New Ghost Recon Game Breakpoint Leaks Ahead Of Reveal Event [Update]

Though for a Ubisoft game, this isn't much of a surprise.

As what can only be called tradition at this point, one of Ubisoft's next games has leaked. Called Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, the game is a direct sequel to Ghost Recon: Wildlands and is scheduled to release on October 4 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. [Update: The May 9 reveal event has brought confirmation of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, which does indeed launch later this year.]

According to post on Reset Era, the leak came from a retail listing which was shared in a since-removed post in the Ghost Recon subreddit. Breakpoint will feature Major Cole D. Walker, a character both voiced and stylized after actor Jonathan Bernthal, as the game's villain. Cole is the focus of the new story content that went live in Wildlands as part of Operation Oracle.

Breakpoint will be a "story-driven four-player experience," which is a very similar description to 2017's Wildlands. Cole has gone rogue, seemingly killing Holt, Midas, and (possibly) Weaver, and he's got an army of weaponized drones at his disposal.

The retail listing is specifically for the Wolves Collector's Edition of the upcoming Ghost Recon game. The edition comes with the game, a map, artwork, a Year 1 Pass, the Ultimate Pack (which contains extra missions, vehicles, and cosmetics), three day early access, and a statue of Cole--now disguised with a hooded cloak and mask.

Ubisoft has already announced a world premiere event in concern for a new Ghost Recon game. Scheduled for May 9 at 11:30 AM PT / 2:30 PM ET (you can watch it here), the event is most likely going to be the official reveal of Breakpoint, as well as confirmation for the information revealed in the leak. The leak implies the event will showcase alpha footage of Breakpoint's gameplay, including traversing a jungle, mud mechanics, and clearing an outpost.

In our Ghost Recon: Wildlands review, Miguel Concepcion wrote, "As only the second open world game in the Clancyverse, Ghost Recon: Wildlands is a middlingly safe tactical shooter and a slightly wasted opportunity given the ambitious scope of its seemingly boundless map. While its main strength is its mission diversity, it doesn't take long to lose the motivation after reaching El Sueno's doorstep. Even with a foursome of highly trained friends, Wildlands eventually reveals its diminishing returns. The feeling of positive immediacy and dopamine hits begin to wane sooner than you expected from a game with such a large and diverse world."

Ubi need to take the GR and R6 games back to their Roots, as all i see is the same 3rd person cover/shooter experience nowadays.

GR wildlands, The Division, they're all the same to me, albeit in different enviroments.

Ughh... i miss R6 Vegas :( that 1st Person/3rd Person cover system completely revolutionised the generic FPS in my eyes, and made for some tense moments and great MP experiences (you can see them, but they cant see you).

@playstationzone: You know, you can't just use Google Translate and think you know English. Ironically though, I copied your statement into Google Translate and translated it to Russian and then from Russian back to English and it makes more sense than what you wrote. (Not perfect, but still a fun exercise lol... looking forward to translating your next post.)

In truth, 4 players or 2 players did not work in the previous game, because when players joined it was ubiquitous and you could not tell them that you want them back, so it’s better to play alone or with a friend. This game will be the same game again and again.

@xiricon: I don't think they're using translate though, Google Translate is quite good these days, and I doubt that it would have such significant errors. It could just be that they are a beginner.

@n0on3: the joke loses its impact if I need to state that it is one.

@xiricon: mocking someone for their inability to speak a language isn't very funny, though the translate was pretty cool

@n0on3: He/she shouldn’t be a beginner at this point. This dude has been posting almost unreadable stuff for over a year.

@justthetip: A year isn't that much, ever tried actually learning another language? Even language courses that run for two years expect you to make plenty of idiom and grammatical mistakes, especially in complex sentences

He goes by Jon Bernthal.

Is this Mike Mahardy who did the video?

You are easily one of my favorite journalists on Gamespot.

Smart and articulate. All of your articles and videos are awesome and I enjoy them.

Thanks for the video!

i hope they will do it right this time. Wild lands has a huge potential but repetitive grinding missions and poor story killed it for me.

I wonder who would be hyped for this.

Wildlands wasn't even a tactical shooter, it was just another generic open-world action game.

@gunnyninja: Needing to be level 10 to throw a flashbang isn't tactical. It's mindless grind.

@uninspiredcup: That has nothing to do with being tactical or not. The game is making you earn something that makes life easier. Doesn't every level based game do that? I would love to start the game with a 50 cal. HTI rifle. Doesn't work that way...

As opposed to having the player make a choice from a wild selection of items with no unlocks pre-mission, like the original.

i.e. tactics

As opposed to mindless grind-walls. Which are decidedly, not.

@uninspiredcup: I don't think tactics mean what you think it means. Having to unlock things I want has been part of gaming since I started. At least they aren't making you pay for them. Real tactics mean you make do with what you have available, not what you WISH you had. That's why there are challenges that prohibit use of certain weapons. You know, that kind of stuff happens in the real world. If you get trapped in a gunfight without access to ammo, it's probably not a good idea to just spray and pray. You might pick off one at a time with single shots. I have used different tactics to beat the same mission different ways. If you are not enjoying the game, I feel for you. It's easily one of my favorites. I have played through at least 3 times, so I am clamoring for a new one. Hopefully with more endgame content like The Division 2 has included.

Nice working "gaming" and not "Ghost Recon".

There is no tactics. You grind to unlock "thing", it's the equivalent of doing menial labor and earning £5 an hour.

Everything, and anything the player does it rewarded to create a gameplay loop, a very insidious one that are in "games", namely "MMOs" that turn players into zombies. This model was transplant over with microtransacations applied. It also pads the game out with low quality content.

It's also not realistic, the thing that helped set R6/Reocn as genre defining games alongside the likes of Swat.

It's an open-world action game masquerading as one. And not even a good one that.

@uninspiredcup: Like I said, I feel for you. You really don't seem to understand what "tactics" mean. Tactics is more about how, not what...Maybe you like linear games that tell you which way to go and what order to do missions. I said gaming because it covers a lot more than just saying Ghost Recon. I own most of the Tom Clancy titles and those early Sierra games from Police Quest on up. You seem to be stuck on tactics being connected to gear. I disagree. The Division has a DLC where you start with only a pistol and one magazine. You have to find the rest. Tactics are all that save you, not what you have. Hey, if you don't like it, I can't make that happen. I find it is an EXTREMELY tactical game with choices in how I implement those tactics. Much more so than a game in which everything is scripted out for me like the earlier Ghost Recon games. It is not necessary for you to agree with this. You have a far different viewpoint than I do, which is ok by me.
