Nier: Automata Review Roundup

Launch day is so Nier yet so far.

Nier: Automata's launch is just days away. The game comes out for PlayStation 4 on March 7 (March 10 in Europe and Australia), and with the release date now so close, reviews have started to go live for Platinum Games' action-RPG.

The PS4 and PC exclusive launched in Japan in February and reportedly lets players buy trophies using in-game currency. If you're curious to see the title in action, check out gameplay of some hacked allies or this gameplay of a steel wasteland.

In our review, critic Miguel Concepcion said the game "delivers a well-executed and refined combat system, the level of which alone makes Automata well worth the price of admission." You can read more in our full Nier: Automata review.

For a selection of critics' reviews, check out the roundup below. Or for a wider critical reception, take a look at GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

  • Game: Nier: Automata
  • Developer: Platinum Games
  • Platform: PS4, PC
  • Release: March 7 (March 10 in Europe and Australia) on PS4, March 17 worldwide on PC.
  • Price: US $60 / £42 / AU $100

GameSpot -- 9/10

"Thanks to Platinum Games' knack for riveting and gratifying combat, Automata is Yoko Taro's most exciting game to date. The combat mechanics click after hurdling a low learning curve, and the end result is a skillful dance where balletic dodges complement wushu-inspired aggression. Moreover, this multi-ending trip is generously peppered with surprises and revelations, as well as easter eggs that call back to the first game and the Drakengard series from which Nier spun off. It's a meaty, often exhilarating trek that showcases Platinum Games' and Yoko Taro's unique blend of genius." -- Miguel Concepcion [Full review]

IGN -- 8.9/10

"Nier: Automata is a crazy, beautiful, and highly entertaining journey full of nutty ideas and awesome gameplay. It may not include the most sensical story or compelling characters, but its frenzied combat--coupled with beautiful visuals and a stunning soundtrack--make it too much fun to pass up." -- Meghan Sullivan [Full review]

Game Informer -- 7.75/10

"Some parts of Nier: Automata genuinely thrilled and surprised me, but it is a constant exercise in sacrifice. Combat has improved compared to the original Nier, but it still isn't fully engaging. The progression system has cool ideas, but doesn't offer enough depth. The premise is fascinating, but it is dulled by repetition. Ultimately, tapping into the sad and unique story that flows under the surface of Nier: Automata makes these trade-offs worthwhile, but I'm disappointed by how deeply it's buried." -- Joe Juba [Full review]

Destructoid -- 9/10

"Nier: Automata is nearly as good of an RPG as it is an action game, which is a mighty tall order. It's tough to really strike that balance as many action-RPGs tend to favor one element over the other, but Platinum Games, with the help of Square Enix, has tapped into its innate ability to captivate us with combat while keeping the rest of the journey engaging." -- Chris Carter [Full review]

There are so many amazing games so far this year (Nioh, Gravity Rush 2, Horizon, Zelda, etc.), but I've honestly been most excited for this game. I would have purchased NieR, regardless of the score, but I can't lie, it's great to see it almost unanimously praised (It's still at 90% on metacritic). Just a little longer.

Sony has to come out looking pretty good. They basically had a slew of 4 touted exclusives in the last 6-8 months and they pretty much hit on all four. Between the Last Guardian, Nioh, Horizon, and now Nier, all four exclusives have been released to pretty rave reviews. I honestly expected at least 2 if not all four to flop, but can't complain about having four more good games to play.

It's kind of sickening how low review scores people like Gamespot gave the original Nier. That game was a bonafied masterpiece.

@Thanatos2k: the original game had really flawed combat system. But the music, damn the music was friggin amazing.

@sakaixx: The combat system had innovation oozing from every pore with the integration of bullet hell elements. Sure it was a bit clunky, but that being the weakest part of the game didn't diminish the masterful storytelling.

@fedor: I am afraid its not!

It isnt the game i hoped to be. I thought it would follow the footsteps of Nier...just with great combat mechanics Platinum tends to make. This sounds like a action focused game with rpg elements and that is what i didnt expected(hoped).

I play currently Neverwinter, action focused, tons of sidequests, tons of grinding(and its tiresome, that is why i pkay it in short sessions)...Automata sounds like that, its just technically and graphically better.

Like i said above,i wanted Nier 2 with PG-like combat but it seems the combat is the heart of the game.

Plan to eventually get it for PC. (too much on the plate at the moment) Question from me is, how much of the first game is necessary to fully understand the story? Never actually played that one.

@Thanatos2k: I plan to. I remember hearing of it, but it never caught my attention. Automata just reminded me of it's existence.

@artemis-v: it's set something like 600 years after the events of the original nier. So the first isn't a must play.

@artemis-v: It's not. This game is supposedly linked more to Drakengarde than Nier. You might get some references but otherwise it's a wholly complete story.

Nice to see the game got alot of positive reviews. With any luck this will spawn a neir remaster or a drakengard remastered collection (if i remember correctly their set in the same universe).

@sakaixx: After three straight Playstation action RPGs getting 9+ scores, I expect Platinum to ask MS permission to sell Scalebound to Sony, although it's more likely they will work with Nintendo again.

@Barighm: From what I've read, Platinum owns Scalebound out right. Microsoft just canceled the Microsoft funded work done up to that point. I guess, what has been created so far, that code is owned by Microsoft. Sony, or Nintendo, would have to fund the game from a new starting point. So, it's possible we could see Scalebound somewhere else, but I would wager, it will be something different, based on Scalebound. I hope that makes sense.

@Barighm: its business so you may never know what might happens. Bayonetta is still a great IP so who knows, it might go nintendo or it might go multiplatform.

@sakaixx: Normally that's true, but the lead dev on Scalebound is well known for his temper and has tweeted insults to publishers before. He was thankful of Nintendo for supporting Bayonetta 2.

Since they have a history of moving projects to other consoles, and Scalebound was their lead project, I think it's fairly safe to say they will seek to move it.

@Barighm: been hearing that MS is the one who got hold of the IP, thats why they are in power of cancelling it. The framerate of the game runs shit on xbone so a lot of sacrifices needs to be made to move to nintendo switch but hey, even bayonetta 2 happened.

Much prefer they choose to go multiplatform tho. Me and PS4 need more games.

@Barighm: Personally, I never got what little hype I saw for Scalebound. Just, everything from the protagonist, the graphics (the framerate!) and the gameplay did nothing for me. That being said, I hate the idea of a game being so far into development only to end up canned, and I'd still want to see it released in some form or another.
