Next-Gen Console Wars: 10 Steps to Dominance for the Wii U

What Nintendo needs to dominate in the next generation.

'

With Nintendo's Wii follow-up, the Wii U, due at the end of this year, the talk of next-generation consoles is already crackling. Soon we'll be overcome with rumors, leaks, and speculation about the eighth generation of game systems, which includes the next hardware from Microsoft and Sony. But what are at least 10 things each console manufacturer needs to do to find success in the next iteration of the system wars? Previously, Microsoft and Sony were in the spotlight. This week, it's time to see what Nintendo must do if it wants the Wii U to come out on top.

What Nintendo Needs to Do

Don't Pull a Sega
The Dreamcast was a fantastic piece of hardware with one of the best launch lineups in gaming history. It had revolutionary elements: keyboard compatibility, online functionality, a screen in the controller, and an add-on microphone. Yet, for all its innovation, the Dreamcast came out too early and was felled in large part by the release of the PlayStation 2 a year later. What was so special about the PS2? It had a DVD drive and, for many, it was their first DVD player.

For the Wii U to beat the later arrivals of the PlayStation 4 and the next Xbox, it must have some elements of future proofing. While it's unlikely for the Wii U to include a Blu-ray player, it must come with viable solutions for streaming media and cloud services. Of course, there were other reasons the Dreamcast had a short life span, and most of those reasons serve as a warning for Nintendo: provide the same content as the competition, don't become too niche, and don't get too focused on innovation (keep it simple, stupid).

Keep Cost Down
Rumors have the Wii U costing anywhere from $250 to $600. It's the first next-gen console being released, but its immediate competition is the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, both of which are still seeing high-quality games even toward the end of their life cycles. The Wii U is initially fighting against two consoles priced under $300 and a global economy that is still floundering.

A game system with a high-quality touch-screen controller may be more valuable to some than the pricey iPad, but people buy a portable tablet for different reasons than an at-home game console. Keep in mind that Nintendo's Wii had wild success because the traditionally non-gaming audience actually bought the system. Plus, it was affordable, different, and very casual. Converting those owners into Wii U buyers won't be easy if the price tag is too high.

A Controller that Improves Gaming
We've seen and experienced very little of the Wii U so far, and many of the impressions formed over the past year are made more on assumption than fact. The truth is that no one is certain how much the touch-screen controller will improve the games as a whole. Certainly, games made specifically for the controller and the system will be just fine. But can Aliens: Colonial Marines or Assassin's Creed III be superior to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions? Will these games feature gimmicky additions or will the Wii U deliver a wildly enhanced experience? It needs to be the latter, or the Wii U won't have much attraction to the core gamers who have avoided the Wii the past few years.

Solution for Traditional Gaming
Revolutionary features are great, but they can take you only so far. Aside from its technical limitations, the Wii has not been a great machine for traditional console gaming. Many gamers just want to sit on the couch and chill out with a controller in hand. For many, gaming is about escapism and relaxation. All the innovation in the world does no good if people can't lounge on the couch and zone out. There needs to be an option that services people who want a traditional gaming experience, or those folks will continue to support Sony and Microsoft.

Proper Online Service
Online gameplay has been critical for the Xbox 360's success, and online services have bolstered the PS3's popularity, yet Nintendo has been slow to adapt. The Wii U needs a legitimate online service--one that makes it easy to find and add friends, makes multiplayer gaming a priority for developers, and offers services on par with Sony and Microsoft.

Forget fancy controllers or the next Mario game. The long-term future of the Wii U relies on Nintendo embracing online. This is where Nintendo needs to find a way to be an innovator and not just an imitator. It's rumored that Nintendo is working with Valve to provide a version of Steam to the Wii U. If this is true, Nintendo will make a bold and necessary step toward establishing itself as an online console powerhouse.

Unplugged
A controller with a big touch screen is nifty, but the benefit of a tablet is that you can take it anywhere. The Wii U controller should not be strictly tied to the Wii U. You need to be able to use that giant tablet when the TV is off, when you're cooking in the kitchen or relaxing in the loo. Nintendo is nudging into Apple's world with its controller, and therefore the iPad is a very real competitor. The Wii U controller doesn't need the level of versatility of a tablet, but it can't just be a fancy remote control either. The movement in the next generation of gaming will be expanding the experience so that some part of the gameworld travels with you no matter where you're headed. The Wii U controller is a perfect platform for such actions.

No More Weak Ports
One of the Wii's failings was an inability to provide quality multiplatform ports. Most major Xbox 360 and PS3 releases had to be redesigned for the Wii, and not with the best results. Nintendo has proudly announced a number of ports of major upcoming titles that may look as good or better on the Wii U. That is great for the next year, but that won't serve Nintendo two or three years down the line when the next Xbox and PS4 are in full swing. Yes, the Wii U can handle a port of a current-generation game, but can it handle what is coming to the Xbox 720 and PS4 in 2015? If not, the Wii U will start to suffer a similar dearth of quality modern ports as the Wii.

Embrace the Past
Here's a no-brainer. Nintendo is still in the console business because of its iconic game franchises. You may not like any of the features the Wii U offers, but it's still the only spot for a new console Metroid game, the next Mario title, Zelda, and Mario Kart. Continue to mine the hits, and regardless of the other factors, gamers will come to the Wii U.

Become the Sports King
The Wii pretty much killed most sports fans' loyalty with weak and gimmick-filled versions of Madden and other franchises. Through the N64 era, Nintendo was actually well regarded for its sports games. From Tecmo Bowl on the NES to NHL '94 on the SNES to All-Star Baseball 2001 on the N64, many gamers had their first virtual sports experience on a Nintendo console. It's time to bring those sports fans back into the fold. The touch controller could be great for simulation sports, enabling players to draw out plays during a time-out in an NBA 2K game, as just one example.

No Caption Provided
This little box needs big online plans.

Live Long or Fade Fast
A strong launch lineup of games equal or superior to those on the Xbox 360 or PS3 would be a great starting point for the Wii U. However, Nintendo has made a habit of letting its platform lineups weaken a few years after release. If the Xbox 360 is any indication, console life cycles are getting a little longer.

A console has to be built to last, and that means continual support over the years. The first two years of a console matter, of course, but real success comes after year three. That's when developers start to unlock the real power of a system, when production costs lower enough to allow consoles to become much more affordable, and the sweat of a hard-fought launch are truly rewarded. Nintendo can't let up at all. It must be aggressive in pricing, exclusives, ports, and online services from year one to year six of the Wii U's life cycle.

Graphics matter, because in general companies that deliver great games will always try to push the envelope. If the system cant handle it, companies will not work with the system. The WiiU needs great games, im not talking the exact same games as the other consoles, but you can't make it with kiddy crap alone (like mario party). Great graphics make for great new rpgs for example. It does not have great launch titles, so only time will tell whether or not it lives or dies. Needed for me to actually consider buying one: SUPER SMASH!! DO IT!

Wii U Pro Controller... is pretty legit. Just saying. It's what they should have made for the Wii in the first place with the Wii Control and Nunchuck as secondary.

i dont see why there are so many xbox and PS fanboys here saying the next PS of xbox will blow the wii u out of the water.. this is untrue, i have no need for an xbox or PS due to the fact me PC is and always will be superior then i have the nintendo for something different, your cod or battlfield or what not on xbox or PS already looks better on my PC and we have a thing called mod support and DX11 and interchangeable hardware so bugger off with your "PS and xbox will be more powerful". who cares. PC for hardcore games etc then nintendo consoles for the latter.

@pokemonblackftw who cares if the ps4 or 720 have better graphics anyway thats what a PC is for, PC is number one in processing power and hardware support and functionality everyone should do themselves a favour and throw away their xbox or playstation unless its for consoles exclusives, i have my PC for my hardcare games and my nintendo for everythign else thats different no need for a PS or xbox problem solved....

BIG NEWS PEOPLE! There has been a Wii U Controller Pro announced, it looks similar to the 360 controller, but it's right stick is where the A, B, etc. buttons are, so the controller ''issue'', is gone!

Nintendo needs to make the leap of being just an first party console. This has plagued Nintendo for years. They need to start making new games besides the traditional Zelda, Metroid, Mario or they should just give up or buy Rare back.

"IDK man!" (a very stressful sigh) This is kinda a hard choice All these systems no matter how you try to compare them seem pretty much gimicky (Nintendos games are gimmicky except for hardcore) And Its not helping that Todays Generation is all about Graffics this Graffics that....Its not about having fun anymore. I just wanna have fun with some good games. Sony Microsoft Nintendo Apple somebody make a good console with some MFn good*ss games....I really want Nintendo to make some good game. But yall get my point

I like the idea of the online store being created by valve, steam is great and something similar on wii u would ensure they aren't behind sony and microsoft. The one thing i'm not sure about was the "unplugged" part. Nintendo has stated that the controller needs the console to run, and has already shown it being played with the tv off. Giving the controller its own processor would make it really expensive. And nintendo has the 3ds already.

@unbeatable100 The wii will need to be left on but it will probably (hopefully) have good signal strength so the controller can be used house-wide.

I totally agree with you Lone_Mullet, we all saw what happen with many of PS3's games when the console was launch. I don't have much fear with this console. They are already bringing Darksiders2 and we should expect more mature games so it's already a bonus if nintendo wants to attract people who always wanted to play nintendo's big titles but did not want to buy the console because of owing the in-existence of hardcore games.

if you ask me, the Wii U should avoid turning into the Xbox and PS3, it shouldn't use it's new graphics as an excuse to make gritty and bloody games, the hardcore gamers are a large resource of money but they're mostly hormonal teenagers who think themselves games buffs, and they're all critics, put all your money into a high quality game and then risk it not being liked and you also risk your future. they should keep up with the fun and cartoonish games, focus on gameplay rather than graphics, or they risk becoming a console that parents don't buy for their kids, they become a company that pumps out a new shooter every year that's the same as the last. the Wii is the highest seller because it has the most variety in it's games, like in evolution, put all your eggs in one basket, and you're doomed to go extinct.

im really doubtful about the Wii U being able to have a lasting effect on core gamers. The biggest reason for this is because one of the best things about the xbox 360 was its new smaller wireless controler that was simple and responsive. For me i dont want to play Battlefield 3 or Assaisns creed on an tablet that was converted to used as a game controler it just dosent make sense to me. Also why would you want a mobile device similar to the Ipad when you just spent all this money on an entertament system for you TV not a mobile device. Only time will tell but i think the Wii U will do worse than the Wii cause its tooo much gimicky stuff i think just my two cents

Cloud is the future.. whether we like it or not.. That being said.. the graphical output of a cloud system could hypothetically be 10 times stronger then the current PS3. No longer will the PC have the best graphics. Wii U is destined to be a failure.

I agree on the final part of the "Don't be a Sega" part. The PS2 was my first DVD player as well. Some sort of video playability is gonna be crucial for the Wii U's success. Even if it just lets people dump their MP4s on it to watch -like I do with my Android phone.

On the "traditional controller" front: Nintendo already has that. It's called the Classic Controller, and it works just fine. No rumble, but Hell...I don't need rumble when rocking Guilty Gear X2 on my laptop with Logitech Dual Action in towe.

Embracing the past is another good point. More Metroids, Zeldas, Smash Bros and the like would keep many Nintendo fans around. And keep the Virtual Console on board too. We love our old favs!

I don't know about you guys, but i think i wold be okay with a ps3 quality machine that will have new games on it for years to come, and only have to pay a reasonable price for it. I would buy a ps3 right now, but i know when the ps4 comes out, it will be pricey and the ps3 will be left in the dark. Im just looking for a system that will give me ps3 like graphics, and continued support with games, updates, etc. for years to come. I think wii u will give me that.

@pokemonblackftw From their rumored specs, they won't surpass the Wii U THAT much, maybe closer to PS2 vs GC/X-Box... Well, Durango won't anyways, but the PS4 is still up in the air, no?

I would just say one thing.

Wider third-party support.

If you got the ability to mod games I... I don't even know what I would do... Cry with happiness? Maybe. But back to the point, the problem with xbox360 and ps3 is that the companies have this HUGE monopoly on the console and the market, there's a reason there are more free games for the PC than on the xbox and ps3, it's because the only way you can get things published is if you sell the game for a price, because then microsoft/sony can get 70% of the money and... Well, yea, you get the point.

The idea about drawing up plays in 2K sports games actually sounds great, would love to see that type of innovation implemented. Otherwise, I'm not particularly optimistic about the Wii U in general.

I just scan through the rest of the article but a read significant portions of it to understand where it was going. Um, this isn't 2005, its 2012 and a lot has changed, a lot. I don't even think handheld consoles are viable anymore due to the processing power and convenience of the smart phone. Thanks to smart phones, digital cameras are taking hit since every smart phone comes with a competent camera. Having said that, and back on point, I don't think Nintendo can continue with that strategy, I don't even find the Wii U appealing anymore. The only thing that keeps Nintendo afloat is its first part titles. The casual market's eyes are set on the shiny portable devices--tablets and smart phones--for their casual gaming...Nintendo's new console, not so much.

I'm sick of people saying "smartphones will kill handhelds" despite sales of handheld devices only INCREASING (excepting the Vita). Handhelds never relied heavily on the casual market (EVERYONE loves Tetris) and the masses that play "touch the fruit" or "fling the bird" are the same people that were satisfied playing snake and Tiger Electronics games.

That said, you pegged it dead on.

Nintendo can't rely too much on the casual market this time around since the vast majority of those buyers are now eating up tablets and smartphones. The only way I see them grabbing their attention again is if they make the Wii U more of a super easy entertainment hub, allowing the controller to work to their advantage over others in the field. A good and cheap HDD along with the expected streaming and download services is all that's needed along with a simple(ish) and elegant UI. For the core audience... They just need to catch up and TRY.

These are all good points. I hope Nintendo has thought of these things. With the Wii going completely dark the last few years, I hope they realize they can't just ride on a year of success. This has the potential to be an awesome console and a success... learn from past mistakes, Nintendo!

nintendo seriously needs to drop the side scrolling games for large consoles. i don't know how they get it through their heads that thats a good idea to focus a large portion of their games on. stop going for family friendly. these days, most little kids are still going to buy and love gears of war or halo.

but kids don't chose their first console, parents do. what parent is buying their kid a PS3 or Xbox after seeing Dead space? "family friendly" means what it means, anyone can play it, newer games won't sell because you need to be a gore loving teenager to play them, the hardcore gamer base is doomed to die because all the games are targeted at critics, by which i mean people who only accept the best.

kids ask for the console, their parents buy it. kids see more things that interest them in the 360 and PS3 and parents don't usually research in depth about the appropriateness of the games on the console.

true, true, but lbp was like a revolutionary sidescroller. the stuff involved with it was much different from just about any other side scrolling game, while nintendo sticks to the basic formula made in the 80's and 90's with a few shiny modifications here and there over the years. (at least when referring to the sidescrollers)

see, my argument is that the crowd that actually follows nintendo isn't enough. it's smaller than the crowds following the xbox 360 and PS3 because their ideas aren't as interesting to a majority of people in the world. So saying that that kind of game is the best selling within the crowd following nintendo doesn't really say anything.

when call of duty 3 came out, it was one of the most popular games on the wii at the time. super smash brothers is more popular than other than many other nintendo games, and it is MUCH MORE VIOLENT than other nintendo games, regardless of the absence of blood. zelda's most popular and best rated games are almost always the 3rd person exploration version of games, not the top down cartoonish versions. and there is no star fox FPS but regardless, it is also not a side scroller.

yeah. the wii does. and those are the more popular games. but think about the xbox 360 and PS3. gears of war series, halo series, resistance series, assassin's creed series, valve games, grand theft auto games, dead space, god of war. it goes on and on and on. nintendo HAS tried to make their own chapters in some of these series, but they have been poor and usually a top down or side scrolling version. yet they still are the more popular and better rated than many other wii or DS games.

@galduke okay im sorry but you are wrong dude. My best friend that lived down the street from bought a Wii and the only game i honestly played on it was super smash bros, zedla and a star fox RPG/FPS. that was it. the games i wanted to play were all on my xbox 360 which is why i never wasted my time withe Wii hell the only decent FPS you can get for the Wii is Call of duty 3 which probally not many ppl know what that is which came out like 10 years ago. Ninentendo dosent make games that appeal to males from 14 to 28 outside of the occasional remade classic. when was the last time a new IP on the Wii made a major change in gameing. There is a small dedicated ninetendo fan grp but they are small and only that small grp and maybe some parents and older people want Wii stuff. Everything Nintendo makes is geared tworads kids and casuals and the gaming industry is leaving nintendo behind

@Blashbuck How many side-scrollers did the Wii have compared to the 360 and PS3? And way to peg the GOW and Halo crowd! Joking, joking...

I honestly think your talking with pure ignorance right now, Nintendo has been plenty open to violent (im)mature games for a good long while now (No More Heroes anyone?) and outside of NSMB (the Paper one too) and that Wario game, I can think of Rayman Origins (it's on everything) and... uh... that one Vanillaware game.

And what's so interesting about "gritty grey/brown shooter 3.5: Expansion Pack Spin-off Edition"?

You say it's one of the best selling games on the system...but is your number taking into consideration the bundle that Nintendo had with NSMB?

why does GS insist on giving "advice" lately? this is a games site, not Dear friggin' Abby.and i'm pretty sure that out of the many reasons the Dreamcast died, the lack of a DVD player wasn't number 1. or 2. or 3.

@-The-G-Man- Gamespot listing things they want to see in a next gen console on the eve of the E3 before it's shown in detail?!? Preposterous!

And about the Dreamcast blah blah blah DVD blah? Yeah, it pretty much was a big reason for it's fall. Without it, the PS2 would've been hampered both technically and in sales. Hell, in Japan the number one PS2 seller was The Matrix on DVD. Nintendo only survived that gen due to it's rabid fanbase and the GBA's success. I personally would say the other two top reasons for it's fall were poor software quality control (which lead to direct ports of PS1 and N64 games) along with a less than stellar advertising campaign.

I liked the read. Where can I read about the 360 and PS3 necessities for success? Any links?

A chasing sequence where you drive using motion control of the wiimote and your friend who is holding the tablet controller turns he's back on the TV so he can see who is chasing him and you (he's partner). This is something I WANT TO SEE ,and on the wii U only....

This is much better then the last two articles this guy wrote. The new tablet controller can be used for traditional gaming I believe. It has two sticks and face buttons. From there it is up to developers to actually put out games that are more traditional. Then again if you want traditional gaming then get a Sony or Microsoft system. Nintendo has always pushed the envelop and getting one of their consoles has almost never been traditional. (Gamecube as exception of course.)

I do agree the online service needs to come. Although it doesn't need to be a main priority. To me that is the problem with the current generation of gaming. So much work goes into online gaming that local gaming is boring and useless. I miss the days of split screen, co-op. Developers just make single player experiences and I want a living, breathing person playing with me that I can talk to. Even with shooters, I want a good online and offline co-op experience. To me, Halo and Gears did this the best. More games need to be like this. I also would like to see some RPG's like this. Killing that dragon was fun, but I wish I could have shared that moment with someone else, or even my friend right next to me. I mocked Nintendo in the past for not doing online, but now I can see where offline is just as important and it needs just as much attention.

@jayd02 Actually the gamecube had one of the most underrated innovations of gaming. It had the best and most comfortable controller I have ever used across all systems. My friends and I've tried them all and we agree that GameCube's controller is the best, especially for fighting and RPG games. Smash Bros can only be played with a GameCube controller....

TOP 10 things my PERFECT System would include:

1. Backwards compatibility (even if you had to download old games at a reduced price)

2. Old game system buy back program, see #1. (Call it a loyalty bonus!)

3. Cloud save data accounts

4. In game/ voice recognition (voice commands already!)

5. Controllers with touch screens like the PSVITA (for HUD's, maps, Inventory, minigames, commands, etc...)

6. Better use of motion control in action games (Skyrim should have been MOVE compatible at release!)

7. Fully customizable home screen (i.e. has apps to download onto your startup menu)

8. Brand new experiences (fewer remakes, updates, spinoffs, sequels and prequels)

9. Online matches against people with diffferent gaming consoles (MW3 XBOX vs. MW3 PS3!)

10. $49.99 price tag on all full games titles ($60 is the reason why so many people buy used or bootleg games, the economy dropped, but game prices rose 20%, seriously)

@DoodaPooda So bored... It's like 4:30am and here I am commenting on a bunch of comments...

1. Pretty much a shoe-in at this point.

2. Not very loyal or profitable. What the hell would they do with the old consoles?

3. Cloud saving could be convenient or a nightmare, like any server side service (Diablo 3 lol).

4. ... Why? With so much ambient noise around consoles, pressing a button - then speaking - would be required... and the purpose is defeated. Also voice recognition isn't that reliable yet.

5. You mean like the Wii U. The Vita is an entire console and the described applications were already done on the DS.

6. No, stop it. It rarely works as good as a standard controller and any immersion is negated when you need to turn, barely catch your remote (or drop it), interpret movement directions wrong, etc.

7. Don't the Wii and 3DS already do that? Or do you mean more like the custom UIs that hacked PSPs used to have? THOSE were cool.

8. Dude, not gonna happen. Even if a console did this, too many people will end up clamoring for a COD, Upset Fowl, etc., and wouldn't you be bummed if a GREAT game you loved never got a sequel, spin-off, or what have you?

9. That will be difficult but it's far from impossible. Aren't there games that can/will do that between the PS3 and PCs?

10. That $60 price tag was introduced well before the economy dropped. Games are WAY more expensive to produce now than they were last gen, and even then games were more expensive in the gens before last! I specifically remember seeing 64 games priced at $65+ sometimes and some SNES titles being $80! Hell, last gen we were pampered...

Alright, anymore dreams for me to deconstruct and crush?

For the Wii U securing the casual base + drawing the hardcore = Success.

The price will win the casual gamers, but the games, graphics, and online features wins the hardcore.
