Mirror's Edge 2 being honed by 'small team' - Report

EA EU VP Soderlund says new installment in DICE's slow-starting first-person action adventure will see release "for sure."

Electronic Arts made a number of gambles on new intellectual properties last year, all to varying degrees of success. One such risk that has yet to make a mark is Mirror's Edge, a parkour-inspired first-person action adventure developed by Swedish studio EA DICE. Upon its launch on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in November, the title generated positive review scores, but has barely sold over 250,000 units to date in the US. (It was also released on the PC early this year.)

EA is keeping the Faith.
EA is keeping the Faith.

Still, EA has not yet given up on the new franchise. In December, EA CEO John Riccitiello said that his company was evaluating the franchise's potential, and it appears Mirror's Edge survived the scrutiny. Speaking with UK site VideoGamer.com, EA Games Europe vice president Patrick Soderlund confirmed that a Mirror's Edge follow-up is in the works.

"You will see another Mirror's Edge for sure," Soderlund said. "It's just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it, and I'm excited about what we do." EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on Soderlund's statement as of press time.

Prior to Mirror's Edge's tepid launch extending a shadow over the franchise's future, EA DICE senior producer Owen O'Brien said that the game's current storyline has been mapped out as a trilogy. "I think there's a lot of scope to take the story in different directions, or maybe tell someone else's story," he said. "But certainly for these first couple games, it's all about Faith. It's all about her experience in the world." The producer also noted a primary focus for a Mirror's Edge sequel would be a level editor.

The Mirror's Edge series also has friends in high places. Speaking with GameSpot as part of a 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo interview, EA Games president Frank Gibeau expressed faith in the series, noting that it "did quite well in Europe, but not as well in the US."

i played the first ME on PC and I have to say that the gameplay was quite good, although it was a very short game. it's a little difficult to fight when you are in FPP mode, that's why I would like to see also TPP mode that we could switch to. That would be so much better to see Faith doing all that parkour stuff, don't you think?

There's about 3 reasons it didn't sell well IMO: 1) People were skeptical about the game and pirated it 2) People were skeptical about the game and rented it...and beat it because it was so short 3) People were skeptical about the game and didn't rent nor buy/pirate it. And they had a decent reason to be skeptical I believe since it's a totally different game. You're mostly just running and such like a platformer, but in first person.

I like the game, but it was way too short. I also would have like the option of an over the shoulder view.

they need to combine the sweet environment navigation and hand to hand combat with better FPS shooting aspects. it would make the game longer because you would get bogged down during major battles and you could have multiple paths to either ambush or avoid contact.

The original was a nice little game that like many have already said.. needed to be quite a bit longer "and" needed a bit more meat on the bone in terms of varied gameplay. I didnt mind the bright colors because that was apart of its intended personality.. just please no more progressive insurance commercial type cutscenes.

Didn't like the bright colours of the first game much and it was so quick to complete. Maybe they should make the 2nd game a sandbox one so you can go anywhere instead of following a set path

Honestly this game was really subpar. EA could have done so much more with this concept, but shocker EA f**ks up another opportunity to make a great game and instead makes another 6.5er. The story in mirror's edge is absolutely awful and uninspiring. OH EM GEE CELESTE YOU BETRAYED ME!!!! Stereotypical EA cookie cutter plot if you ask me. "Merc" lawl...

I'm glad EA gave the green light for another mirror's edge. More developers need to take chances with gameplay like DICE did.

Excuse me, Mr. Sandpiper121PP, but what collection are you talking about? A limited time collection? Sorry, for some people this is not a collection. I admit, is a good game, but I see that is only for rent. After you make some upgrades, you'll see too.

If it had either an open world or an SDK of some description then I'd probably still be playing it (as I'm still playing L4D due to the new maps and mods).

Ok. FIrst off Mirror's Edge was probably the best non shooter game i have ever played! I mean come on... jumping from building to building while sprinting at full speed and avoiding a helicopter the whole time! Tell me that is not amazing... Second gabl098 the whole point of Mirror's Edge was the fact that you DON'T shoot... the point was to disarm and run. They don't need better shooting mechanics...

I originally bought it for PS3 and was disappointed; not by the game itself, but by it's relentless trial/error system. However, after I played it on PC, I immediately bought it for that platform, and never looked back. Mouse > Controller for 1st person, hands down.

The first one completely gyped your money....it was short, linear, and the combat mechanics were pretty shoddy. The gameplay was solid in terms of the running, jumping, etc. but without an abundance of modes to take advantage of a great acrobatics system, it became repetitive and old really quickly. When the release ME2, they better have a longer game with more MP modes to warrant another $50-60 purchase. Also, they better fix the disarming mechanics to make them more solid...I'm a little worried considering there's only a small team working on it, but i'm cautiously optimistic

NEEDS ONLINE RACES. also it would be cool if you could also go down to street level or other places full of people rather than just empty rooftops. also more missions with other runners - it would be super cool to have like 20 people free running all around you. now obviously mirrors edge isn't about guns and combat in general, but does anyone else think it would be cool to have, say, COD + Mirrors Edge? So you could be free running but in a death match situation? just a thought.

If you want more gunplay, go play a more shallow game like halo.... That's not Mirror's Edge is about.
