Mortal Kombat 12 Confirmed, Releasing In 2023

NetherRealm's next entry in the fighting game franchise was officially announced as part of Warner Bros. Discovery's fourth quarter 2022 earning's call.

22 Comments

Mortal Kombat 12, long rumored but yet to be officially announced, has been confirmed in Warner Bros. Discovery's fourth quarter 2022 earnings call. It's set to release later this year.

David Zaslav, Warner Bros. Discovery's president and CEO, announced the game in a segment of the call discussing the company's games business. He stated that Mortal Kombat 12, along with Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, are both set to arrive later this year "with ambitious launch projections."

Zaslav stated that Warner Bros. Discovery's video game business was a key part of its strategy for the coming year and something that sets it apart from other competing media companies.

NetherRealm Studios, the developer behind Mortal Kombat, has yet to comment on the matter officially, but fans have long suspected that the next entry in the long-running fighting game franchise was around the corner. Despite it having been a number of years since NetherRealm's previous game, Mortal Kombat co-creator and NetherRealm chief creative officer Ed Boon has repeatedly let fans down easy on social media ahead of major game announcement presentations, and in October 2022 said the announcement of the studio's next project was "coming in due time."

Some fans believe NetherRealm producer Jonathan Andersen intentionally leaked Mortal Kombat 12's existence last year, when a since-deleted image of his work desk showed a file name on his monitor titled "MK12_Mast..." along with an email that read "Our fans eagerly scrape the internet." The previous game in the series, Mortal Kombat 11, released in 2019 and has sold over 12 million copies as of July 2021. Mortal Kombat as a franchise celebrated its 30th anniversary last year.

Was hoping for another Injustice but oh well. What a lame way to give a new game announcement.

Between this, SF6, Tekken 8, Dragon Ball FighterZ next gen upgrade, and Project L, fighting games are looking to have a promising future.

After MK9 they've just been making the combat
more and more needlessly complicated, seemingly just for the sake of it.
Sometimes in ways that are more luck-based than skill-based.
Infinitely more depth isn't necessarily what gamers want.

Coool 😎

Looking forward to this one. I am sure they have a really awesome cinematic trailer waiting for us for the proper reveal. Can't wait to see that in the near future...

Much anticipation for seeing the new fighter roster 🥷

@robbie23: I kinda wish they would make a full-on arpg like Deception's Konquest. For a fighting game, MK has dense lore and an interesting world. Would love the chance to explore around in it.

I’m certainly looking forward to it, but I’m also not looking forward to having to repurchase the same characters in DLC packs, yet again.

I'll admit I'm sad that we're not seeing another DC fighter, but I'm sure this is going to be an amazing title.

@YukoAsho: That would be a really hard game to sell at this point being that DC Comics are in a bit of trouble right now with all the stuff going on right now.

MK11 is easily one of my favorite fighting games of all time. Looking forward to seeing what they come up with next. You'd think by now they would run out of ideas for fatalities lol.

Nice to see fighting games on here. Fighting games are what got me into games. Don’t play them as much cause I’m not a competitive person, more into rpgs. Used go to the 7-11 or pizza places. Stopped playing fighting games cause win or lose people would get into real fights or say hateful words. Sometimes the cops had to be called. It frustrates me to see people try and turn fromsofts (the tank) rpgs into a pseudo competition.

@probable: developers could learn from fromsoft. Little delays, completed game, and no micros. I can't understand why you hate their games other than being bad at them.

@restatbonfire: I’m not a big fan of fromsoft games cause it’s mostly been the same game since 2009. Just different art style and a new name. Instead of telling someone they are bad at games, why don’t you give some actual pointers to how the game works. Gaming is the only place that doesn’t give all the information you need. You go to school they give all the information they have to help pass the class, same for sports and a job.

@restatbonfire:

MK10(got it for free via PS+) and MK11(got it for $5 via PStore sale) are both ok, but MK 1-3 are the golden years.

@PSP107: Have you played MK1-3 recently? I loved them as a kid, but they are hard to go back to now. Even the Deadly Alliance trilogy holds up better.

@judaspete: I recently played MK1.

MK10 and 11 are decent but I think the original trilogy is better.

I didn't play the PS2 era games.
