Netflix's Horizon Live-Action Series Reportedly Not Moving Forward

The Netflix adaptation of Sony's Horizon video games may not be happening anymore.

In 2022, Netflix and Sony set up a series adaptation of the Horizon video games from The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman. But in the wake of workplace misconduct allegations against Blackman for his conduct on The Umbrella Academy, Horizon may no longer be happening at Netflix.

Rolling Stone, the outlet that broke the story about Blackman's alleged misconduct, is reporting that Horizon and Blackman's other upcoming sci-fi series, Orbital, are "no longer moving forward." The report doesn't specify whether the shows will continue without Blackman or if both projects are dead in the water.

One of Blackman's representatives responded to the report by noting that the showrunner "has a long, ongoing, and close working relationship with Netflix [and] continues to work on new projects." Blackman's representative also noted that he and Netflix had "signed a new multi-year deal earlier this year."

However, it's unclear if Netflix will maintain its relationship with Blackman following the report of retaliatory and discriminatory conduct during his four seasons as showrunner of The Umbrella Academy. Many of the accusations against Blackman were made anonymously because of fear of professional reprisal. But The Umbrella Academy Season 4 co-showrunner Jesse McKeown did go on the record about Blackman's conduct.

"I always sort of carried that around thinking, 'OK, that was clear retaliation, [but] he would never do that to me,'" recalled McKeown. "It happened to me eventually, and a whole bunch of other people in between."

Since Sony owns Horizon, it could conceivably take the series adaptation to another streamer if Netflix has passed on it. But for now, we don't know whether that project still factors into Sony's future live-action plans.

Would netflix had made alloy gay before or after she found her focus for the first time.

If karen gillan would been on her 20s she coulda pulled the best alloy. She was so great as amy pond.

@s1taz4a3l: Setting aside all the bigotry this topic seems to have (predictably) triggered, I'm not sure anyone could pull off a good Aloy. The series is great for lots of things, but character development hasn't really been one of them. Her character suffices as a protagonist, but suffices is about it...gets the job done. There's a couple of NPCs that are decent as well, but they are also mostly cardboard cutouts.

Frankly, in terms of character development, Aloy reminds me of Geralt of Rivia...particularly once we're in the second game and there's no supporting childhood section of the game to give her character more depth. Both she and Geralt have only the barest of personalities and are very shallow and one-note.

@ironhorse89: Perhaps you should stop throwing around the actual bigotry then, eh?

And you wishing it has lost all impact doesn't make it so, particularly in light of your insistence on proving it accurate.

I'm not shocked at all. The Horizon franchise has a face only a Sony fanboy could like, and the storyline is absolutely abysmal. There aren't enough characters, and the enemies are about as interesting as sitting on a tack.

Wait, Netflix was planning a Horizon show? The only good part about the Horizon game series is the combat and Dinobots. The world and characters are all meh besides Aloy herself but even now, she's a chatterbox and that's annoying in Forbidden West.

But in another way, I would have been fine if this was a prequel show leading up to Humanity's downfall to the virus, and knowing more of Ted Faros & Dr. Elisabet Sobeck's backstory for a Netflix prequel would have been cool IMO.

No good would have come from the show.

I'm a huge fan of the games, but I had no interest in a show.

@itsnota2mer: Yup. No way it wouldn't be a CGI cheesefest.
