Mirror's Edge 2 being honed by 'small team' - Report

EA EU VP Soderlund says new installment in DICE's slow-starting first-person action adventure will see release "for sure."

Electronic Arts made a number of gambles on new intellectual properties last year, all to varying degrees of success. One such risk that has yet to make a mark is Mirror's Edge, a parkour-inspired first-person action adventure developed by Swedish studio EA DICE. Upon its launch on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in November, the title generated positive review scores, but has barely sold over 250,000 units to date in the US. (It was also released on the PC early this year.)

EA is keeping the Faith.
EA is keeping the Faith.

Still, EA has not yet given up on the new franchise. In December, EA CEO John Riccitiello said that his company was evaluating the franchise's potential, and it appears Mirror's Edge survived the scrutiny. Speaking with UK site VideoGamer.com, EA Games Europe vice president Patrick Soderlund confirmed that a Mirror's Edge follow-up is in the works.

"You will see another Mirror's Edge for sure," Soderlund said. "It's just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it, and I'm excited about what we do." EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on Soderlund's statement as of press time.

Prior to Mirror's Edge's tepid launch extending a shadow over the franchise's future, EA DICE senior producer Owen O'Brien said that the game's current storyline has been mapped out as a trilogy. "I think there's a lot of scope to take the story in different directions, or maybe tell someone else's story," he said. "But certainly for these first couple games, it's all about Faith. It's all about her experience in the world." The producer also noted a primary focus for a Mirror's Edge sequel would be a level editor.

The Mirror's Edge series also has friends in high places. Speaking with GameSpot as part of a 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo interview, EA Games president Frank Gibeau expressed faith in the series, noting that it "did quite well in Europe, but not as well in the US."

I think after three years people still wanting a Mirrors Edge 2 shows that if some of it downfalls are fixed it would be a profitable game for EA and DICE.

Even if the first one was short I kind of liked the story, because I like that type of futuristic world, anyway the game was awesome I hope they make another one.

I completed the first mirror's edge yesterday, it was AMAZING. It was such a refreshing idea for a FPS, And the realism and the point of view finally in first TOTAL perspective was incredible. Now i'm going to complete all the achievs, while i wait for this Mirror's edge 2 (i've heard it's a trilogy *_*) to be completed and released. KEEP EM COMING EA! 8D

I just finished Mirrors Edge and can't wait for another one. I agree with you guys: free roam, level and runner designer and definitively longer story.

i was about to type a comment along the lines of "one of my all time favorite games. but some element of customization, like a map editor, would make it my favorite." then i saw in the article that they are focusing on a map editor. i don't know about you guys but i am without any doubt in my mind going to purchase this game. the first one was absolutely incredible but too short. im glad they aren't listening to the bad sales, cuz everyone i show it to loves it. a tv commercial would probably get the name out there. i just want another mirror's edge!

Lets hope this one contains a Prototype/Assassins Creed style Freeroam element where you can start a mission anytime you want and collect all of the hidden bags whenever you want instead of straying from the path and getting them, it'll be nice if there would be a view perspective toggle, i wouldn't mind trying out 3rd person with this game, don't get me wrong the first person view is awesome but i think we can all agree it gets a bit clumsy from time to time, especially when you do a roll and the camera goes insane, the realism is good but it does get a bit off putting in my opinion.

I loved Mirror's Edge and I didn't think it had any gameplay issues. The only problem for me was that it was just too short. The second game needs to be at least two or three times as long.

I played Mirror's Edge for about half an hour before deciding I was going to buy it when I got the cash. Haven't regretted it yet and would love to have another to add to the collection.

I had such a good time playing the first one. I was hoping for a sequel. This game has real potential. Beautiful graphics and a fantastic soundtrack. All they need to do is fix some minor flaws, and the game could be great.

;D Mirror's Edge is the greatest 1st person game i have ever experienced in my life. While challenging,(still stuck on a VERY hard part of the last level, the one with all the cpu machines and stuff)still a great experience, and feels amazing when you make a huge jump(felt awesome on the crane jump). VERY happy to hear of Mirror's Edge 2. Lets see Faith in another heart-pounding game!

wow this is an incredible game. I only payed $6 for it for PC! It was really entertaining. I think in the second one u should be a runner who actually delivers packages and messages and stuff...and then maybe 1 day a package rips open and u find something out...like a hit list or something...and then u have to try and stop and it becomes like a conspiracy...just a thought, though. And a level editor would literally be perfect for this game.

WOW i loved this game. The 2nd one would be better, if only they manage to take out some of the quirks in the 1st one. For example, better gunplay, more objectives (such as packages to retrieve), and a multiplayer mode which focuses on the game's combat, gunplay, and fast-paced running. Maybe capture the flag? It would be pretty cool trying to capture an opponents flag over the rooftops of many buildings. It would involve stealth and creativity.

I loved the original, I played the entire thing through two times. The first time is just frustrating trial-and-error, making you redo the same section multiple times, especially in chase sections. I felt accomplished though when I finally got to the end of a level, though I was often guilty of checking walkthroughs. The second time is just kind of a breeze/speedrun for me, since I remembered how I got passed the parts I was stuck on.

I thought it was really good, albeit quite short and SUPREMELY irritating in some sections. I would like them to give Faith a gun in the next one. Some of the sections in the first felt as if she really needed one...

The gameplay was too broken, and what's more it was broken in a way that can't be fixed - unless you know just where you're going, you're going to blow it - often. So by the time you've mastered a level, the thrill you WOULD have felt if you'd known just how to get from point A to point B on the first run through or two is dead because it must first become routine. Hence, one remembers the peaks of frustration at parts that were unintuitive, but doesn't remember the highs. And because of the fact that acquiring mastery of the courses drills the fun out of them with constant, unceasing and infuriating trial and error, the reason it can be hard to remember the highs is because...well...with a gameplay structure so broken, it is exceptionally rare for there to be any.

The game was amazing and rather unique.I enjoy it still to this day and occasionally like going online to race the ghosts.I rather have actual players to race against in real time and in general beat the crap out of to get to my next goal.Nothing like a clothesline to say im 1st lol.But truly competitive play would of made the game alot better, to the point of a higher rating and more buys. That and a little better work on the framerate. Here is to hoping they fix all this and bring a number 2 out.

I'm not sure how excited I can get for a supposed sequel in the works, whenever or however that comes about... Good to hear EA is interested in carrying this new franchise to higher places. Hopefully, they don't get too carried away with their usual series extravaganza nonsense. If the idea is not there, please let the first Mirrors Edge be remembered in a good way...

I love this game and I'm glad I bought this. The short story didn't really bother me. It would have been nice to have a little longer story but the length was okay and I have replayed this about 5 or 6 times already! It would be brilliant to see a map editing feature in the sequel and a bit of multiplayer such as races or a chasing mode like tag maybe? The soundtrack was superb and the graphics were incredibly beautiful. It would have been nice if the combat was a bit less restrictive and a bit more flowing but that just gives us gamers something to look forward to in the sequel!

I like the fact that EA doesn't abandon fairly new,''unsuccessful'' IPs in the first round. It proves their commitment towards creating new and fresh products. At least they are not milking off cheap, popular sport franchises and such.
