Mirror's Edge 2 being honed by 'small team' - Report

EA EU VP Soderlund says new installment in DICE's slow-starting first-person action adventure will see release "for sure."

Electronic Arts made a number of gambles on new intellectual properties last year, all to varying degrees of success. One such risk that has yet to make a mark is Mirror's Edge, a parkour-inspired first-person action adventure developed by Swedish studio EA DICE. Upon its launch on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in November, the title generated positive review scores, but has barely sold over 250,000 units to date in the US. (It was also released on the PC early this year.)

EA is keeping the Faith.
EA is keeping the Faith.

Still, EA has not yet given up on the new franchise. In December, EA CEO John Riccitiello said that his company was evaluating the franchise's potential, and it appears Mirror's Edge survived the scrutiny. Speaking with UK site VideoGamer.com, EA Games Europe vice president Patrick Soderlund confirmed that a Mirror's Edge follow-up is in the works.

"You will see another Mirror's Edge for sure," Soderlund said. "It's just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it, and I'm excited about what we do." EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on Soderlund's statement as of press time.

Prior to Mirror's Edge's tepid launch extending a shadow over the franchise's future, EA DICE senior producer Owen O'Brien said that the game's current storyline has been mapped out as a trilogy. "I think there's a lot of scope to take the story in different directions, or maybe tell someone else's story," he said. "But certainly for these first couple games, it's all about Faith. It's all about her experience in the world." The producer also noted a primary focus for a Mirror's Edge sequel would be a level editor.

The Mirror's Edge series also has friends in high places. Speaking with GameSpot as part of a 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo interview, EA Games president Frank Gibeau expressed faith in the series, noting that it "did quite well in Europe, but not as well in the US."

Guns are fine as long as it's only a pistol. Faith can still jump around and do stuff with a pistol in hand. Faith with a machine gun though is just dumb. Boss battles need to be more varied too, slide kicking 10 times in a row because it's the only thing that reliably works is just stupid.

this game really is a guilty pleasure of mine. i never thought it was an incredibly good game but it was just plain fun to play. i agree with a lot of people here; longer story, free roam, and more routes would really set this sequel apart since the original was so innovative as far as game play goes.

Mirror's Edge is one of the best EA games to come out in a long time. The graphics and visuals are usually bright and vibrant accompanied by beautiful and serene music, this game certainly has one of the best soundtracks of all time. I HATE EA but I love Mirror's Edge and I am definitely going to get Mirror's Edge 2. I don't know how a map editor will work in a game like Mirror's Edge but I cant wait. Red Faction: Guerrilla definitely would have been awesome with a map editor.

How to improve: Longer Bigger For the love ofun stop with the gunplay. This isn't the type of game for it. I personally don't even want to be able to pick up a gun in the game.

The original showed a lot of promise. Hopefully they can iron out the issues in the sequel.

Cool. I own the first one and despite the very steep learning curve and infuriating moments it wasn't too bad. Hopefully they will write all the wrongs and get a sequel spot on.

The first one was amazing, and i hope this one will be even better. The inclusion of some underwater sections would be a nice touch imo.. Let's see what EA DICE will come up with. Looking forward to this one! Oh and those who only played the game: stop reading and buy the full game! It's story doesn't last long but it's a million times better than the demo's training course!

Well to be fairly honest the foundations of Mirror's Edge are very solid, the story was good and the gameplay sans the near-pointless enemies was excellent but the game was simply lacking in content.

A more convoluted approach to map design would be helpful with multiple routes to choose from like in earlier Prince of persia games so that there's some real incentive to go back and play "completed" levels in another way. So long as they apply common sense I can't see how they can go wrong.

The first game was very immersive and gave a true sense of depth to the gaming enviroment. It was the first game to truly make me appreciate surround sound speakers and a big TV. On-top of all that it was just plain fun and had a great story! Bring on ME2! (Mirror's Edge 2 that is, although Mass Effect 2 will also be greatly appreciated... )

Everyone's askin for open-world gameplay, so EA DICE better give it. Got Mirror's Edge for my birthday from my mom when I wanted MGS4 (the reason was because it was on sale), was disappointed, but found that it was an amazing game with a very likable main character. Oh, and decreased load times would be nice also.

Hopefully they won't change the game to appeal to a larger crowd. I loved the first one (my GOTY last year) and don't want anything to change... only get better. Will definitely get this day one.

I'm one of the 250k, loved the feel, sound, and pace of the first but as many already said, we want the campaign to be longer and open world. An actual real-time multiplayer would be interesting...

The game went on to sell over a million copies worldwide so it was not a complete flop. It just didn't sell as well as in the U.S. as EA hoped it would. I like the headlines on this web site but sometimes they can be very picky about what facts to write and what not.

I have 1 suggestion for M.E. 2 They should design the game, like Assassins Creed in a way that, you can go where you want, when you want, like i love how in Assassins Creed how you can either do a mission or just have fun exploring the vast cities... Like i want freedom. And lots of it! I dont wanna follow the path of the editors, i want to get there, the way i want! if they do just that, they have an instant guaranteed buy from me, who else agrees?

The ONLY reason the first Mirror's Edge failed so bad is because of how short it was. If they can make a real campaign out of it, their sales will skyrocket.

Loved the first one as well. Just need to tweak the combat a bit more. And as many said here, make it a lengthier experience.

This is sweet. I just got the first one yesterday and I'm loving it. It's really cheap now as well. About $20-30 depending on where you look for it. Really great deal for that price. The game's awesome.

I'm really happy about this. Mirror's Edge, much like a game such as Assassin's Creed, had its flaws but was one of those games that was clearly a great foundation for future titles. Considering how innovative it is, it was a bit much to expect a perfect product the first time out. I'm really looking forward to this, whenever it shows up and am glad EA didn't give up on it.
