Nintendo Switch With OLED And 4K Output Reportedly Being Revealed This Year

Reports have suggested Samsung will be manufacturing OLED panels for a Switch Pro.

An upgraded Nintendo Switch model featuring an OLED display from Samsung, as well as support for 4K resolution when docked, is reportedly set for a reveal by Nintendo later this year. The model, according to Bloomberg, will be unveiled this year and Samsung will begin mass production of the new seven-inch screen "as early as June." In handheld mode, it will be sticking to a more modest resolution. (We have some requests for a Switch Pro, if it is indeed real.) [Update: Nintendo has officially confirmed a Switch OLED model releasing in October.]

The OLED display panel will output at 720p resolution, according to Bloomberg, which cites people familiar with plans. Nintendo is said to be working to maintain interest around the Switch, as well as continue to sell software competitively against Xbox and PlayStation.

Now Playing: Nintendo Switch Lite - The Pros And Cons

Reports of a more powerful version of the Switch have been floating around for some time now. In January a dataminer noted that a firmware update issued by Nintendo references an upgraded Switch console codenamed Aula. This upgraded model allegedly uses the Mariko (Tegra X1+) SoC chip that was implemented with the Switch Lite and updated 2019 regular model Switches. Additionally, the firmware mentioned support for a Realtek chip, which has been advertised as a "4K UHD multimedia SoC."

The same dataminer noted that it's likely the new Switch's display will not be a higher resolution when in handheld mode, and that the 4K chip may be located in the dock instead of the tablet itself. Bloomberg's reports indicate this could be the case too.

The Switch is now in its fifth year and been a huge success for Nintendo. Sales of the handheld/home console hybrid are nearing 80 million. Its predecessor, the Wii U, only managed a little over 13.5 million in its lifespan.

4k on a Nintendo system will be possible in 2035. Keep on dreaming if you think its possible to achieve native 4k any time sooner.

@hardwenzen: Since the Switch uses Nvidia graphics hardware, feels like the obvious thing would be to give it the needed components for DLSS (tensor cores etc). That way a game can run at a lower internal res like 1080 or 1440 but look very close to native 4k.

This could also solve the battery life/heat concerns and make it so there's no excuse for not upgrading to a 1080p display on the tablet; a game could be scaled up to that while going easy on the hardware and running at just 540p internally

@Spartan_418: The mediatek Soc is for 4k video only, and something for N to market as "4k." Judging by the absolutely insane amounts of people that dont realize this, didnt read the article, dont understand that handhelds and 4k are WAY off... Nintendo's misleading marketing WORKS.

@Spartan_418: It's not using graphics hardware like you think though. It's using the Tegra chip which is made for mobile gaming. Things like Tablets and cellphones used for those types of games. It's nowhere nearly as powerful enough to have those types of tensor cores.
Even with DLSS that chip is just not strong enough to even push 1440p.

There is a good chance that they use DLSS2.0, but that's how they might get to 1080p/60fps. There's no way they'll achieve any higher native resolution.

@hardwenzen: A few games on the existing Switch already run at native 1080p in docked mode. With beefier hardware and DLSS added, why couldn't the resolution be pushed higher than that?

Yes, but the amount of games running 1080p can be counted on your two hands. Them having access to DLSS will allow them to get to 60fps instead of 10-30fps that we're currently getting from every game that isn't a Nintendo made title.

What do you its doable? With what kind of specs is it doable? Then at what price? Its not doable at all, and won't be doable (for a reasonably price) for ages. The best they can do is release a 1080p system that upscales to 4k when docked, and that's not native 4k and real far from it. Plus, this is Nintendo we're talking about. They have trouble with 720p in 2021.

@hardwenzen: Who cares if it's using tech in the dock for upscaling? The games already look great in most cases and upscaling to 4k will still be better than the 1080p even if it's not native. I doubt the price will be something crazy and, anyway, nobody's holding a gun to your d-ck forcing you to buy it, champ. Totally bizarre that you take such offense over this.

Do you know how ugly the visuals are gonna be if those mobile textures are on a sharp screen? This is literally gonna look like a meme. Its like set a pc game to its minimum settings and good luck. Eww.

Not too sure what you're yawning at. Did we forget that this is Nintendo, a company that is a generetion plus behind competition when it comes to specs? And online infrastructure wise, they're more than two generations behind.

Expecting 4k is unreasonable. Be happy if they get to 1080p/60fps. That would be an achievement on its own.

I really wished Nintendo would push the power a little more.

Instead, the switch is just turning into the DS. Pretty soon they'll have 3D Switch.

The only positive on this is that I won't have to buy a new console to keep playing Mario games.

OLED on handheld would be a great addition!
I've been amazed by the screen quality of my old Moto Z play which is an OLED display to a point where I wouldn't want any LCD screen on my upcoming cell phones.

Getting the OLED switch would be a no-brainer for anyone shopping for a new Switch console but not enough of a change so it's worth replacing current products! (I have a Day-One Switch and a Switch lite and I'm pretty fine with that...)

I wonder about the 4K though as the curent switch model are SOOOOOO far from being great even at 1080p... Take a game like the new Zelda "Warriors" game... it can barely run at 20FPS at 1080p.

Besides, I'm not quite sure the Switch actually needs better resolution.

I have a very neat Samsung Q80T Qled 4K and I'm surprised how nice switch games look even at 1080p on it! Playing Mario Kart 8 with such brilliant and radiant colors is already very nice to me!

Nintendo games most of the times aren't games where you get finicky on details anyway...

Doesn't really sound worth it as an upgrade. At least to me. Was really hoping there would be a true overhauled version of the Switch, but it looks like this doesn't seem to be it. Something for new potential Switch owners maybe?

Though I did just get the Switch to play Nintendo games and not for super high graphics games (I have my PC for that). But it would be nice to see some games take advantage of better hardware. Plus I'd feel more comfortable having my current Switch use Retroarch and use any new "Pro" version of the Switch as my main console.

Oh well. Given this I doubt will even see another model of the Switch. Probably will still be supported like the 3DS, but they may just move on to a new console by the time a new Switch version would be expected.

@Smosh150: I think it's probably a worthwhile value for people like myself, who hadn't bought one yet and have come around to really wanting to finally get one, but yeah, maybe not something you'd bother upgrading to if you have the original version.

@esqueejy: Yea, and that is fair for sure. The Switch was a kneejerk purchase last autumn for me and I pretty much fell in love with it instantly. Though I still think they could have done more with this new model. I mean old and new owners wouldn't mind a console that is worth upgrading to (If the value is enough) or purchasing as their first. I'll get any new upgrade that performs a lot better than the current non-lite model.

Not that I'm complaining at all. I'm not bothered in the slightest about the performance of the Switch. But who doesn't want better? What I am bothered by is a certain developer of Pokemon not even taking advantage of the current performance of the Switch which is rather pitiful (Still holding out hope that will change).

The question isn't whether it's just an OLED display and 4K output. The question is whether there is a real upgrade to the chipset in the Switch, and even then, this sounds like a mid-gen upgrade as opposed to a new console.

I'd rather see a full replacement, next generation Nintendo console instead of "Pro" model.

I do like the portability of the switch but I just brought one and I will just forgo getting the newer one and the games other than their own franchises are games many have already played and I understand there is people who have yet to play them but again for me no deal.

Honestly I think switch games look just fine in 1080p. The games aren't exactly graphical marvels already (doesn't mean they look bad though), so upscaling to 4K I don't think it'll make much of a difference. Most of their first party games really just have cartoony style graphics anyways, and in 1080p they already look clear and crisp. Anything that's multiplatform, that's what I have the PS5 for. They should just let the switch ride out the last years of it's life and put all their resources into the next Nintendo console.

As stated back in January when the dataminer leaked this information, it seems like this is actually an upgrade to the Switch's docking station rather than the Switch itself since the actual handheld unit is still using the Tegra X1 SOC, ergo this will most likely be marketed more as a peripheral upgrade rather than a full blown hardware update. Obviously they'll be offering new Switches which come bundled with the new dock and fitted with a new and improved OLED display, but all forthcoming Switch games will still run on Gen 1 and Gen 2 Switch handhelds and docks, albeit at a lower resolution when docked.

If it's still only max 720p in handheld but 4K docked won't that be a nightmare from a development perspective? Trying to get stuff to always work / look good on both.

Feels like we could end up in a situation where games stick with crappier graphics to be handheld compatible and never bother utilising 4K, or are "docked only" to make use of the power. Feels a bit like the issues we have with cross-gen games

@doctorvanbosh: No, PC games are programmed to run at a wide variety of resolutions, and many console games (barring console exclusives) are actually made first on PC, then merely tweaked to run at a fixed resolution.

Heck, consoles have actually been doing this for awhile, like how PS4 games are coded to run in either 1080p on a standard PS4 and 2160p on PS4 Pro/PS5. And Switch games are already coded to output in either 720p or 1080p depending on whether the system is in Handheld Mode or Docked.

Yeah, right. I assume it's just as 4K capable as the new consoles can handle 8K. But at least now Switch users will be able to play their games in proper 1080p. And might even get all the latest console games ported to their device, running at 1080p.

But the inbuilt display will still only have 720p resolution. What a joke when every phone has had at least a 1080p display for probably more than a decade now.

4K Switch? Really doubt that even if this is true, that this will be a 4K capable upgraded console capable of doing a proper 4K 60fps. Knowing Nintendo and their stone age mentality, most likely it will be a 4K 30FPS when in duked mode and likely they will be sticking with 720P in handheld mode. Also I'm not a fan of they sticking with a 720P screen, if they not upgrading to a 1080P screen, i rather see the handheld be upgraded to at least a 900P screen.

This is all too difficult to believe with Nintendo jumping to 4K? Specially since they will be jumping over 2K and other resolution's before 4K and going straight to 4K. Stone age mentality Nintendo jumping all the way to 4K? I don't believe it until i see it with prove and evidence.

The way they been adapting with console generations, it would have likely taken them anther 10 to 15 years for them to get to 4k and by then probably Sony and Microsoft would have likely be in 20K resolutions.

@doomsdayhell01: On a screen as small as the Switch, higher resolutions aren't as appreciable and it would drive up the cost per unit by a substantial degree. It makes more sense to keep it at 720p and keep unit costs low while updating the dock to output in higher resolutions. Besides, the Switch has never been marketed as a technical powerhouse, and generally those who are into maximum performance get into PC gaming, so Nintendo is basically just playing it smart. Up until the Wii, Nintendo kept the specs of their hardware competitive, but it really wasn't working out for them because Sony was consistently outselling them despite having substantially weaker hardware, so Nintendo decided that graphics weren't everything and decided to focus more on developing hardware and games which provided unique gameplay experiences, to varying degrees of success. This strategy has ultimately proven to be highly successful, so it makes no sense for them to return to that business model, especially when they cannot possibly make the Switch as powerful as a XBSX or PS5, let alone a Gaming PC, and it would cost them loss of sales since a more powerful, more expensive Switch would only be compared to other systems which it couldn't complete with in terms of raw performance, yet would have to be priced similarly to.

Gave my 2017 model switch to my step son anticipating such a release. Hopefully, it is actually more powerful and not just "4k capable". Knowing Nintendo and how cheap they are, probably not though.

@cjr84:I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally hope it has more power, specifically a Pascal or Turing based Tegra X1+. Then I could at least run Breath of the Wild at a solid 60 FPS instead of the locked 30 FPS it uses currently. Assuming Nintendo updates games with performance patches that is.

@squishytia: If it can't do 60 fps in Zelda, it's fucking useless as far as I'm concerned. Framerate trumps resolution EVERY time, and I could care less about the 4k, and I have a 65 inch LG C8 OLED tv, a PS5, and a Series X. I had the OG Switch, and I can't go back to 30 fps.

P.S. - Nice to see someone who knows their PC components. I had a GTX 1080ti until last summer when I sold it anticipating new GPUs. Turns out that was a mistake. Might never get back to PC gaming now, and not because of shortages in stock, but because it doesn't make sense to buy say a 3070 for 499, when a whole next gen console costs the same and has similar computing performance with less maintenance. Xbox gamepass has made PC game savings obsolete.

@cjr84: Well the way things are going with GPU's, those 3070's are no longer 499, the inflated price is even higher now and those are going anywhere from 600 to 800 bucks for the 3070. I have been waiting around for a 3080 and i haven't seen it lower than 1,500. Scalpers are killing us all.

Now with the Switch i doubt that even if is 4K capable upgraded console that it will be able to do a 4K 60fps. Knowing Nintendo and their stone age mentality, most likely it will be a 4K 30FPS.
