New Play Control Donkey Kong Jungle Beat Hands-On

We trade in our bongos and try to keep the beat in Nintendo's upcoming New Play Control offering.

Nintendo's latest New Play Control has targeted Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, a GameCube game from 2005, which is really not that long ago but it seems that the age of playing with bongos is over. Part of the appeal of playing the original Jungle Beat was that you used the peripheral from the rhythm game Donkey Konga to platform your way through the banana-infested kingdoms. In New Play Control Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, you trade in your cylindrical percussion for the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, and instead of keeping a beat with your hands, it's morphed into a simple platformer in which you run, jump, and shake the controllers like a pair of maracas.

Vent your frustrations with the Wii Remote.
Vent your frustrations with the Wii Remote.

As the big ape with the power-red tie, you travel through kingdoms collecting as many bananas as you possibly can. The controls are obviously very different, so instead of tapping on bongos and clapping your hands, you're using the Nunchuk to move, the A button to jump, and you shake the Wii Remote to clap. The Z or B button can be used to do backflips and ground-pounds in conjunction with the A button, but swinging from vine to vine requires that you shake the Wii Remote, which can wear down your enthusiasm when playing for long periods of time. Frequent reminders will appear to tell you that you could use a break, given that there is a fair bit of waggling in this adventure, especially when you face a boss.

The game is also harder this time around because you have a health meter and a limited amount of lives. You can't just prance around the jungle without the worry of dying. Considering that you have more control over DK with the new controls, you need to put more effort into pummeling enemies and avoiding getting hit. You're no longer protected by collecting an enormous amount of bananas, but grabbing lots of the potassium-rich food source is still valuable because it gives you a health advantage when it comes time to face the boss at the end of each stage.

Combos are still included; if you string a number of moves, such as a backflip onto a series of wall jumps, you'll gain even more bananas when DK claps his hands happily over his head. Pressing A twice will let you gather the surrounding bananas in midair, and aiming with the Nunchuk while shaking the remote aims your sonic clap. It'll take a few levels to get into the swing of things, but we found that after each stage, your arms are going to require a break from all that shaking.

Do what DK does best--hunt for bananas.
Do what DK does best--hunt for bananas.

Visually the game still looks as great as it did when it originally came out on the GameCube. Jungle Beat may have appeared only four years ago, but there's a new and growing audience now that can experience this simple but endearing platformer on the latest Nintendo system. Look for New Play Control Donkey Kong Jungle Beat when it is released on May 4.

I recommend not getting this, because you can get Donkey Kong Jungle Beat for Gamecube with bongos for about 20 bucks and the Wii version's probably gonna be anywhere from 30-50 dollars.

I'm thinking the next "New play control" games would be Wind Waker or Luigi's Mansion...but that's just me. But this DK might work :D

a DK designed with the original intent of being a true non-gimmick platformer would be nice. It's been a while. Is anyone starting to get a bit tired of these 'new play control' gamecube rehashes though, or is it just me?

Is that insanely huge divine bunch of bananas going to be in this game? That is so bonkers! But hey, this is about a BROWN gorilla wearing a red tie with a name of "Donkey Kong", so it won't probably matter - as long as the game is solidly fun, that is. We all remember what a horrible piece of crap Barrel Blast was.

From the look and sounds of things this one may be a big hit for all those who remember it and stayed away from it. A lot of people say they'll try it. I know I will get this the next time I see it in a store. Without the bongos it will feel closer to a traditional platformer. Here's to the resurrection of a real DK platformer, close to what Donkey Kong on SNES was.

@ buffdaddy69 Its a nice opinion, but you didnt give any reasons. So let me explain what is a control for me, if i play a car games, i love to play it with a handwheel, if i play a rail shooter i like to play it with a gun, so we have the perfect control which can do everything, that is the wiimote, so think about this, imagine a gta 4 with handwheel and gun, is isnt amazing?? if you are a gamer, you have to look forward and se that in the future te interaction with the games will be the best way to play, as i can see that you are a ps fan, i recommend you to look for the next ps control, which is developing with the ACM tecnology.

Why don't they just make a new Donkey Kong Country game? I loved those games for the SNES. I think a new 3D take on them with some Co-op thrown it would be awsome.

This game is so much more fun with the bongos, just as it was intended to be played from the original inception of this game's design. Nintendo should just make a brand new Wii DK game. DK is one of Nintendo's biggest IPs, and he's been out of action for a while. He needs to make a comeback.

I'm eagerly wating for both of NPC Metroid Primes. I'm dying to see how they'll shape up on the Wii. I imagine it will be more like Corruption, more FPS-esque, but I thinks it's ok.

I might actually check this out. The bongo controls were fun, but I found them incredibly frustrating, sometimes innacurate, and tiring. Plus, besides Donkey Kong Country, this is the best DK game out there. I was impressed NPC Pikmin, so I might give this a whirl.

It looks fun but I agree with my fellow gamers, using the remote just wont have the same feel as the bongos. And if I'm honest I commend Nintendo for their business strategy. Re-releasing a game that requires no development but will likely garauntee sales. Profit all the way. However, as a gamer all I can see from Nintendo these days is laziness. The last game which actually seemed to have some effort put in was SSBB. Ever since then we've had nothing new from Nintendo. That is almost a year ago now! I mean, where the hell are the Nintendo games we should be expecting? Iwata said that he hadn't forgotten about gamers but he hasn't actually released anything, in a year, to prove that. What is all that profit Nintendo is making actually going on? Because clearly it isn't new video games for their fans. I dunno, I've lost all faith in them to be honest.

If this game doesn't allow you to play the game where swinging the Nunchuk is like banging on the left bongo and swinging the Wii Remote is like banging on the right bongo then forget it. I'd much rather stick with the original game. The fun of this game was banging like crazy on the bongo.

I dunno, it would probably be just as frantic and exhausting as physical bongos to pound empty air to make DK beat up everything that moves. Personally, I'd like an option to play some sort of "classic mode" to make DK move right by waving the Mote, and the Chuck to move left, 'cause I heard the stick moves DK now, which brought me down a bit...

The entire point of this game was to use the bongos - and because of that it was a blast. Pummeling a boss while watching Donkey Kong's fists go back and forth at supersonic speed... doing that with waggle or button presses is just not going to be as satisfying. I dunno, the whole tactile sensation of the bongos will be missed.

I really don't like this. I see on how Barrel Blast flopped, and I think I see the same with this in the future. This should stay on the Gamecube and just be playable with the bongos or Gamecube controller.

I don't know if I like this change. The whole point of the original was the bongos. This seems like a step back.
