Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Connections Issues Found In Pre-Release Hardware

Joy-Connection problems.

It seems the delightfully odd Joy-Con controllers for the Nintendo Switch are experiencing some connection problems in pre-release hardware.

Reports are surfacing from numerous outlets with Switch hardware, claiming that connection issues have been found in the left-hand Joy-Con while playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

No Caption Provided

Polygon collected a handful of tweets from fellow games journalists experiencing the problem, citing hopes that the incoming day one system update will include a fix, but nothing has been mentioned in previous correspondence from Nintendo on the subject.

Further testing has revealed that the connection issues aren't only being exhibited in Breath of the Wild, but also in system menus, and not only from the left-hand Joy-Con. Watch the video below to see a torso from GameXplain run through some tests.

As should be obvious, these tests are not exhaustive, and the root cause of the problem is still unclear. A Nintendo rep told Polygon the company was looking into the issue. We have reached out to our contacts for more information.

Check out our Switch battery tests, full unboxing of the new system, and roundup of confirmed launch and post-launch titles.

maybe the joy-con are defective or those ship to the store via those big truck, keeps throwing them in. electronic now and days should be label "fragile".

update: apparently nintendo didn't mirror the left one with the right one on the bluetooth thing. one owner had to add it to himself aka fixed left joy-con.

No concern here... wasn't planning on using the joy cons anyways, except for when in portable mode, then its a non-issue.

@d_: I wasn't planning to use the tablet controller for the Wii U either, except for all the games that forced you to do so.

Expect the same here.

@Thanatos2k: Yeah, maybe if you plan to play 1-2-3 Switch or some other lame game where it might make more sense if ur trying to milk a cow or something..

Pretty sure using the joy cons will be optional in most cases though, WiiU was really trying to push that second screen from the controller on ppl but I can’t imagine why they would be forcing the joy cons on you unless again, ur playing some silly ass game that calls for hand gestures & looking like a fool

Considering the amount of effort that a lot of people put into securing one of those, they better have a that tied down by next weekend.

Will Nintendo's customer service be open the whole weekend? When the U launched, Nintendo wasn't available for help. The update for the U took HOURS to complete. When MS launched the 360's Kinect, they were open well after normal business hours. Nintendo better hope this is an easy fix.

I wonder if they can boost the wireless strength (shortening battery life) via firmware update. Seems like that would be the primary way to tackle this short of a hardware revision

I've had the same problem with my launch-era Xbone, and even the latest firmware on an Elite controller hasn't completely squashed it. About 1 disconnect per night still.

Don't even get me started on wireless mice over the last 20 years... Yeah, blue helped vs red, but nothing beats copper -- particularly when you're gaming on the road w/a laptop.

So... Cables rule, I guess?

@Pyrosa: using G900 since launch and not a single issue. In fact, it works much better than my wired R.A.T.

X1 controllers are indeed prone to erratic behaviour, though. Haven't used X1 in ages but playing with X1S controller on PC and it drops connection from time to time both through bluetooth and wireless receiver. Not a big deal but annoying. The problem starts when I try to charge it while playing - it looses connection with 90% of cables I have including the one from the official Play&Charge kit (the only cable that does work is the one that came with PS4 ^__^) and I have to sync anew after charging.

@Pyrosa: That problem lies with the xbox not the controller. I had the same issue and it happened on every controller. When i switched out the xbox one, the problem stopped.

So the video talks about messing with the connection by putting something or your hand in front of the JoyCon to disrupt the BT signal to the Switch. That is not that big of a deal unless it's such a delicate connection that someone walking in between you and the Switch during a boss battle gets you killed. The Tweet talks about desynchronization, so if I am reading that correctly that has nothing to do with a disrupted signal. That is something entirely different in the firmware or non-disrupted connection itself. This is bad, and how was this not found immediately in testing and patched before units went out to the media?!!! I hope for the sake of all day 1 adopters that Nintendo can fix this with the Day 1 patch.

@CrusaderForever: Well it has to have happened during normal use for anyone to notice. They're just covering it with their hands or behind their back to demonstrate the issue in a controlled setting. Think about the Joycon Grip, that's probably what gives it the most problems.

Surely some basic alpha/beta testing caught this issue and a day one update is on the way to fix it?

That sucks hopefully they sort that out quick. I can see how they could miss something like this. They have been demoing the switch in environments with lots of interference and then blamed the desync on that when really part of that could have been this issue.

How did they **** this up? Wiimotes (2005-2006 tech) have an absurd range, like, I'd go downstairs to put new batteries in, accidentally hit a button and it'd reconnect to my system immediately through ceiling, floor and walls, and yet, the damn Joy-Cons disconnect when you put your fingers in the wrong place?!

Good thing I didn't preorder. Hope this gets patched.

@Red_hot_smasher: probably lowered the signal to conserve the battery.

Bluetooth and WiFi drains the battery.

Look at the things the Joy-Con devices can do that is going to eat the battery very fast.

Bluetooth has a lower bandwidth compared to WiFi as well.

Looks to me like it's a issue with the bluetooth, or whatever the Joy-Cons use, just not being particularly brilliant unless the controllers are basically as uncovered as possible. It's not great for when you're playing with them detached from the system but it shouldn't be a problem in any other configuration, I presume.

@uubershikamarux: Preorders in this era are a gamble -- not surprising at all.

@computernoises: My Wii U that I bought 4 months after launch is unable to read 90% of Wii games. I sent it for repair because of this issue and Nintendo sent it back saying "Nothing is wrong with your Wii U." It's the first time I had to deal with a faulty Nintendo system, but it burned me pretty bad.

@uubershikamarux: It's nothing, if the joycon were disconnected it's because people put something in front of it, it lost its connection because of that, which is pretty normal... Nothing to be scared about.

Everyone is talking about how crap Switch is and how joy-cons have problems or not. I'm here sitting and looking at those trigger buttons how close to each other and how tiny the whole thing looks.

@computernoises: How is it a PROBLEM? Are you effing kidding me? I'll be doing most of my gaming at home on a giant TV, sitting back and relaxing, and if the controls don't work 100% of the time (like my Dualshock 4 does) then that's a pretty big damn problem. I'm close to cancelling tbh.

@asmoddeuss: Yes, that's how they recreate it, but it's been happening to multiple reviewers during normal operation. You think they're putting both hands over the joycon by mistake? Even a desync of once or twice a day is pretty bad, especially if it happens during a tense moment.

@Grim_Jackal: No idea what they do, but in docked mode, let's say they take one joycon in each hand, and they sit in the couch and put one arm behind the couch headboard (Back pillow?, don't know how to call it exactly) , that could make the issue. (see picture 1 below), or put a hand behind your leg when sitting in the couch, that also technically can recreate the issue I guess. (see picture 2 below).
