Netflix Responds To Microsoft's Planned Acquisition Of Activision Blizzard, Teases "Absolute Best" Service

"I think to some degree, it's an endorsement of the core thesis that we have around subscription being a great model to connect consumers around the world with games and game experiences."

Executives from Netflix have responded to Microsoft's recent announcement of a proposed buyout of Activision Blizzard, saying Microsoft's move is an endorsement that subscription-based models are powerful. Microsoft, of course, has Game Pass, which now has 25 million subscribers and is poised to grow much bigger still in the years ahead, presumably.

"It was exciting to see the activity in the space," Netflix COO and chief product officer Greg Peters said during the company's latest earnings briefing. "And I think to some degree, it's an endorsement of the core thesis that we have around subscription being a great model to connect consumers around the world with games and game experiences."

Netflix is currently involved in the mobile game space, and Peters said fans can expect to see Netflix do more in this space when it comes to licensing. "We're open to licensing, accessing large game IP that people will recognize. And I think you'll see some of that happen over the year to come," Peters said.

In its earnings release, Netflix said fans can expect the company to release more games in the "casual and core gaming genres" in 2022 as the company build out a portfolio of games that subscribers like the best.

Peters went on to tease that Netflix will look to make "interactive experiences" instead of just licensed games. "But we also see back to test like building out a whole cloth and the ability to take the franchises or the big titles, let's call it, that we are excited about and actually develop interactive experiences that are connected to those. We see a huge long-term multiyear opportunity in that, too," Peters said.

"We're going to be experimental and try a bunch of things. But I would say the eyes that we have on the long-term prize really center more around our ability to create properties that are connected to the universes, the characters, the stories that we're building in other places and sort of magnify that value for the fans of those stories."

Reed Hastings, the founder of Netflix, said on the call that the company is experimenting with the games space right now. "We're definitely crawl, walk, run and like let's nail the thing and not just be in it for the sake of being in it or for a press release, but we got to please our members by having the absolute best in the category," he said.

Peters reminded everyone that it's "still very early days" in terms of what Netflix is trying to achieve with games. The early results from Netflix Games have been positive--Peters mentioned "a growing number of monthly users, daily active users..." But the wider goal is to go much bigger, which is part of the reason why Netflix acquired Oxenfree studio Night School.

"But really, as we're doing this, we've been building in parallel what I'm super excited about it which is the sort of internal development capacity, our own game studio. We've been hiring some incredible talent that brings a set of experience to this process," Peters said.

In other news, Netflix just announced plans to make a new Wallace & Gromit movie and a sequel to Chicken Run featuring the voice of The Last of Us' Bella Ramsey.

As i said before.. Microsoft's true competition is Tencent, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google.

While Nintendo and Sony worry about who can sell more plastic boxes, Microsoft is focused on the reality of today's gaming business which is who can own and offer the most content everywhere not just on consoles.

Microsoft is best positioned out of all the companies vying for our gaming attention imo. They pretty much already have things in place. They have their subscription and they have their cloud streaming tech in place. All they need to do is add more and more better and better games/content and to keep improving Xbox Cloud Gaming. Keep trying to cut down the latency more and more with the end goal having it perform just as good as if you had a console under your tv.

Once Microsoft get their Cloud tech to the point where it’s just as good as if you were playing on local hardware then it should really take off and explode towards that 2 billion gamers mark. And they kinda have a head start right now.

I miss the days of digging through a bargain bin at a software store to buy a video game on 3.5" floppy disks....

...then editing your autoexec.bat and config.sys files to make them run properly...

...then installing them multiple times until the game runs properly...

...then using the strange decoder wheel thing to pass the copyright security to play the game...

ahhhhh nostalgia

@cj_topspin: I still have mine but most I can't even access on a modern system and I asm sorry I am old school that loved Windows 3.11 or Doe 6.2 back in the day and I enjoyed experimenting with them. But in some ways Windows made some lazy by trying to all the work. I do like experimenting with the Regiedit but that can lead to disaster if one screw up unlike with Windows 3.11 or DOS all you do is back up the important files and if you screw up you can restore them. I haven't done that method with modern window yet but I do have an little understanding on how it works.

Gamepass complete every game to 100% for free, or 70% and move on, hammer as many categories.

Well, I am a completionist so a single game lasts several weeks (if not months) and I only buy on sales, therefore, I get better value buying games than having a subscription.

@hjroman: I use both GP for various reasons and what you do may work for you, but for me one disadvantage in buying a game is the return policy especially on digital games in which majority of digital games that are brought are not refundable let alone transferable. So, if you buy a digital game that was hyped to be the best and it turns out it is the worst you are stuck with it and no money back. However, if that same game is on GP you get to play the whole game and therefore, I will know if it is a buy or no buy. People use GP for various reasons, another benefit for using GP if you do wish to buy the game you get 20% on core games and 10% on DLC once those games are eligible to buy at discount. But like you said you get an better value in doing what you do but others find value in having GP. It is expensive I will admit if one does it yearly, but they have multiple plans.

@xnshd: I think it’s more than that.

I’m the same with him. I usually buy a game and then sell it so it’s between $5-$15 total in cost after shipping.

In 2021 I platinum’d Spider-man remastered (free), Miles Morales ($10), Returnal ($70), Destiny 2 ($30), Ratchet ($8), Scarlet Nexus ($12), A plague Tale (free), Tales of Arise ($5), Death Stranding DC ($25), Deathloop ($8), Guardians of the Galaxy ($10), Mass Effect LE 1 & 2 [on 3 atm] ($30). I sell games as soon as I finish them.

I purchased Returnal digital at full price to support the studio, same as Ghost and FF VII Remake. Next two I’ll buy are both digital; Elden Ring and Horizon to support the studios day 1 (not available on GP).

But the thing I want to point out is that unlike

Netflix - where you could be ‘watching’ while scrolling through your phone or sitting on the edge of your seat - it’s still roughy the same time spent…. but the time invested and consumed with games are wildly fluctuating. Not only that, a Netflix account is used by the house - GamePass isn’t shared so much.

The fact that people pay to consume and not invest is a scary precedent for people like me.

@xnshd: of course, we know they ‘Time to beat’ listed the top 5 games left unfinished by their tracking were all on GamePass.

I guess my question is that outside of multiplayer games, isn’t it going to be harder for studios to pacify attention targets or whatever measure with most gamers not finishing games? We know that doesn’t fair well with Netflix. Is there a possibility that some IP may be put to rest without the quantifiable sales statistics?

@hjroman: Same here. It's the reason I won't play Halo Infinite until there's a sale. As much as I'd excited to check it out, $90 for a campaign is too rich for me.

Yeah.... Okay Netflix...

Please - how big of hit did your stock take today? Netflix is losing customers and jacking the subscription price at the same time. My premium is going up to $20, which is insane when you compare it to the prices of all the other streaming services out their. The content doesn't warrant the price, especially when you consider the alternatives, and the fact that they cancel anything decent within two or three seasons. Screw gaming on the platform, I'm at the point of being ready to cancel altogether.

"subscription being a great model to connect consumers"

Why own it when you can just pay to borrow it forever. Someday, you won't be able to buy a house or car. You'll only be able to rent it. Who needs equity, anyway?

@mursexxx: As a guy who has gone to many real estate agents. That won't even listen to him on getting a house with a mortgage. But didn't mind offering me deals on apartments that cost the same or more than that said house's mortgage a month.

I would rather all these subscription/rental companies go completely under. And for everyone involved to get completely bankrupt. Then getting to the point of damn near no ownership of anything.

@nintendians: i really dont understand that argument anymore if you buy cyberpunk, avengers, anthem, gta trilogy or bf2042 on a physical disc, the only thing that disc has is day 1 version of a completely broken 4/10 game at max. i would never buy those games on a console thats not connected to the internet.

i understand theres some collectibility in the cases and covers but at this point just burning the steam version on a blu ray and printing your own custom covers is about the same. ofc on console not annoption. i dont see what is the reason to collect 4/10 games. id kinda be ashamed to tell yeah i got cyberpunk, although deleting all patches and starting the game could be a cool prank

@ghostspartan:well own it digital could back fired on those go digital, because any online game store could just remove the game from their store and you'll felt that you rip off, not able to play your game, even it was a buggy and glitchy mess from day 1.

the only i see it to keep all of those and updated in tact is to download either a gog or pirated version of the game with no online play/features, it'll be nice if those online game store decide to give you an option to buy and download the digital and all it's updates, so you can have the game they already removed from their server and still play the campaign and offline multiplayer.

@ghostspartan: I agree but to expand on physical media, you will still need to connect on most of the games to finish the install meaning if the dev is under you can't finish the install unless they make an, patch and one must pray, and that disc than becomes an coaster. Do not get me wrong I love physical media too, but it is not a burning issue to have one

They're just building out their own game studio... As in 1? They have a long way to go. Google is having a tough time with Stadia. Looks like Netflix will be in the"crawl" phase for a while, lol.

Netflix can barely resist cancelling a TV show within 5 minutes of release but they are going to jump into core gaming?

They are the new Google, and I think we'll see failure here unless it's strictly for casual gaming.

@sabredj: That pisses me off so much. You get invested in a series and they cancel it after 2 seasons. But yet they don't let people view everything and just show you what THEY think you'll like.

Their UI model is horrendous. Unless you specifically know of a good show, chances are it's gonna take people a while to come across it.

@lonesamurai00: I agree but GOG and Steam is not available on consoles and GP try before a refund is much longer than Steam let alone most games on GP you can play as long as you have an subscription w/o paying so need for a refund. GP has it advantages and disadvantages but for it is how you use it and I use it well. I love Steam for its sales as well as GOG being I can play some of the oldies but goodies and there is no DRM.

@lonewolf1044: Well Game Pass is great IF YOU ARE A CONSOLE GAMER. The total downside to Game Pass on the PC is that it makes it feel as though you are playing those games on a console. Their is zero file access (which makes PC Gaming fun). No real way of fixing potential problems or issues that can arise which is another great thing about the PC. You can't move games files to other locations.

All of these things and more can be done when buying games everywhere else on the PC, but not with Game Pass. It's way too restrictive a service for me, plus nothing can beat using Steam and GOG Galaxy.

Microsoft as a games company still doesn't know what to do in the PC Gaming space, so they should just leave it to those who know.

@lonesamurai00: Yes, there are some flaws in GP on PC and I agree with you on that. but as said Steam has a limited return policy and GOG also. and I use all three. Being I am an GP subscriber I have access to console and PC. I can install to any drive I wish on the PC like you can do with Steam and Steam has some limitations as well where you can install a game. The only storefront that has the best options for the customer is GOG which I go to first and buy my games as I can install any game on any system I wish as GOG gives you the Windows installer and install all my games without using GOG. I mainly use GP on console and not PC as I mainly use Steam and GOG and the only time, I do DL a game on GP is to play as again Steam has a limited refund system that does not work for me. GP may not work for some, and it may work for some it is how you use it and for what purpose.

@lonewolf1044: Game Pass is wonderful for a console gamer, or a PC Gamer who doesn't mind playing his games as if he were playing them on a console. Meanwhile Steam and CD Projekt Red made the PC Gaming platform what it is today, not Microsoft.

Microsoft has had decades to have success on the PC platform and still in 2022, they still are fumbling the ball decades later.

I said it before, and I'll say it again...

Microsoft as a games company still doesn't know what to do in the PC Gaming space, so they should just leave it to those who know - Valve, CD and Projekt Red.

Game Pass is great, I don't deny that, but mostly for console users, or PC any users who like the subscription model without the things that make PC Gaming so great, and unique.

@lonesamurai00: Yes, but not everyone sees it your way and have their own ideas on who made PC gaming platform it is today, and steam or CD Projekt was unheard of back in the day and it was the early companies that started it. I agree MS fumbled with the Windows for gamers platform but that is not what making them billions per year for they would not be in the position they are in today. MS provided all the tools to every company since the beginning. MS does screw up there is no denying that and you can dislike, hate them but it does not change anything as GP is here to stay and it has proven success for them and also it is about choices one wants to make. If you do not like GP for PC, you do have the choice as you did by not indulging in it and stick with whatever works for you as others are choosing what works for them.

@lonewolf1044: Well.... duh? Of course everyone has their own choice, but if we couldn't talk about those reasons on a site like this then the forums on this site, and every other site wouldn't exist.

The fact is that Microsoft has had decades to get this thing right and they are still floundering with both the Windows Store for PC Gaming, and now with Game Pass for PC. All of this has been written up on sites like PC Gamer, PCGamesN and other sites.

You seem to think that this is just me, or that I hate Microsoft but the fact it that Microsoft is one of the few companies that I have always had a soft spot for, but we all know why they started turning towards the PC platform, because it finally became respected, and profitable overall and they didn't want to miss out, same as Epic with their new store entry, but it was Valve and CD Projekt Red who laid the ground work for profitability over the years, not Microsoft, not Epic Games, and certainly not Tencent.

I have been PC Gaming since the 80's and 90's and PC Gaming has always been the greatest platform for playing games, but it wasn't profitable. Companies looked at the platform as a thieves den, not understanding that it wasn't everybody torrenting, and stealing their work.

Gabe saw where Microsoft was heading with regards to PC Gaming and that is why he left to make something new and different. Microsoft was committed console gaming because they assumed that PC Gaming was going to die off just like so many others. This is why Microsoft has floundered even today on the platform because since 2001 to 2015 (fifteen years) they were fully focused on one platform - Xbox.

Alright, know they've had a change of heart. They've added Windows to the Xbox family, and even still today (seven years later) - they can't get it right on the PC.

You think that I hate Microsoft, or that it's just me griping, but I can produce articles from reputable sites to prove my point about their floundering.

Valve built this platform and made it profitable to developers, and CD Projekt Red has furthered Valve's cause by making it even better.

@mursexxx: I agree with you on that but as with everything else it was bound to happen. The thing is one must know their limits on what they subscribe to, and when there is an economic crisis and I hear this time and time again Subs are expendable as it is not a need to live. But businesses are always trying to find new Aves of income and they are not wrong but again consumers can choose or not indulge. Aside from subbing almost everything is going digital and some feel that is we are digitized to death.

at this point there still are options to buy cds (also digital cds), food, furnitures etc without subscription. i get worried when all shops notice majoeity of customers use subscription service and they decide to end their actual stores.

@tbird7586: I agree GP is an excellent deal for me as I use it for different reasons. Some use it to demo the games and what is good about that it is not a demo in which you get to play a small portion of the game, you get to play the whole game and if you like it, you can see if you are interested and not spend money to find out it is a dud and lose that money. Now some think if you play the game, you may not even buy it and that is true that happens, but some will still buy the game especially if it has DLC they might want to add on also you get the game at discount during and after the game comes off GP. I use it to demo games and it works for me. But you can't please everyone some like it and some don't. I do not buy GP for a whole year as that is very expensive and buy 3 months at a time which is manageable for me

@tbird7586: Funny part is that you don't realize the same exact thing will happen with GP. It happens to EVERYTHING. Nothing is immune. You're not going to experience good times forever. When the business takes over once they have their userbase, all bets are off.
