Next Battlefield Game Not Arriving Until 2025 At The Earliest

EA takes a new entry in the FPS franchise for this year off the table.

7 Comments

Don't hold your breath for a new Battlefield game this year. EA has announced that the next entry in the franchise won't be included in the company's fiscal year 2025 schedule, which runs from this April 1 to March 31, 2025.

Spotted by Battlefield Bulletin, EA CFO Stuart Canfield talked about the company's future during an earnings call for the third quarter of fiscal year 2024. "Looking beyond [fiscal year] 2025, over the next couple of years, we expect our net bookings growth to accelerate, bolstered by our portfolio of industry-leading IP," said Canfield, who's also an EA executive vice president. "Compounding growth within our core sports franchises, new content and engaging experiences across our massive online communities, and iconic new releases like Battlefield, Sims, and other in-development titles, provide the inflection point that fuels net bookings growth and increases underlying profitability."

Now Playing: Battlefield 2042 | Season 6: Dark Creations Gameplay Trailer

Canfield doubled down on no new Battlefield until 2025 at the earliest later while responding to a question, as well. "And we've called out also that Battlefield is not in our [fiscal year] 2025 outlook," he said. The last installment was Battlefield 2042, which was released in 2021. It's still receiving updates as Season 6: Dark Creations launched last October for the game.

Back in 2021--after Battlefield 2042 came out--EA discussed building a "connected Battlefield universe" for the future. In addition, Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella was put in charge of overseeing the FPS franchise. Last year, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said the next Battlefield would be a "reimagination" of the series. It was also revealed that Burnout developer Criterion is working on the next Battlefield, too.

Good. I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face, make Bad Company 3, but don’t do it unless you do it right. Stay true to the Bad Company gameplay. Don’t turn it into COD.

2025 or 2040, there's no talent left at the studio. It doesn't matter when the next BF arrives, its gonna be garbage full of mtx cuz EA can't help themselves. BF1 was the last good BF game, and BF4 was the last TRUE BF game. We ain't seeing a return of quality, and the "trust us FAM" bs we heard pre BF2042 release ain't gonna work either.

@hardwenzen: I'm going too say bf5 was the last good battlefield game. I enjoyed that one a lot. But 2042 reminded me of a large scale cod with bad physics. I didn't like it at all. But the next battlefield will beat 2042 guaranteed cause you would think they would learn from 2042. Thier own development team know that 2042 it was a disaster.

@hardwenzen:

I don't think it's talent they are missing, it's computer knowledge and programming. I mean even if they are new developers all they need is to play past bf titles that were great and get ideas of what to create. If they are creating a modern bf titles, bf 3 and 4 is what they need to study. It's not really talent that creates video games it's knowledge of video games and how they work and being able to imagine and have the tools to create something fun.

@hardwenzen: I am liking BF 2042 all right now and don't do mtx either but agree with your BF1 and BF4 comments. Both were much better than 2042. One of the many reasons I prefer Battlefield to COD is releases lasting several years instead of 1 so I am happy there won't be a new one for a while.

@lokar82:

From watching videos of streamers the games weapons balancing is a joke. Hopefully they ditch everything about bf2042 for future bf titles, menus included.
