Nintendo Switch Adds Acclaimed Metroidvania-Style Game This Summer

Axiom Verge: Multiverse Edition is coming to Nintendo's new console, with plans for a Standard Edition as well [UPDATE]

Update: A spokesperson for BadLand Games confirmed to GameSpot that the publisher also has plans to release a Standard Edition of Axiom Verge for Switch and PS4. Unlike the Multiverse Edition detailed in our original post, the Standard release will only include a copy of the game and "will bring the price down significantly." More details will be announced at a later time. Additionally, a digital version of the game will be released on the Switch eShop for $20.

Original story: The acclaimed Metroidvania title Axiom Verge is coming to Nintendo Switch, publisher BadLand Games announced today. The game is scheduled to launch this August.

Now Playing: Axiom Verge Official Trailer

Originally released in 2015 for PS4 (and subsequently ported to PC, PS Vita, Xbox One, and Wii U), Axiom Verge is a side-scrolling action-adventure game in the vein of the original Metroid. Players explore a labyrinthine alien world, using the power-ups you gradually acquire to battle bosses and delve deeper into the planet.

No Caption Provided

The game was previously only available as a digital title, but the upcoming Switch release will be the physical Multiverse Edition, which is also coming to PS4, Vita, and Wii U. Along with a copy of the game, the Multiverse Edition includes a booklet with art and commentary, a double-sided poster of the game's world map and items, and a documentary about the game's creation by 2 Player Productions.

Axiom Verge: Multiverse Edition retails for €30/$30, though as was the case with Rime, the Switch version will be slightly more expensive at €40/$40. To offset the price difference, the Switch release also includes a soundtrack CD, which is available as a preorder incentive for the other versions. We called Axiom Verge "an excellent example of inspired game design" in our review and awarded it 8/10.

At least they could have made this 3d and more graphically appealing.

Oh great, yet another side scrolling indie for a Nintendo platform. That's only #3,469,871, right?

@Person4: Nope, that's not right. This one is actually very good and it even does some things Metroid didn't do like have an interesting story.

@Person4: Why the double standard? You do know that PS4 has WAY more than the Switch right?

When "Axiom Verge: Multiverse Edition coming to Switch" isn't clickbait enough for a lolSpot headline.

The more games, the better. Hopefully Diablo 3 and Red Dead Redemption ports are on the way.

I need to restart this in earnest. Super Metroid was my all time favorite, so you know I had to get it.

@sellingthings: As someone who had Axiom Verge on Steam for some time now, I assure you it's a good game and worthy of buying.

Unfortunately, the same phrase means I already have a copy, so I don't need a Switch version.

@sellingthings: Believe it or not, familiarity is more desireable than new and different. And I don't think most people are capable of doing anything truly original anyway.

This is absolutely on my list of best Metroidvania games of all time, along with Shadow Complex and Guacamelee.

The vibe is totally Super Metroid, from the beginning to the end.

XoX Elsenova!!! (seriously DON'T go look that up... just experience it for yourself)

Now I might buy this. I just have such a big back log that I'm not sure when I'll get to this.

@fig56: It's a game you can completely clear in a weekend so it's worth getting sooner than later.

@fig56: It's so good that once I decided to "just give it a couple hours one night," I ended up ONLY playing it until I had 100% of every possible completion.

Never got to play it, but came close to getting it a few years back.

I honestly don't think I have the time or money for Axiom Verge right now, but maybe later on.

That is pretty damn awsome (even though it's been out for a while) I'm just excited to see how open Nintendo is becoming.

Still need to finish this one, I thought it was pretty well done. A good example of what talented indie devs can do.

@Richardthe3rd: Yeah, same here. Was well done, but I got a bit lost later on in the game, and never got back to it. Arguably one of the retro style titles this gen, right up there with Ori and the Blind forest IMO.
