New Batman: Arkham Knight details, no multiplayer, and getting the best out of Xbox One/PS4

Huge city! Fast car! Kevin Conroy! Rocksteady reveals new info about Batman: Arkham Knight for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Batman: Arkham Knight will take place one year after the events of Arkham City, developer Rocksteady has confirmed, along with a slew of other information about the game's drivable batmobile, increased city size, and combat mechanics.

Rocksteady spilled the beans in Game Informer's April 2014 issue, talking about how Gotham City's open world will be five times the size of the one in Arkham City. Streets will also be wider to accommodate for the drivable batmobile. The batmobile! It's described as an "unstoppable force" by game director and studio co-founder Sefton Hill, one that players can summon with the press of a button--only to have it arrive at high speeds, smashing through any nearby vehicles, traffic posts, or even the corners of buildings.

Batman can also eject himself out of the car at a moment's notice, flinging our hero out of his vehicle and up into the sky, where he can maintain his momentum by gliding and grappling. The Dark Knight has also been spruced up a bit in combat, including new moves and takedowns, although Rocksteady says the simplicity of the brawling is one of the game's signatures. Rocksteady should know: Batman's counter-focused gameplay has been borrowed by plenty of other titles since its release.

No Caption Provided

Batman: Arkham Knight will also feature a new villain built specifically for the game, and described as a "formidable" foe. A silhouette of the new antagonist shows that his outline makes him look quite similar to Batman--what are the chances that it could be Hush, who popped up briefly (and teasingly) at the end of one of the side quests in Arkham City? Scarecrow also features, having cooked up a new batch of fear toxin and planting it in bombs around the city.

Fans will also be delighted to know that Kevin Conroy will reprise the role of Batman, having been replaced in Arkham Origins by Roger Craig Smith. Conroy is, if you ask me, the definitive voice of Batman--his smooth-but-grizzled chatter trounces all over Bale's comedy snarl.

Hill also confirmed that the game won't feature a multiplayer mode, unlike last year's Batman: Arkham Origins.

"We don't have the time to do multiplayer," he said. "We want to focus on making the best single-player experience we can. We don't feel that it needs a multiplayer element."

Publisher Warner Bros. is said to have "backed up" Rocksteady's decision on multiplayer from the start of the project.

Hill also spoke about creating a game exclusively for the new consoles (and PC). "It's not a challenge moving to next-gen," he said, "the real challenge is making sure you're getting the best out of the machines."

"You see a lot of games that are cross-gen and they feel a bit reined in because of that."

The GameSpot team also scrubbed through the game's debut trailer to see what info was buried within.

Batman: Arkham Knight is due to be released for the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 sometime in 2014, with US retailer GameStop pegging the date for October 14.

As much as i'm looking forward to the game and as much as i respect Kevin Conroy as the voice actor for Batman, Bale's Batman voice wasn't a comedy snarl. As the writer of the article, you aren't supposed to sound disrespectful.

<< LINK REMOVED >> His batman voice was laughable though. Conroy's however is how batman's voice should be. Writers make snarky remarks towards things all the time. I believe it's perfectly acceptable. He didn't say Bale's acting was a joke. he only mentioned the voice, which is something most people have said many times before, so technically the writer is somehow just quoting.

Finally a drivable vehicle for transportation instead of fake spidey web swinging so thats pretty good so far pals. I just have a gripe with the style of batmobile they chose. The 90s batmobile would have been much better in terms of style and looks especially since KC is voicing batman. I like everything else I am reading and seeing except for the car so I hope there will be options or dlc of different batsuits ans batmobile models.

I just want the Joker to stay dead, at least for this game. He was starting to become the equivalent of Lex Luthor in all the live-action Superman movies. It doesn't always have to come back to him.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Agree. Batman defeated him three times already in the Arkham games and having him around for the fourth time would just seem ridiculous. Enough is enough.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how developers are shying away from tacking on multiplayer and stupid achievements/trophies associated with it. There's more than a few great SP games coming out that are multiplayer-free and that's a breath of fresh air. I personally think it's because we're in the first generation of software development for the new consoles and they're spending their time learning the programming for the best experience they can focus. As things get easier, I'm sure we'll see MP being tacked on to great SP games. I can't stand MP modes on games that should be SP-only - Tomb Raider anyone? And the associated achievements/trophies are just stupid...who's going to play TR MP until level 60 other than trophy/achievement whores? I haven't the time to waste on such a piece-of-trash-tacked-on MP. If developers are going to add it, leave out the achievements and trophies.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Now if developers would only stop filling open world games with loads and loads of collectible items, like each arkham game with their riddler collectibles, these games would be even more enjoyable. It really adds less to the game than developers think, yes you have to play the game longer. But playing a game should be entertaining and not become a chore.

Just for this reason alone I hope the riddler isn't in arkham knight.

So I gotta ask why no Wii U version? I mean if this game is truly a next-gen exclusive why not the Wii U as well as PS4 CB1 and PC.

<< LINK REMOVED >> wii u doesn't have the horse power to compete with the PS4 or Xbone when it comes to multiplats so a lot of third party devs are just going to skip out on it. Unless the wii u sells like 10 million in the next 10 months third party devs will treat it just like the original wii. In fact it's basically in the same boat as the original wii. A little bit stronger than the older consoles but no where near as strong as the newer ones.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Because the console's sales numbers aren't worth the investment and because Rocksteady clearly wants to move on to more powerful equipment. While the Wii U is capable of having superior graphics to the PS3 and 360, the differences are relatively small, especially for a console that came out seven years later, and chances are that the Wii U simply doesn't have the specs to do all the things that Rocksteady envisioned for this sequel. Instead of watering down the experience they chose to cast out the consoles that didn't make the cut and I'm sure the game will be much better for it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It all depends on sales figures for a console and if it flops every publisher will walk away from it and also its specifications are kindda dated compared to next-gen. The last one may not be the main issue but its an issue none the less.

Rockesteady making another Batman game = incredibly good news. Rocksteady realising single-player is the most important part and them not making a multi-player at all = Litchie loves Rocksteady.

<< LINK REMOVED >> They didn't make the last broken game so I'm pretty sure it won't be an issue. I'm betting even if there are bugs Rocksteady won't shrug them off and refuse to fix them the way WB Games Montreal did. That was some bullshit.

"You see a lot of games that are cross-gen and they feel a bit reined in because of that."

Been saying that from the start, its not next gen if its cross gen. Because you are restricted to the old gen limitations, you can go all out. 'ie Titan Fall and COD and BF'.

and Kenin is back :-)

Considering how weak the current consoles are, developers need to start developing for pc, and THEN port them to consoles, like the old days.

Let's just hope they properly iron out the bugs this time BEFORE release and FIX whatever significant ones do crop up afterwards. Seems like everyone has already forgotten about the game breaking bugs that were blatantly ignored in the previous games. Get the fundamentals down first before adding new features.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Dr. Kill09 doesn't take into account the games that won't be coming to PC over the course of this generation, only the performance of the machine. It's about the games not the graphics or specs. The sheer number of crazed Nintendo fans that still exist should tell you that, and if the games that ritsukoblue wants to play lie primarily on the XB1 then it would be foolish to get a gaming PC when his/her interests lie elsewhere.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Multiplayer has been pigeonholed into the arena-style format that is all over the place now. It had potential though. Things like Demon's and Dark Souls were on the edge of exploring that potential but it would have been great if lots of developers followed suit. Imagine this: Batman: Arkham Knight's main campaign where you can choose to bond your game world with that of another friend or gamer, someone that you really trust or who's gaming abilities you have nothing but respect for and that you know will see the game through to the end. One of you play as Batman, the other as Robin, Nightwing, Catwoman, or Batgirl but any progress that either person makes is reflected in your shared world. Certain missions and fights belong to one character or the other and these events affect the outcome of others. Then you have your missions and fights that both need to be present for. Could be an area that takes two people to tackle (Robin hacks security while Batman progresses) or a fight with a superhuman that takes teamwork to bring down. Your game progress would be tied to each other, hence your need to pick someone that you can depend on to not only hold their own but push through to the end.

Of course the problem with this is that the time it would take to implement and perfect along with designing a solo gameplay experience for those that want to go it alone would be tremendous but the possibilities for a game like Arkham Knight to create a more intimate multiplayer main campaign gaming experience between two people would be endless. Besides, who wouldn't want to split up chasing down all those damn Riddler trophies and puzzles with someone else? ;-)

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Agreed. The only game I play online is Gotham City Impostors Free To Play. The reason it's so damn good is because they focused on one thing.

Even when there were good multiplayer portions in games, like Max Payne 3, Saints Row 2, Skate 3, or Uncharted 2, nobody was ever online... they were too busy playing COD 16 or whatever.

In most cases though, online sucks, and is just something the developers think they need to tack on, such as GTA V's online. It's awful.
