type game. Something we need more of. The 2nd game was too far a departure to feel like a zelda clone.

Good move.

Take several years for my part to flesh out a game with better gameplay and better story.
