Nintendo believes Wii U messaging issues corrected

Director of product marketing Bill Trinen admits mistakes were made highlighting Wii U as a brand new console, believes GamePad experiences may lure Xbox 360, PS3 gamers to new platform.

Nintendo made mistakes conveying the fact that the Wii U is a brand new console, director of product marketing Bill Trinen told GameSpot in an interview this week during the company's New York City media event. The executive explained that upon displaying the console from the first time last year, the company was inundated with questions of, "Is this an accessory for the Wii, or a new system?"

The problem didn’t get better quickly for Nintendo. CNN's (since-corrected) preview of the device at E3 2012 mistook the system for a simple Wii peripheral. And just a week prior, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to hype the technology, but the unquestioned gamer Fallon was obviously confused.

Bill Trinen.
Bill Trinen.

Fast forward three months to today, and Trinen now believes these marketing flubs are all but a memory. He said new marketing material for the Wii U will prominently feature the system and the GamePad, helping eradicate whatever issues consumers may have understanding what makes up the new system.

Elsewhere in the interview, Trinen confirmed there will be no multi-GamePad supported titles until 2013, explained why he believes the Wii U launch lineup will be the best Nintendo has ever had, and defended the Wii U’s generous four-month "launch window" period.

When I played Wii Sports in 2006, I immediately "got it." What game or application are you looking to with the Wii U to replicate this experience?

I think, particularly when you talk about Wii, what was beautiful about Wii Sports was anybody could look at it and say 'Oh, tennis' or golf or boxing and understand that. And you have that kind of instant 'Wow, this is different.' The thing that we're finding with Wii U that is similar but unique is that people are picking up the GamePad and people are having similar kinds of moments, where it’s like 'Wow. This is different, I didn't think I could do this with a game.' What's different from Wii Sports is that we're finding different people are finding that moment in different games. Obviosuly, in terms of showing off some of the breadth and possibilities with the Wii U GamePad, NintendoLand is really geared to do that. To show different ways you can use the GamePad.

"The thing that we're finding with Wii U…is that people are picking up the GamePad and having moments, where it’s like 'Wow. This is different, I didn't think I could do this with a game.'"

[Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime] said this morning that the launch lineup for the Wii U is going to be the best that Nintendo has ever had. Why do you think that this is?

Pretty simply, it's that 50 games in that launch window. What really strikes me, and what I’m excited about is the fact that we’re launching with a Mario game for the first time since the Nintendo 64. So that is big. And we've got NintendoLand, which really shows the diversity of gameplay with the GamePad. But at the same time, in that launch lineup, we’re seeing the content that from a gamers’ perspective, maybe you hadn’t seen on a Nintendo console in the past. We're seeing Call of Duty with online play right there in the launch window. ZombiU, and everything that it’s doing with the GamePad also is certainly more core content. You’ve got support from EA with the sports games; you've got the Bond game from Activision, so I think a lot of our third-party partners are really coming to the table with strong content right in that window. And on top of that, we've got exclusives as well, with one of my favorite games from one of my favorite developers, which is The Wonderful 101 from Platinum Games.

New Super Mario Bros. U is a Wii U launch title.
New Super Mario Bros. U is a Wii U launch title.

Launch window was a term we heard a lot today. It seems a little bit misleading because it's a four-month period [November 18, 2012 through March 2013].

I think that what's important is certainly with some past consoles, I would say GameCube might have been an example, you had launch day, and then you might not have had a whole lot in the way of additional content after launch day. And for us that’s why we talk about that launch window being so important. It's not just what’s there day one. It’s what’s there day one and then you’ve got this steady stream of content coming for months afterwards. And what that says is that if you’re going to go out and buy a Wii U, not only are you getting a great value for the system…but you're getting content coming at a continual pace. And the breadth of that content is so big that regardless of what your taste is you’re going to find something in those first few months that's going to keep you playing even after whatever games you bought in November.

What I was really going for there was that I think some may feel a little deceived because when you say "launch" you think close, but that's four months, or a third of the year.

Well, I guess one other clarification I would make on that is what we said today so far is that on day one, NintendoLand is going to be bundled in with the Deluxe set and New Super Mario Bros. U will be there day one as well.

THQ also confirmed today that Darksiders II would be a launch title.

Oh, and that's great. That’s the thing; today what we confirmed is two of our own titles. That’s not all that's going to be there on day one. If THQ has announced that, that’s exactly what we were hoping. Once we announce our games, the third-parties are going to start announcing their games in terms of what's day one and what’s coming after. I think that nobody wants to see a system launch with a few games on day one and then nothing for a few months. And that to us is why launch window becomes such an important piece.

Is there a target number you're shooting for with regards to first-party launch titles?

There is. But we'll update you.

Interoperability of devices seems to be growing in the household today. What is the role of the 3DS in the Wii U's future?

Nintendo has plans for Wii U / 3DS interoperability…but they aren't saying much just yet.
Nintendo has plans for Wii U / 3DS interoperability…but they aren't saying much just yet.

You got a little hint of that today when we confirmed Monster Hunter 3 for Wii U as well as for 3DS. And so that's going to be a good example of the interoperability between 3DS and Wii U. Also, we confirmed publicly already at E3 in 2011 that Smash Bros. is also going to do that. We know it's coming and that different developers are going to have different ideas about how to use that. And certainly our internal teams are thinking of that as well. Primarily, on launch day and during that launch window, what we’re really going to be focusing on is what are the unique experiences we can create with the GamePad.

Can you talk about how we’re going to be able to transfer our Wii Virtual Console data to the Wii U? That's kind of been a sticky point.

Oh, it's not a sticky point at all. You can transfer it.

Can you explain how that will work?

It's not sticky! (laughs) It transfers. With Wii U, obviously it has backward compatibility. The way that that transfer works is it's going to be similar to how you would transfer something from the 3DS to the 3DS XL. You'll basically by having the two systems connected, transfer the data over, and then what you can do is access that content by the Wii U GamePad main menu when you turn the system on, there's Wii mode, and that's where you go to play Wii games. And in there you can also find your virtual console or digital content there.

We were just a little confused about how that was all going to work.

It's going to work great (laughs).

Is Nintendo deliberately refraining from making many multi-GamePad-supported games, presumably due to the high cost of the controller? Because we haven't seen a lot of that.

No, actually, the initial launch window games, none of those are going to feature multiple GamePad support. For that reason specifically, the GamePad won't be sold as a standalone accessory on launch date. Once the content comes, and the teams are working on content that supports two GamePads…

At Nintendo?

Yeah, our teams are thinking about it. I'm sure to a certain degree the third-parties are also looking at that. But our anticipation is we'll start to see that sometime next year.

Do you think Nintendo has done a good enough job convincing current Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners to pick up the Wii U version of a third-party game?

"The question is do you want to just play those games the way that you’ve done in the past, on [Xbox 360 or PS3], or do you really want to see how can the GamePad create new experiences in the games that I like to play?"

I think what we're really looking at is, number one, what are the unique experiences that we can provide. And we're obviously doing that with our own games. And then from a third-party perspective, the thing is that we've got an exclusive in ZombiU that's really unique, with great use of the GamePad. We've got third-party games like Call of Duty. They've done a really good job of integrating the GamePad, particularly having that two player experience on two different screens. You're no longer playing split-screen; you can play together full-screen. And to me that in and of itself is a reason to go out and say I'm gonna get Call of Duty on Wii U because that's the way I want to play. Every single one of the launch window games is going to take advantage of the GamePad in some way that's unique, and so to me the question is do you want to just play those games the way that you’ve done in the past, on those consoles, or do you really want to see how can the GamePad create new experiences in the games that I like to play.

Lego City Undercover surprised a lot of people at E3. How early on did Nintendo know it wanted to have a partnership with Lego for a game of this caliber?

We've been working with [Lego] for quite a while. We knew that we wanted to have a Lego game for the Wii U launch. Legos themselves, whether it's bricks or games, I personally love them. For us, Lego City Undercover seemed like a natural fit, and the game is going to be a lot of fun.

The Wii U has often been mistaken as a simple Wii peripheral. CNN ran a story about it being a peripheral; it was mistaken on Jimmy Fallon, and a Wall Street story from today even had it wrong. Is this a problem? How are you going about addressing that messaging issue?

Nintendo made sure to highlight the Wii U GamePad and console on packaging material to avoid confusion.
Nintendo made sure to highlight the Wii U GamePad and console on packaging material to avoid confusion.

I think early on maybe we didn't do a good enough job explaining it. Certainly at E3 2011, probably one of the big learnings was, from the images we put out of the system, they all focused on the GamePad itself and some of them didn't even have the console in there, and that's probably where the original confusion stemmed from. And so ever since then you’ll notice, particularly when you look at the package front that we showed at the presentation today, you see the GamePad prominently, and you see the console prominently. Those two are intricately tied together and that's why we’ve been talking so much today about that seamlessly connected screen, because that’s really what it is. It is a brand new console and the console itself is doing a lot in terms of what’s inside that box. I think the other thing that’s really going to be key for people, particularly when we show things like Nintendo TVii… is that it's connecting through the Wii U console. And so we're still working on that. Clearly we're paying close attention to that and I don't think it's going to be an issue going forward.

So there was a definite shift, when Nintendo admitted that it was not doing this correctly. You knew that the messaging was off?

I think we saw that there was confusion.

Can you give a timeline?

Probably the first or second day of E3 last year. We saw right away that people are asking 'Is this an accessory for Wii, or is it a new system?' And if you go back and look at our social media channels, that was one of the first things we clarified. This is a new system, with a new controller, and the two are seamlessly connected together. We always want to make sure that A) what we're saying is accurate and clear, and B) that people are understanding what we're saying.

Wii U isn't perfect, it still has a few issues that need to be addressed that could probably be done with a "simple" firmware update or two, but I've had so much more fun with it than I have had with my 360 or PS3. Might be making this my main platform, first time a Nintendo system has held that spot since SNES.

Did you see the COD BlOps 2 demo? No more splitscreen isn't a gimmick it's the SHIZ! Also it would be pretty helpful to have a real time map on your lap while using the pro controller. I'm not a big fan of the tablet and would prefer the pro controller personally though.

Oh my goodness, I just read that Nintendo has plans for Wii U and 3DS interoperability. I would love to be able to play Spirit Tracks, Phantom Hourglass, Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and all the other great DS games. Maybe this system will sell.

Halo 4 will do better than the Wii U launch. Now if they had a Metroid and a Zelda + the New Super Mario Bros, Wii U then it would destroy the sales record.

You mean the fact that Kinect moved 10 MILLION units? Wow. I don't even LIKE Xbox all that much, and that statement just reeked of ignorance.

854 x 480 is hardly low res for a 6.2" screen, only slightly lower than the Vita. And again, I don't need numbers to show me that the GamePad's screen is low res since all these demonstration videos show the high quality visuals the GamePad is capable of.

If you're such a true gamer, then you'd know that just because the previous console didn't meet expectations doesn't mean the next one will follow suit. Nintendo is clearly taking the Wii U into a different direction and I bet the only reason why you think it's going to be the same as the Wii is just because it's called Wii U because the Wii U is much more powerful than the PS3/360 and will only be slightly less powerful than the next PS/XBox along with offering a huge variety of control options for unique gameplay experiences.

Only a true gamer would've read that article I posted instead of pushing it aside and making up stupid remarks like saying "Oh they got free Wii Us and the videogame analysts are fanboys because they're getting Wii U's."

Low res? Again have you been watching the presentation? When they were playing Call of Duty, the gameplay on the GamePad looked just as good as the gameplay on the big screen.

But there's really nothing to say to you, you're just a blinded spoiled wannabe gamer who thinks everything they know is right when it can't be farther from the truth.

It can do much more than a DS especially since it's detached from the main screen.

Gimmick gimmick gimmick, is that the only word you know? Such a gimmick indeed, that's why within the same year after it was revealed, Sony and Microsoft revealed their versions of it.

Of course you don't need new controls to change up gameplay, but adding in more options allows for a greater variety and more opportunities to change things up.

I am not getting a Wii U for myself as much as for my family. The Wii has served its purpose in our home for a while and the Wii U is going to take its place. The Gamepad is sure to be an interface that kids love. I know all 4 of my children take naturally to touch screens. Adults will love it too.

I don't think they are doing as well as they think they are doing - my wife still thinks it is an add-on. Others I have heard say their old Wii might need replacing and are confused at why this one is so much more expensive than a standard Wii... I think the majority of the world still thinks is is a Wii revamp more than a new console.

It is easy to see where the confusion is. NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii - all have very distinct names. They must be different. Wii U sounds the same with minor improvements (similar to a iPhone 4 and 4S. sure they are different, but not much right?) - Playstation, Playstation 2, Playstation 3. Clearly there is major progression there. The numbers get bigger. Xbox, Xbox 360 - again, huge jump and a change in number. So you either have to name it different, or increment #'s.

It doesn't help that consumers will be able to use the same controllers. While actually good, that only enforces the idea that it is the same thing with a tablet this time.

@raahsnavj Your right.

http://purenintendo.com/2012/09/16/toys-r-us-no-longer-accepting-wii-u-pre-orders/

"After only 3 days since the Wii U was initially available for pre-order many companies are ceasing to accept more pre-orders after a strong response from consumers. Many media outlets are saying the the Wii U is priced too high, Wii U games are priced too high or the Wii U is just simply not worth it. Based on the rate at which people are snatching up the pre-orders for BOTH the basic and deluxe bundles I do not think that Nintendo will have no problem selling their Wii U. In fact, I have always stood next to my claim that the Wii U will be as big, if not bigger than the Wii, but the response from consumers has truly shocked me."

The non Nintendo consumers don't seem very excited by Wii U.

Can't find that info anywhere else and it's bull to say that the Wii U is over priced when the PS3 still sells at $250, and people are always super quick to buy the latest smart phones and tablets that cost way more.

Can't wait for the Apple trend to be over. They're far too controlling, restrict the ability to upgrade their devices, and are the new casual heaven. Guess that means the sold out WiiU preorders are all due to legit "gamers' ;-)

LOL If you compare the basic to the deluxe it's a decent deal. Simply based on the quadruple storage. Now if one takes into account the game and the premium membership, it becomes a heck of a deal. Essentially the premium membership saves gamers $6 per full priced title. In addition you earn points which can be applied to future purchases. Honestly I'm more into retail than digital, but depending on how the points system works out, as well as how fast the games sale out, I may be buying more digital titles on WiiU. I already buy some on PS3, but that's more or less so I can also download them on my kids PS3.

My phone retailed for $700 unsubsidized when I bought it a year ago. I totally agree with you on price.

I know that but if they're willing to drop $800 of a device like that every year, then I don't see how $300-$350 is a big deal for a console that's supposed to last for at least 5 years.

@abHS4L88 @LindBergh2007 but a console doesn't do what a tablet or smart phone can do. One is useful for something then also plays games and entertainment.... instead of the other way around with consoles: useless except for games and entertainment.

I just recieved some pre-order reports from Pure Nintendo.

"Pre-Order sales are good, but mainly Retailers are CANCELLING them, stating that the unit is too overpriced and that since the console will ship in just 7 weeks, there's no need to carry a console that doesn't have shortage issues".

@LindBergh2007 LMAO,

Some might be cancelling, but it's unfortunate that others are snatching those cancelled preorders.

Why? Because all retail vendors i'm trying to pre order from are still sold out. No matter what negativity you attempt to stem from this, the damn thing's selling like hot cakes.

It's becoming the IOS of all consoles (As much as I hate IoS over Android)..

Why are there never this many people complaining about how the kinect is a gimmick or the PS move?

Because to these people, Sony and Microsoft are gods of gaming and can do no wrong, and if they do, they are quickly forgiven, now if Nintendo does something, it's horrifying and they'll automatically be judged for it for the next decade because gamer logic of course.

The wii got bought by a lot of hardcore gamers because the controls sounded awesome and we loved the idea of using them in big name games. Sadly all we got was a lot of wiggling the controller in no-name no-budget 3rd party games. I for one won't be making the same mistake twice. Although technically I also "fell" for the Kinect and Move. We really need a 3rd party to make a peripheral that works on all 3 consoles so developers can have a single experience to worry about, only then will we see a decent big budget quality cross platform game using any kind of motion-y controls.

They really try and push the "new experience" feeling with this but I remain skeptical of it. I will hold off purchasing it for now. I just don't see the WII-U as an entertainment powerhouse like Xbox and PS3. I remember the big reveal for the original WII. It was supposed to revolutionize how we play games. All we got were a lot of really bad games with mediocre graphics. They designed the WII Plus controller plug in (sold separately) then sold a built-in version. Ubisoft even had a camera peripheral for it. Gimmick after gimmick after failed gimmick. Any third party game worth owning on the WII has already been ported to Xbox Marketplace or the Playstation Store. I see the WII-U as a tool to sell more Mario games and mini game collections to children or more terrible third party games to us all! My WII has been collecting dust since Red Steel 2! I bought the Resident Evil Chronicles titles for my WII but I also just bought the PS3 ports so my WII is now useless. Zombi-U looks like a cool concept, but that's where my optimism ends!

I love how everyone seems to remember every piece of "gimmicky" hardware the Wii had yet forgets that nearly every console always has these extra peripherals (that no one forces you to use).

And might I ask what were these 3rd party Wii games that got ported to XBLA or PSN? The only Wii game I could think of that got ported over what No More Heroes to the PS Move.

@HybridExtreme WIi U could end up being great, depending on the list of games its library is going to hold. I did enjoy the Wiimote, but not so much the games that were on the Wii. Maybe Nintendo will redeem itself =). As much as I love Nintendo, I'm waiting for reviews and stronger titles. I'm not going to do like the Wii(I actually had 2 Wiis the week it launched lol)

They really should have went for a better Gpu instead of the controller gimmick. If the graphics were even 2x's better than current gen standards i think it would get more excitement. I do think the Ram and SSD additions are great, games SHOULD at least load a lot quicker if they pretty much look the same as they have for the last 6 years.

I'm still wondering if it can use those 128 GB SD cards.

@abHS4L88 @kavadias1981 I wouldn't be surprised if you can't considering that's how you install homebrew on the Wii. Granted Nintendo can upgrade there terrible security software but I wouldn't be surprised if they make it so you can't use flash like how you can't use USB. Still, I hope you can use them, that would be nice.

Should be able to. The SDHC standard is supported by many consumer grade electronic devices.

@kavadias1981

I installed Rayman Origins not knowing what installing meant XD, I actually only found out last week the purpose of that :3 so that's like 2-3GB of the 15GB I was talking about haha.

I already preordered Assassin's Creed 3 (preordered that in March), New Super Mario Bros. U (since I never owned a New Super Mario Bros. game), and Rayman Legends. I would've gotten Pikmin 3 if it was a launch title. I'm also planning on downloading Trine 2: Director's Cut on the eShop right away. UGH I CAN'T wait! I need to finish some more of my Wii games before the Wii U comes out :P I'm nearly done with The Last Story.

@abHS4L88 Alas, I seem to need it. My 120GB PS3 is completely full, that's AFTER deleting my game's install data. Gran Turismo 5 took up 25 GB alone! Still, hopefully the 32GB on my Wii U will be sufficient for a long time. So excited! I love that new console anticipation. Makes me feel like a kid again.

Okay good because I don't need like 500 GB, I know I can just add on my computer's external hard drive but that's going to be a pain, unless I do end up buying a 1 TB harddrive (for both computer and Wii U) although I did hear something about the console doing something to the harddrive so that only videogame data can be stored on it. Meh, I'll just stick with either an SD card or flash drive, much easier to take care of.

I have a 200 GB HD for my 360 and I've only used up like 15 GB so yeah, although I'm pretty sure I'm going to be downloading more games this time, I don't see myself going over 100 GB.

@dichromaticb3c @abHS4L88 Exactly. It's pretty standard these days isn't it.

@abHS4L88 Wow, they go to that size? Well, Nintendo haven't said that Wii U will only take SD cards up to a certain size. So that's good news. Their argument in the CVG article is solid too isn't it. As Reggie says, with memory prices dropping so rapidly it doesn't make sense to tie something like that to the price of the system.

Oh and I'll add you as a friend now.

I'm really struggling to understand what the WiU has to offer this generation of console gamer.

Most people who have either a PS3 or 360 will have a decent library of AAA games already & both consoles provide excellent support and services that have been tweaked to perfection over the years - that's going to be a hard act to follow.

The WiU has entered PS3/360 territory just as people are now looking towards next gen consoles and I'll be really surprised if there's a large take-up with the WiU.

Look at the trouble Sony has had with the Vita - trying to convince the consumer that there was still a place for a new handheld console - this is the situation Nintendo find themselves in - trying to market a console that doesn't really stand a chance against the mighty PS3 & 360.

What about people that buy everything? BTW I actually bought a Vita and love it. Even if I play my 3DS XL more frequently ;-)

@ecurl143 I buy a ton of games. Owning a game that was fun for me once, doesn't hold much value to me in the present or future, so who cares what AAA titles someone might own. You still spend much time playing AAA Snes titles?

I owned all 3 consoles for most of this generation. Somewhat recently tho, I sold my Wii and brought my PS3 and 360 to work and set them up in the break room cause they've been collecting dust for a while now.

And people are certainly not "just now" looking towards next gen consoles. PC gamers have already been held back by these dated consoles for a while now.

Considering how quickly people are willing to upgrade their smartphones, its absurd how long of a life span people want consoles to have these days.

The WiiU has 2GB of RAM. That's four times the amount when compared to "the mighty PS3 & 360"...

Technically it's 1GB of RAM for game access and 1GB of RAM for the console’s operating system, to allow for lag free streaming of the GamePad which is why it trumps SmartGlass and CrossPlay in terms of gaming.

I know, but most people don't understand the concept of shared vs dedicated hardware. Still 4X more than current gen consoles ;-)

The Wii U has sold out at nearly every retailer and it hasn't even been a week yet. Imagine what the launch window will be like.

It's been 6 years since there was a new console, I don't think it's going to take much convincing to get people on board, especially since it's clear that the 360 (and PS3 sort of) are reaching the end of their life cycle.
