Mulan's Disney Plus Release Is Not Cheap, But This Is What You Get

Disney clarifies the $30 price point for Disney Plus and also confirms the movie will be available to all subscribers--eventually.

Disney recently announced that its next big movie, Mulan, will bypass movie theatres and premiere on Disney Plus for $30 USD. Some questions remained, however, and now Disney has provided some clarification regarding Mulan's digital release and its future on the platform.

A new landing page on Disney Plus spotted by Collider mentions that your $30 gets you "Premier Access" to Mulan. The movie will eventually be released for all Disney Plus subscribers, but people who pay for Premier Access will get to watch it first. Those who pay for it can watch Mulan as many times as they want and on any platform that supports Disney Plus. Unlike other rentals, there is no time limit at all, except you will lose access if you cancel your Disney Plus subscription.

Now Playing: Disney's Mulan - Official Trailer

The Premier Access version of Mulan will come with options for HDR, UHD, and Dolby Audio. The movie can also be downloaded for those who want to watch in an offline setting.

Disney did not provide any details on when Mulan may be available for Disney Plus subscribers who don't wish to pay $30 to watch it right away. The announcement of Premier Access also brings up questions about future Disney films following a similar path and releasing first on Disney Plus for a fee before becoming available to all subscribers.

For what it's worth, Disney's CEO Bob Chapek recently said the unique release strategy for Mulan is currently being considered a "one off" for the company. He said there are no plans to repeat this for any major upcoming Disney movie, including Black Widow, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 6. As usual, however, plans could change, especially if Mulan's home video release proves to be successful.

Chapek also clarified that Mulan will be shown in theaters in "select markets" on September 4, contingent upon safety regulations.

For more on Mulan's home video release strategy, check out this editorial from Mark Serrels at GameSpot sister site CNET, "Mulan for $30 on Disney Plus? Count me in."

This is the Google Stadia model for movies. Just buy a Blu-ray.

This is why I ditched consoles. I have no intention of subscribing to Disney +. If they want my money, they better start releasing more stuff on DVD and Blu-ray such as 90s cartoon series.

Disney+ itself is really great value.

But yea, haha, I wouldn't pay 2 quid for their live action remakes.

Disney would be losing money for this because the average movie ticket is about $15. You take a family of 4 that would go see a Disney movie that is like $60. Even at $30 and limiting it to Disney+ subs they probably will not make a profit on this a lot of their profits are theater sales.

Now people are saying $30 is a lot but its less than they would make at theaters.

For the first time in a while it seems almost all posters on this topic have the same viewpoint, something like screw Disney and it's mercenary garbage.

I just finished Ghost Of Tsushima so I got my fix of ancient Japanese culture for right now, plus it is almost surely a better experience. So if you have a PS4 do yourself a favor and spend a few more bucks on that.

@ddesroches: This is an olden Chinese tale, Roches. And neither it nor the game you mention take place in ancient times. 📕🐍

Will come out eventually for Disney+

$30 is like 4 months of Disney+

There is already a live action Mulan and it is probably more accurate than the Disney film.

Sooo let me get this straight....

For new subscribers interested in viewing Mulan, you need to:

1. Pay $6.99 per month for Disney+

2. Pay $30 for Mulan

Sounds a lot like Stadia to me and we all know where That's going. Besides, Mulan's not even that good.

Tieing it to a paid subscription is just stupid. Regardless, these premium digital rentals and purchases make no sense for someone living alone. It might be worth it for a family but why would I pay that much to rent a movie I can buy on Blu-ray a few months later for half the cost and own it forever? All it does is promote piracy.

This is a litmus test for overcharging. People need to send a message and not buy it.

I don't have much hope for my fellow Americans though. Not a good track record for critical thinking recently...

No one is paying even $20 for new releases on demand, let alone $30. It’s unrealistic and I hope it flops hard!

Supposedly 5 million people paid 20 bucks just to rent Trolls World Tour for 48 hours. That in and of itself is not enough to turn a profit because that's $100 million x .8 that Universal got to to keep (the rest going to the rental platforms themselves) against a $125 million combined production and marketing budget, but that is still lots of money on rentals.

I'm not interested in seeing this movie even for a 5-dollar matinee but I recognize that this could have millions of people paying 30 bucks and having three or four people watch Mulan on that account and have the person paying for the months-long access to the movie feel like they got their money's worth.

@GuillermoGage: I bet more than half the people who rented that didn't know it was only a rental and will never do it again.

30 dollars for a digital copy of a movie tied to a subscription that vanishes if you cancel it...I dunno, that seems a tad ridiculous to me. If it was 30 and you kept it available for streaming even if your sub lapsed, sure. But to tie it to the sub forever...no. That's too much.

@kumatenshi: It's the ultimate microtransaction. And what's sad is that some morons will pay for this, which will embolden companies to continue the practice. It worked for video games so why not subscription-based streaming services.
