New Perfect Dark Revealed From Xbox's The Initiative Studio

Microsoft's new studio The Initiative has finally announced what it's working on.

One of Microsoft's newest studios, The Initiative, debuted its new Perfect Dark game at The Game Awards 2020. Teased as a mix of old and new (the original Perfect Dark was developed by Rare back in 2000), Perfect Dark is a first-person, stealth-driven shooter set in a futuristic setting, starring Agent Dark. It's coming to Xbox and PC. Check out the trailer below.

Judging from the trailer, it appears that series protagonist Joanna Dark--last seen in Xbox 360 launch title Perfect Dark Zero--will be returning. Perfect Dark was, back in 2000, one of the Nintendo 64's most beloved and acclaimed games, offering bot-enabled multiplayer, a deep campaign, and a huge selection of interesting weapons. It also had a plot that veered heavily into aliens towards the end, so it'll be interesting to see if this game has a sci-fi bent to it, too.

Like the original, this new version will also feature spy work and espionage. Perfect Dark (2000) was developed by the team behind GoldenEye 007.

Fans of the original will recognize the Datadyne logo that pops up towards the trailer's end, and Joanna's silenced pistol might look familiar, too.

Founded in 2018, The Initiative is led by quite the veteran-filled team. Members of the studio include God of War lead producer Brian Westergaard, 12-year Crystal Dynamics veteran Dan Neuburger, 16-year Microsoft veteran Blake Fischer, former Respawn recruiter Annie Lohr, former Crystal Dynamics recruiter Lindsey McQueeney, and Red Redemption 2 writer and designer Christian Cantamessa. The team is led by former Square Enix and Activision boss Darryl Gallagher.

There are still plenty of questions we have about Perfect Dark, including whether it'll be an FPS game, and whether it'll feature extensive multiplayer options, which have been a major part of the series in the past. Hopefully we'll learn more about this major Xbox exclusive in 2021.

Hype is real, loved the trailer. That'll be a 2022 game at least, but still, can't wait!

What a waste of talent. They form a studio with all these talented veterans and then they put them on Perfect Dark instead of creating a new IP. Terrible.

@angrycreep: I am not shitting on Perfect Dark. If MS wants to revive the franchise, there is nothing wrong with that. However, I had high hopes for The Initiative and having them work on Perfect Dark is a waste. A lot of studios could make a Perfect Dark game. To assemble that kind of talent under a new studio and have them work on an established IP is just silly. They had an opportunity to create something new and special.

How did you come to that conclusion? It is remade by the original studio. It is not a new studio starting fresh like The Initiative. What is the studio's initiative now anyway? To remake other people's games? That is pretty sad and probably not what a lot of the developers signed on for.

@BassMan: So if this reboot was by Rare it wouldn't be "terrible" as you say? God of War was reimagined into a different kind of game. It wasn't a hack and slash anymore. I am very interested to see the people they have (from Naughty Dog , Rockstar and lead by David Gallagher) reimagine a spy game in the Perfect Dark universe. The developers are probably very happy, they get to do whatever they want to Perfect Dark. It hasnt been great since the N64 , MS isnt going to tell them what they can and cant do to this franchise.

@keiser69: Yes, my issue is with The Initiative working on Perfect Dark and not that MS has chosen to remake/reboot Perfect Dark. MS needs more new IPs and The Initiative was an opportunity for them to bring in top talent and make something new. Now we are just getting more of the same or a different spin on it. This is very disappointing.

@BassMan: More of the same ? There hasn't been a Perfect Dark game in 15 years. How is this more of the same ?

@keiser69: 15 years ago or not, it is an existing IP and it is similar to other games. I would prefer this studio work on something new and fresh. Create a new world that we can get immersed in.

@BassMan: You obviously not a fan but this is a real good beloved franchise that people love. Why try something new when you already have material in your hands to work on something. They gonna have plenty for time to do a new IP later on but right now we want Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark isn't a strong IP. It just did well back in the day because there wasn't very many good FPS games on console. I would much rather this group of developers create a new IP and give Perfect Dark to another studio.

Perfect Dark, now I see the light! However, my ears ring from the fluffy talk from numerous other game devs...only to be utterly disappointed. Let me guess...it just works?

Of course I don't want to be disappointed!
