Modern Warfare 3 Remastered Is Not Happening, Activision Says

Reports about a remastered edition of the 2011 game are false.

Activision has denied that a remaster of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is in the works. The publisher said unequivocally in a statement that reports about a remaster of the 2011 game are false.

"A remaster of Modern Warfare 3, campaign or multiplayer, does not exist. Any reports otherwise are incorrect," a spokesperson for Activision told GameSpot.

CharlieIntel was first to report on Activision's statement in response to the rumors, which have been ongoing for months.

Activision released a remaster of Modern Warfare 2's campaign in 2020--one of two CoD remasters it's ever made--and rumors suggested Activision might look to do the same with Modern Warfare 3. The other remaster was for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare--this was initially offered only through the premium editions of Infinite Warfare in 2016 before being sold on its own. Unlike Modern Warfare 2 Remastered, Modern Warfare Remastered included campaign and multiplayer.

Modern Warfare 3 was developed by Infinity Ward and released on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, with Treyarch handling the Wii edition. A Nintendo DS version from n-Space was also released.

Call of Duty is now bigger than it ever has been. Activision supports the series on three main pillars: Call of Duty: Warzone, Call of Duty: Mobile, and the annual premium releases. The franchise is expanding even more, as Activision just announced the formation of a new studio to make a second Call of Duty mobile game. As for the mainline series, this year's game is coming from Sledgehammer Games and is believed to be set in World War II.

As all of this is happening, Activision Blizzard is being sued by the state of California for its "frat boy" culture and discrimination and harassment of women. For more on the case, you can see a timeline of all the key events.

My guess is the one upvote for this is from the spokesperson of Activision. :-)

@praneetloke: They released that over a year ago. March 2020 for PS4 and then April 2020 for Xbox and PC.

@mcnichoj: wasn't that a remaster, though? I am talking about a remake like they did with Modern Warfare two years ago.

apparently from my understanding. cod 4 was remastered and after that work began on both a MW2 remaster and MW3 remaster at the same time. both games had campaign and multiplayer remastered and have been ready for release since 2018 with a plan to them bundled together in what was going to be a MW collection.

after some shooting that happened in america, can't remember which one specifically the release plans were put on hold and after the release of MW 2019 activision didn't see much of a need to release a MW collection that could possible disrupt MW 2019's momentum, thats why MW2 only released with the campaign.

as far as i am aware MW2 and MW3 remasters are both complete and can be released at whatever point activision wishes if they feel like it is beneficial to do so. although with how successful warzone is its currently very unlikely we will see these remasters as activision doesn't want anything that could potentially slow down that warzone train.

if people want MW2/MW3 remasters to be released. stop playing warzone. :)

@xnshd: Just release exclusive cosmetics for Warzone that you can only get by buying MW3, problem solved. What's more likely the problem is the lack of extra revenue from MTs they can't get from singleplayer games.

I really hope they release it solely for completion sake though.

@mcnichoj:

no your not getting it. they don't want people playing other things that might take away from the playerbase of warzone. so tempting people to buy mw3/mw2 multiplayer or whatever with cosmetics for warzone isn't going to help because its still just splitting the playerbase and taking away resources from warzone which acti don't want.

they already have like 4 or 5 teams working on warzone. overall basically every single one of their studios is working on call of duty.

raven

high moon

beenox

toys for bob

infinity ward

treyarch

sledgehammer games

when you look at that its pretty sad really that all those studios have just become cod bitch studios.

@xnshd:MW2 has already been released, and I doubt MW3 release has anything to do with Warzone, since it was developed by a different studios and has always been treated as the ugly stepchild.

@jedijax: it has everything to do with warzone. activision doesn't want anything else related to cod eating up potential warzone revenue. what im talking about is mw2 and mw3 both having been remastered years ago and ready for release in 2018 yet that didn't happen because of some shooting in america around that time.
