Naughty Dog Teases Future: "Single-Player Experiences Are Near And Dear To Us"

Executives from Naughty Dog tease what the studio might make next.

Naughty Dog is currently making its first-ever standalone multiplayer game, but what other projects might the studio make in the future? We don't know for sure just yet, but Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells said fans can look forward to the studio making new IP and also working on established franchises.

"I think the easy answer is: both. I think there's excitement to develop new IP, but there is still a ton of love for Uncharted and The Last of Us, and I think you'll see both kinds of projects from us in the future," Wells said in an interview with Game Informer.

Naughty Dog is known for its big, cinematic single-player story-focused games, and you can expect this to continue in the future.

"Single-player experiences are near and dear to us. It's what has attracted a lot of people to Naughty Dog, and that's what inspires them, so I think we're going to keep at it as long as we can," Wells said.

Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann is also quoted in the interview, saying Naughty Dog studio owner Sony has never come to the team with a mandate to make a certain type of game.

"There has never been a mandate like, 'Oh, this is where we see the winds shifting. Can you start making these kind of games instead?' We know just as they know that when you work on something you're excited by, something you're passionate by, you're going to do great work," he said.

One of Naughty Dog's first successful games was Jak and Daxter, and Wells said if the studio had "endless resources and time," it would be fun to return to making "lighter fare" games like that. "You look at what Insomniac is doing with Ratchet and Clank and it's exciting. It's great to see that stuff. We're just limited with time, you know, I'm 48 years-old and how many more games do you get to make, so you got to pick and choose," Wells said.

As for Druckmann, he said when Naughty Dog finishes a particular project, the team will spend "quite a bit of time" deciding what to do next and if it should make a new IP or dig back into its catalog for a sequel.

"We really take our time with it, and if you were to see our folders of concept art you'd see unused concepts that are all over the gamut," Druckmann said. "Then we look at everything and we ask ourselves what are we excited by? What's something that's going to challenge us and push us, and push the medium as far as games that can be? Because that inspiration is so important to carry through years of production."

Beyond the new Last of Us multiplayer game, Naughty Dog has no announced projects. Naughty Dog has already said it will not make more Uncharted games, but the studio is open to having a different developer come in to make Uncharted 5.

Last of Us is a beat down concept. It's been on gaming and TV for at least 25 years now. Entertaining, yes. But it's more of the same every time. Just this time, the girl is a lesbian. TLOU 3 will introduce gentle non-binary vegan zombies, just so that they can do something new.

I would rather not see another Uncharted game than see it F*cked by some developer that will just try to make a buck, or worse, will try to make it into some woke bullsh*t.

Look at Assassin's Creed. It started as this cool concept about finding something lost by accessing genetic memories. Then the cash poured in and now, the game barely has a story line. Everything that was cool about it has been diluted in 10 gallons of sh*t.

@dirtydyk: That's not very clever to say. Ellie being a "lesbian" is just characteristic, nothing more. It never has true weight in the narrative... But I have the feeling you already know that, but you probably like the word "woke" so much... So...

Well, TLOU & Unchartered had great multiplayer for my tastes, so hopefully with full emphasis on that we may get something very special that is more Socom/Warhawk, etc, than Fortnite, COD, etc.

A lot of butthurt entitled gamers on here commenting based on their hate for TLOU2 & it not being written to cater to their artistic vision (or autistic)....Relax....Even if you were a big enough douche to somehow think TLOU2 is soooooo bad....Lets just hypothetically say that ND screwed up TLOU2 royally & pretend it didn't smash it in sales, as well as GOTY awards....Then they made one boo boo & you need a Waaambulance....even though their track record is impeccable & they delivered critical & commercial hit after hit... I've seen too many brilliant developers die or be swallowed by publishers & delegated to absolute dross & nothingness due to this mentality & Free Radical comes to mind 1st.. Timesplitters were amazing games, but one Haze & a side order of Fuze later.

@arclight007: Joel got what he deserved. He was a bad guy who did bad things. Just because you like him doesn't make that any less true.

@i2eaper0f5ouls: 👉💯!

I'll never understand why people didn't see Joel for what he was, (a monster). Doesn't mean I loved what they did to him, but I found it impossible to feel sorry for him.

If anything, I felt bad for Ellie, (she wasn't the one who made the choice, Joel was). But once she turned into a homicidal murder bot, I lost the ability to feel sorry for her as well.

@thecupidstunts: Joel is not a monster he did what he had to do in order to survive and by your logic Abby is also a monster

@gamerforlife96: Joel is a monster, Abby is a monster, Ellie is a monster and almost everyone is a monster. Yet, they are trying to find their humanity, to find the light again. Joel achieved it thanks to ELlie, Abby achieved it thanks to Lev, and Ellie achieved it thanks to her inner strengh and Joel... Its awesome once you undertand everything.

@gamerforlife96: Did you play the first game? The choice that Joel made at the end had absolutely nothing at all to do with his own survival. He made a selfish choice that benefitted nobody but himself, (because of how heartbroken he was over losing his real daughter).

And yes, Abbey was a monster too. Joel, Ellie and Abbey were ALL monsters. You might like/dislike one more than others, but nothing changes the fact that they are all horrible people who did reprehensible things. If you objectively look at the actions of the main characters, there is no way you can possibly justify or excuse what they do.

My final takeaway from the game is that nobody wins when they are driven by revenge, and there is no redemption for those who only resort to violence. My friend thinks that Ellie was redeemed in the end because she spared Abbey. But Ellie wasn't ultimately redeemed, she was ultimately broken, (and any whiff of a "happy" ending would have rang hollow next to the insane amount of violence and cruelty committed by pretty much everyone in the game).

@thecupidstunts: "He made a selfish choice that benefitted nobody but himself"

Yes, the choice was selfish in a way, and a love act by the other side of the coin. For me, saving an innocent little child from being killed is always a good act no matter the consequences...

"My friend thinks that Ellie was redeemed in the end because she spared Abbey."

And your friends is (in my opinion) partially correct. Ellie is not redeemed, but she started a path of redemption. Same goes for Abby when she decided to save the kids.

And yes, I do agree that Ellie is empty, yet, she is now ready to live again, to move on with her life and to find some form of happiness... And that is, a very happy ending for me.

@blindbsnake: Just goes to show you how deep the story is, that people can have completely different takeaways in the end. 👍
