Microsoft Was "Stupid" To Close Arkane Austin And Lose Its Dream Team, Arkane Founder Says

"Recreating a very special group like that is, I would dare to say, impossible."

Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio has commented on Microsoft shutting down Arkane Austin earlier this year, a decision the WolfEye Studios boss has labeled a "dumb move" made by the company. According to the veteran game developer, Arkane Austin was comprised of a "special" group of people who had the potential to make another hit game but never got the chance to do so following the poorly received Redfall.

"I think if you look a little bit, it's obvious that Arkane Austin was a very special group of people that have made some cool things and that could pull it off again," Colantonio said to PC Gamer. "Recreating a very special group like that is, I would dare to say, impossible. It takes forever. When you have that magic of Harvey [Smith] and Ricardo [Bare] that all come together, it's a specific moment in time and space that just worked out this way, that took forever to reach. Those people together can really make magic. It's not like, 'Doesn't matter, we'll just rehire.' No, try it. That's what big groups do all the time. They try to just hire massively and overpay people to create those magic groups. It doesn't work like this. So to me, that was stupid."

Colantonio left the company he created after the release of the critically acclaimed Prey in 2017, citing creative differences in a separate PC Gamer interview. "All I can tell you is that part of the reason why I left Bethesda was that they did not want to do the kind of games that we wanted to make," Colantonio said, explaining that Bethesda had decided to shift toward making more live-service games back then.

While Arkane Austin is no more, Deathloop developer Arkane Lyon is still in action and is currently working on Marvel's Blade. Alpha Dog Games, Roundhouse Games, and Tango Gameworks were also shut down in May, but a few months later, PUBG publisher Krafton acquired the Hi-Fi Rush developer. A large number of employees have returned to Tango, and the studio is now working on Hi-Fi Rush 2, a game that Krafton doesn't anticipate will be profitable but it still sees as essential for nurturing creativity in the industry.

In related news, Sony shut down developer Firewalk Studios this week, following the disastrous launch of its live-service game Concord in August. As a result of this, Concord has been permanently sunset.

@dushness: Dude, they (the majority of the Arkane Austin team members) made Dishonored 1 and 2, Prey, and Deathloop. All massively, critically acclaimed games. Arkane Austin was most definitely a dream team of developers. They release one ho-hum game and they get the boot? Terrible decision on Microsoft's behalf. No wonder Microsoft has been losing the console wars for two decades. They can't make one singular quality development decision.

What a special team that developed the digital rubbish called "Redfall". This guy sounds like he went crazy, it's probably the reason for why Microsoft made the decision and no wonder Redfall failed lol. Why Redfall failed is not like a simple mistake or bad luck, it's just because it's not developed to be a video game that's fun, a video game that has quality, a video game players can relate, a video game players can find something useful about it. Even another digital rubbish called Death Stranding somewhat has the aspect of enjoying sightseeing. These days when a video game is not a video game but an utter rubbish people at least focus on sightseeing aspect of the game. For example all the good things I ever heard around about Starfield, Star Wars Outlaws and Unknown 9 Awakening is just about these people enjoying seeing some vista. Which means they are the type of people who can enjoy seeing random rubbish just because it looks different and therefore they would wanna travel around the world for it instead of just looking at its image on Google. However Redfall has nothing bruh. Bruh. :DDD

I honestly have no idea what the hell happened to Arkane. I did enjoy playing Arx Fatalis for its wizard simulator aspect. Then the other popular game Dishonored 1 released. This game is an artwork thanks to its graphics, design and lore. But then what the hell is Dishonored 2? It was like developed by random people just ordered to release a sequel who didn't get the art of Dishonored. Whatever there was cool in the first game was absent in the 2nd game. And 3rd game gone woke. Prey rather had a story like inspired by Philip K. D. (his surname is another word for penis lol) but gameplay, progression and the ending was bad. It also suffered from what was bad aspect of Dishonored games that super power doesn't feel super and the power you have is unnecessary. Dishonored 1 is still fun when you play without superpowers, and super powers is not all the deal of the game. However Prey somewhat make players require to use super powers yet Prey is boring without super powers. All the fun I had was just because it was like experiencing a Philip K. D. book but around the end and when the end game felt like a waste of time. And then they released Deathloop which IDK much about the game. It seems like a weird game about a man and a woman hating each other, is this a symbolism of the recent gender war started in USA lol? And there is Redfall which this is something they should teach people what kind of video games they shouldn't develop. :DDD

Technically Arkane only had one decent game and its Dishonored 1. Which means the team that was part of Dishonored 1 was a special team therefore objectively a special video game was the result. Afterwards Arkane couldn't prove they are good and can develop good games anymore. Their quality is reduced objectively so excuse Microsoft for being a businessperson who don't wanna invest on waste of time. Cannot make business with promise and potential. Arkane cannot show decent results anymore and their success on Dishonored 1 was just luck.

Yeah F*CK Microsoft and Sony they're bothe absolute garbage now. One closed two of the best studios in the industry for no goddamn reason the other pushes a studio into the spotlight calling them the future of PlayStation then when the game underperformed they get shuttered even though that's douchebag CEO's fault and they're creatively bankrupt to the point that they're remastering games multiple times

@tbird7586: Shit, EA's been doing that since the 90's. Welcome to late-stage capitalism. We're all going to get squeezed until there's nothing left.

@oldtaku: Yes, I've found that anyone who uses 'woke' as a pejorative is just trying to mask their bigotry under what they consider to be acceptable language.
