New Skylanders Toys Released to Benefit Autism Awareness

Plus, Activision sets up employee education and donation-matching program for Autism Awareness Month.

Activision has announced a new Skylanders-based initiative to help raise awareness for autism. The company is releasing new "Light it up Blue" Skylanders toys for April's Autism Awareness Month. The new line of SuperChargers toys are blue and white, modeled after Autism Speaks' official colors.

The new "Power Blue" toys include the characters Splat and Trigger Happy, as well as their vehicles Splatter Splasher and Gold Rusher. The blue and white color scheme of the toys will also be displayed in-game. The toys are available now in the US and Europe and come to Canada on April 1.

"Since the debut of the franchise, we've heard from parents that Skylanders plays a special role in the lives of their kids on the autism spectrum," Skylanders executive Josh Taub said in a statement.

"The entire Skylanders team was deeply committed and proud to bring these special toys to life. If they can put a smile on a child's face, then we know we've done our job right."

Alongside the new toys, Activision is launching an employee education and donation matching program for Autism Awareness Month. Activision is also giving its employees the opportunity to participate in the Autism Speaks Walk on April 2 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

The company said it is also making donations to some autism-related non-profits.

Activision's Skylanders series marks the first time Autism Speaks has partnered with a video game and toy series, "and we couldn't be happier," Autism Speaks vice president Peter Morton said in a statement.

You can learn more about Autism Speaks at the group's website.

As an Aspie, Autism Speaks can go right to hell and burn alongside Ride to Hell and Big Rigs. This is a terrible tie-in.

@hystavito: Autism Speaks are more about curing the condition than helping those afflicted cope. They're also mostly comprised of parents rather than actual Autistics voicing their thoughts and opinions.

It still seems like Activision is profiteering from this... Good cause in general (don't know whether the specific org is thrifty or wasteful -- TBD), but perhaps I just despise ATVI enough that I can't give them credit -- IF it's due.

@ArcoJawa: YES! It would be great if they teamed up with an Autism foundation that actually HELPS and Supports Autistics, rather than saying we are a burden and wanting to eradicate us.

The definition of autism has become so broad it can be applied to just about anybody a child being shy or introverted does not necessarily mean he has a "mental disorder" just becuase society generally does not consider that to be desirable personality traits. American children have so many problems because we create these problems parents should not believe everything the "experts" say but of course you are not allowed to say autism is not real just a made up word by people who want to control our behavior and thinking in corpo-fachist America because it's the truth.

Kids, there is nothing wrong with you just because you are not the way the "experts" say you "should be." What is wrong is our over-controlled lives in modern society. The answers you need are not in a bottle of pills but in G-d.

@moonbeam2: Educate yourself man. I know a fair few kids with somewhat severe autism. Please stop talking nonsense. Experts are experts for a reason, because they did the research that we didn't, that's why it'd be nothing short of ignorant to ignore them and take up your advice.

@moonbeam2: Austism awareness has increased massively so yes there are a lot of parents that worry their child has autism and might try too hard, so to speak, to get it diagnosed as such. This has happened with other things like ADHD, and will probably continue to happen. The rest of what you said I'm not so sure I can agree with :).

@moonbeam2: God won't cure autism. It's not made up either. Do you live with it? Are you autistic? are you raising a child on the spectrum? I assure, it's not some made of fad by corp fachist America.

@alegionforliam:

Autism and shyness is not something that can be "cured" any more than for example laziness or stupidity could be as it's not a disease they are personality traits and part of who we are as individuals be they good or bad. G-d can give you the spiritual strength you need to make yourself a better person in that way it may be cured drugs can not and will only harm you in the end.

@moonbeam2: Disease? It's a disorder. You can call it a personality trait I guess but that doesn't stop it from being debilitating in many cases.

Oh, and if god were as gracious as you believe, why are people seeking medical aid? Why did what started as a largely religious western community, collectively turn their backs on the super-powered cure all you call god, when belief in such a character is all you need to lift the woes of the world? Autism doesn't exist, but a being only mentioned in texts of unknown origin written millenia ago does?

You should put more thought into what you think you know, as well as what you believe others don't.

As far as I know they didnt. I never claimed belief in G-d is a panacea to all of life's problems either was only speaking about this particular topic in article not all medical science, looks to me like you are resorting to typical atheist strawman arguments.

@moonbeam2: I'm going to go ahead and take this moment to post some more information. As you can see from my post below I am the father of a severely Autistic child, and my brother actually has high functioning Autism (he just turned 30 but mentally is 8, has been for years.)

Autism is a bit more than just being awkward. Autistic people have a fundamental disconnect from most social situations that all other humans "just get." They cannot naturally read into body movements, social cues are hard to understand, and empathy is all but absent (which is why most Autistic children actually find it funny when others get hurt. The face we make when hurt is funny to them.) They struggle to make eye contact in natural conversation, etc. etc.

Since we don't know what physically causes Autism, we can only go off of the results. This means that you can be on the Autism spectrum after being in a car accident and having brain damage, causing the above issues to surface. Another problem is that those born with Autism are commonly issued other (separate) disorders such as Mental Retardation (what my son and brother are also diagnosed with). Another common disorder is seizures. These are not Autism but instead very common disorders given to those suffering from Autism.

Going off what you ended with, every single person has problems they need to overcome. We are all struggle with things others do easily. It's part of life and healthy to work on overcoming them.

@Sefrix: You can't "get" autism from being a car accident.... it's a neurological disorder, that you're born with....

@alegionforliam: So are seizures and you can start getting those after brain damage. Anything that affects the brain and how it functions can cause many issues after "recovery." My only point in mentioning this is that It's not something like Down Syndrome that is straightforward from birth.

I do 100% agree that your born with it though. It was never my intention to claim you can "get" autism for silly things, sorry for the confusion! :)

@Sefrix:

What you described sounds more like mental retardation than autism which are two completely different things other things you described are not disabilities but personality traits. How we socially interact with others is a learned trait not something you are born with nobody "just gets it," there is no known physical cause because it doesnt exist per se other than in the person's mind.

I understand there is such a thing as real mental illness however with 1/5 of children being diagnosed and medicated for "mental health" issues these days psychiatry (which is a field that has always largly been within the realm of a pseudoscience) has gotten way out of hand, manufacturing it's own "ailments" usually based on common problems using abstract untested or even untestable theory then offer the "cure" as snakeoil salesmen have always done there is little proof most psych-meds are even effective at doing what the pharmaceutical companies claim they do other than those acting as a tranquilizer or stimulant but that leads to the problem of addiction.

Parents should ask themselves if they want to give the kids mind-altering drugs based on unproven theory or if it's better we accept people for who they are and stop trying to find things wrong with them or at least stop calling everything an illness.

@moonbeam2: I mentioned the difference between mental retardation and autism. My son has both and they are separate diagnosis's. I have a cousin that is autistic but not mentally retarded in any way. They don't always coincide, but like seizures are pretty common in those diagnosed with autism.

Cure's are terrible money grabs by people and corporations that pray on desperate parents. I've had this discussion with my wife several times and even if there was some "cure" we wouldn't accept it. My child is an amazing boy and I love him just the way he was given to me.

@gamingdevil800: As someone with Asperger's (which is rather similar, but not as severe as Autism) it's upsetting for me particularly. I remember finding out that a classmate was pretending to have AS to cover for his poor behaviour, and I don't think I've been more offended in my entire life.

I have 4 children, one of them being severely Autistic (he's 10 but non-verbal and at around 1.5 years of age mentally) so I think this is great. Obviously the toys like this are meant for more high functioning autistic children, but the idea, cause, and care of any special needs group is a great move of any company so i'm really glad to see this actually be a thing.
