Nintendo Switch 2 Already With Developers, Launching In 2024 - Report

The next Nintendo console has been sent to developers ahead of a public release in 2024, it's reported.

It looks like the next Nintendo console could be released in 2024. According to VGC's sources, development kits for Nintendo's next-gen console are now in the hands of "key partner studios."

Platform-holders like Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony are understood to provide development kits to certain studios ahead of launch so they can start making games and testing the hardware. The VGC report did not say which studios might have their hands on the new system right now.

As for a release date, multiple sources told the site that Nintendo is targeting a release for the rumored new console in the second half of 2024. Pricing was not mentioned in the report, but for comparison, the Switch launched at $300.

But what is the rumored new console? Nintendo has made no official announcements, but the VGC report said the supposed new system will work in a "portable mode," similar to the Switch. The console may use an LCD screen, not an OLED, in an effort to manage costs, the report said. The system will supposedly support physical games through a cartridge slot and digital games. Previously, it was reported that Nintendo will keep the same account system on its next console for ease of use.

Nintendo has not officially commented on this new report, and GameSpot has followed up with the company an an attempt to get more information.

Before this, a research firm predicted that Nintendo would release its next major system in 2024. In May, it was reported that development on the next Nintendo console was "progressing well."

There have been rumors of a more powerful Switch percolating for a long time now, but Nintendo has never confirmed this. Nintendo has, however, confirmed that it will launch a new console before the year 2100.

Nintendo launched a new Switch Lite model in 2019 and an OLED model in October 2021, but fans never got the rumored Switch "pro" model.

The Nintendo Switch is now in its seventh year, and the system continues to put up big-time sales numbers (though sales are declining in recent times). That being said, people always want to know what's next. Nintendo marketing executive Doug Bowser (real name) told the AP that he has "nothing to announce" about the next Nintendo hardware, but overall the company feels "very bullish" about the current model.

"We're entering uncharted territory with the platform. It's exciting to see that demand is still there," Bowser said.

The Switch has proven to be popular so long into its lifecycle in part because it is a genuinely "unique device" with its ability to be used at home and on the go, Bowser said.

Nintendo will inevitably release another console one day. While we don't know what it'll be just yet, Bowser said the aim for it will be to "surprise and delight" customers. "How can we introduce new unique ways of playing? That's always in front of our mind," Bowser said.

The Switch has sold more than 125 million units. It is now the third best-selling console of all time.

Wathever it is, it better has BC (not buying an outdated Switch just for Metroid and Fire Emblem) and optionaly stationary again (mobile is given).
Also, the amount of jrpgs on the Switch makes me look forward in the meanwhile...at least i am curious.
I hope Nintendo gets it right this time (for me personally)...decend hardware at a good price and lots of jrpgs from 3rd party coz most Nintendo franchises i dont like.
Like back then with the SNES...i had only Super Metroid,F-Zero and Earthbound from Nintendo, every other game was from SquareSoft, Enix, Capcom(Breath of Fire,Lufia), Tecmo,Hudson Soft and Konami.

Very funny guys, very funny 😏.

The whole downgrading from OLED to LCD doesnt make sense. I'm sure if they have a substantial upgrade in power (Graphics, speed, resolution). They will still be able to bring out a console between the 300-400 dollar mark, using OLED. AND people will still buy it, especially if they are going the Switch sequel route. I for one would like a home console only, with the ability to cloud the games via the nintendo account through our smart devices.

I hate rumor mill BS. None of it is accurate and its always the worst-case bad scenarios that get me pissed off. Worst part they been bombarding us with fake next system rumors because everyone knows the switch is old and its hardware has really aged badly.

Nintendo has never really released a "straight sequel" console before.. even with the relatively straightforward jump from NES to SNES, the controllers were way different. It wasn't a copy-paste with more power. And even if we treat it as that, at least it was cutting edge for the time. The equivalent would be for them to start releasing some gorgeous 4K 60 FPS games that push their genres forward, with little to no load times. But no amount of wizardry would allow a handheld to deliver that kind of performance while docked.

I mean, there has to be some sort of new hook with the Switch 2, right? If they're going back to the LCD screen of the launch Switch, that's a straight downgrade in one aspect. There has to be some sort of expensive new tech they're cramming in there to make it worthwhile... ...right?

Seriously, I hope they aren't planning to stall for another 6 years.

That would be funny if Nintendo just came out and said, "Here is the Switch 2, with a bigger battery, and no other changes," and people who just LOVE Nintendo will be willing to shell out another $400 for like their 5th Switch console.

Cool. Clearly they don't need to when it comes to development power, considering how extraordinary Tears of the Kingdom has been, but it's always interesting to see Nintendo make something new.

@HAWK9600:

Tears of the Kingdom clearly was exposing Nintendo's aging console. It clearly looks like the game needed that extra muscle to help the game out. They need more than a minor upgrade, that will only give you better Fps and slightly better graphics output.

I want a 4K console, i don't want a more powerful 1080P console. TOTK, was only running at 900P in docked mode and 720P in handheld mode. Switch can't even play demanding games at 1080p, most demanding games like TOTK and Bayonetta 3, are all running at resolutions no higher than 900p.

It'll be funny if their next console is actually a console that can actually play all games at 1080p, something that the Switch miserably failed to do with most demanding games.

I would like to buy my first Nintendo console since the GameCube but it has to be a next gen console and not an updated 1080P machine. They can keep that one.

@Abdulrahman1981: I don't even need that level of horsepower. TotK, Odyssey, etc. look good enough that I'm rarely taken out of the moment. The bigger issue is loading times.

Even if the only thing a Switch Pro/2 did was swap out the bargain basement SD card slot they used for one with decent read speeds, I'd pick that up in a heartbeat. I feel like I spend more time looking at loading screens in BotW or TotK than actually playing the game, even though the micro-SD cards we use are oftentimes capable of significantly faster read speeds. That, more than anything else, takes you out of the game by interrupting the fun.

After that, smoother framerates, better draw distances, reduced pop-in, and more on-screen models are the next pain points affecting gameplay, but they're so far behind the abysmal read speeds from cartridges and SD cards that they pale in comparison.

Nintendo games don't suit me at all, but if they could not look as horrible maybe I'll get the new console anyway. $300 would be great, or even $400 for a beefy version if they have.

@mooglestar: I'm sorry the Switch isn't a tech head's dream, but anyone saying games like Super Mario Odyssey, Luigi's mansion 3 or Breath of the Wild/Tears of the kingdom look "awful" is full of so much crap it's leaking out their ears.

@YukoAsho: I don't think anyone is saying Nintendo games have poor art direction. Mario Kart 8 still looks nice after a decade. But actually, Mario Kart still looks better than Odyssey and Tears, because it can run at its intended 1080p resolution the whole time.

The problem with the Switch in docked mode is that it has to use dynamic resolution scaling on the vast majority of games in order to maintain a playable framerate. It can lower the resolution all the way down to 720p.

This isn't an issue in handheld mode since the screen is 720p to begin with. Games also look much crisper in this mode because of how tiny the screen is for that resolution. The pixel density is 236 PPI, which is insanely high.

But taking a 1080p game, scaling it down to 720p, and then re-upscaling it to fit your 1080p-2160p screen? It's like compressing a .jpg image at 67% quality five times. Sure, it might still have some appeal if the art direction is really good, but now it's also very crusty.

@YukoAsho: They just usually don't do anything for me visually. Not every single game, but the vast majority. Even a name as big as Pokemon; just look at those last couple games. They look terrible. That's not to say the games themselves are bad.

Also most Nintendo games are usually very cute, colorful, and family friendly, so the visuals fit that style. And that's not my vibe at all. Nothing wrong with it, but it just doesn't appeal to me. I tend to like darker games, with mature stories. For reference, the last few games I played were Elden Ring, The Quarry, Forbidden West, Doom Eternal, Ghostwire. Anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

@YukoAsho: COD and Assassin's Creed have been done in such abundance that I can't stand the sight of them, regardless of the visuals lol. COD in particular is about as visually uninspiring as you can get. To be fair I did play Valhalla, and enjoy it, despite it being terribly bloated.

@itsnota2mer: Just like the Wii U before it?

This is Nintendo we're talking about. They always swing for the fences. Their hits are almost all home runs (NES, Wii, Switch), but they strike out as often as not (Virtual Boy, Gamecube, Wii U).

And just for the sake of clarity, I'm not saying the Wii U or Gamecube were bad. They weren't. They both had some great games, including some of my very favorites. But they failed in the market, so "wildly successful" is far from being a sure thing here.

@Barighm: No disagreement. I was merely pointing out that it isn't a sure thing that it'll be "wildly successful". I wouldn't bet for or against it. I thought they had a sure thing after the Wii. The Wii U faltered in the market. I think they have a sure thing after the Switch. We'll see what happens. That was my point.

@aichon: "Their hits are almost all home runs (NES, Wii, Switch), but they strike out as often as not (Virtual Boy, Gamecube, Wii U)."

A somewhat simplified view. The WiiU was definitely a huge miss. While the Gamecube was technically not a commercial success, it sold about the same amount of units as the Sega Genesis, (and definitely had great games, as you mentioned). Mentioning the Virtual Boy is kind of funny, (surprised you didn't mention the Power Glove then).

Also, the SNES and various handhelds have also been very successful for Nintendo.

Yeah, betting on this next Switch being a huge seller is a no-brainer.

I mean, the VB was a standalone console, the Glove was an accessory for an existing console, so I wasn't gonna dish on it too much, especially given Nintendo's extensive track record of failed accessories (anyone remember the Nintendo Wii Vitality Sensor?; also, the Power Glove was the epitome of '80s "cool" and no one can convince me otherwise).

Your closing sentiment is exactly the same one I had when the Wii was in its waning year. The battle was Nintendo's to lose, and they did. I still have my Wii and Wii U hooked up, right next to my Switch, so I have every hope that Nintendo will knock it out of the park, but I wouldn't bet on it, given the extremes in their track record.

@aichon: The failure of the Wii U was the loss of interest from non-gamers and muddled messaging. The success of games ported to switch suggests that simply not being uber powerful wasn't the issue.
