More Details On The Duke Nukem Movie Starring John Cena Revealed

"You know that having a misogynistic guy in today's world, how do you make that fun and loveable?"

A new Duke Nukem movie starring John Cena in the lead role is on the way, and now we've learned more about it. Producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller discussed the upcoming film in an interview with CinemaBlend. The Nukem character is brash, outspoken, and sexist.

Form admitted that it has been a struggle to come up with ideas for how to make the Duke Nukem movie "a really fun ride" despite the title character's tone.

"You know that having a misogynistic guy in today's world, how do you make that fun and loveable?" he said. "And at the same time he's got to be an incredible badass, so those are the things that we're struggling with and we're going to try and come out with what I hope is a really fun ride. That's the goal, is for it to be a really fun ride."

Form went on to say that they won't make the movie if the tone is off. He cited Deadpool as an example of a film with a brash leading character that got it right.

"How do you nail that tone in the way that Deadpool nailed the tone?" he said. "I think we have to do that and if we don't get the tone right then we're not going to make the movie."

It is still early days for the Duke Nukem movie. There is no script yet, Form confirmed. And it sounds like Cena is not 100 percent locked in for the role yet. "If he reads the script and he doesn't like the script I'm sure there's ways that he could pull out, but right now he's our guy," Form said.

You can read the full interview and story here at CinemaBlend.

The Duke Nukem video game series has been dormant since 2011's critically panned but million-selling Duke Nukem Forever. Gearbox Software, which owns the rights to the Duke Nukem series, confirmed in 2015 that it had done some concept work on a all new, "head-turning" Duke Nukem game. However, Gearbox might not make the new game.

"Make it a really fun ride despite the character's tone"? That doesn't sound very sound.

By casting into the role a pro wrestler no one over the age of 14 likes but are forced to like because the promotion he works for brainwashes children with merchandise to tell them who their heroes have to be instead of letting them decide for themselves which wrestlers deserve to be a star.

I've got a feeling this movie will never be made and that's okay. A film that doesn't know its audience is no film at all.

I'd love to see a Duke Nukem movie, but it's a REALLY challenging time to have a character like this in the U.S. right now. On the other hand, if they could do for sexual harassment awareness that Black Panther did for racism, it would work. Duke isn't misogynistic, he just really likes women.

I can see only good things coming from a Duke Nukem film in our current political climate.

What a bunch of nonsense.

What exactly makes Duke Nukem misogynist?

The fact that Duke Nukem is attracted to good looking girls

And the fact that they are attracted to him?

That makes him horny not misogynist.

Even Gamespot themselves made an article 7 years ago -

Reality Check: Duke Nukem Forever Isn't Sexist.

The problem with casting John Cena as the main character is that he'll be 55 years old when the movie comes out.

@MMX377: He's referencing the infamous development hell of Duke Nukem Forever applied to a Duke film.

What I like about Duke is everything is taken to xtremes - his ego, political incorectness, masculinity. He is not supposed to be taken seriously, so if people find him offensive and start bitching on social media, then the hell with them :-p

A script faithful to Duke Nukem's character can be written, and there won't be any problems or complaints.

The only catch is: you also have to replace John Cena with Angela Bassett.

Duke Nukem was sexist, yes, but his whole character was created in a tongue-in-cheek way. He was parodying the macho action hero.

Make it Duke and it will sell to people that want Duke. If you try to sell to people that were never going to see it anyway, they're still not going to see it and no matter what they're certainly not going to waste that bottled up vitriol. They'll spew it all over their Tumblr just as they intended to.

It's tricky, but possible. R-rated action-comedy is the right way to go about it, but not as slap-stick as Deadpool. But definitely 4x as over-the-top.

@rickroll10000: You are correct. Duke loves women -- a lot -- and was constantly saving them when possible. Just not in a way that's considered acceptable in the current era.

I dunno. Deadpool works because he's generally just a potty mouthed guy who likes to break the 4th wall. There's nothing really all that offensive there (aside from all the cursing, anyway). Duke is a pig. Granted, he's supposed to be a parody of what he represents, but nobody these days has a sense of humour.

It won't be a problem, because no one will see him doing anything misogynistic anyway. In fact... no one will even see him at all...

Considering how cool off a dude John Cena is, I highly doubt he will agree to play a character as sexist and misogynistic as Duke Nukem. Hell, his agent will warn him against it.

@jasperwest: I think Cena is very self-aware about his brand and wouldn’t agree to compromise that to star in a raunchy, blood and gore, sexually explicit crude R-rated film. He’s a Daddy’s Home/Transformers type of white bread action star, and that’s his lane.

I understand he did comedic spots in raunchy movies like Sisters and Trainwreck, but he was in those for a cup of coffee not the entire length of a feature film.

@jasperwest: I can't remember the name, but he was in a comedy a few years ago where he played a self-centered, sexist jerk. He's an actor. There's no reason he wouldn't play the role.

I'm less sure a character like Duke would fly with modern audiences at all, honestly. He wasn't even a good or interesting character in the 90s.

The MeToo minefield, and a combination of completely turning the soundtrack to hip-hop is what has me thinking this is gonna be horrible.

Of course I would love to be proven wrong on this.
