Microsoft on Xbox One vertical orientation: "Do it at your own risk"

Microsoft told GameSpot today that the Xbox One won't support vertical orientation due to the inclusion of a slot loading drive.

The Xbox One won't support vertical orientation, and could damage the console, according to Albert Panello, senior director of product management and planning at Xbox.

No Caption Provided

Panello revealed to GameSpot at the Tokyo Game Show, "We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk." He clarified that "it wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both".

The Xbox One isn't the only system to feature a slot loading drive; both the PlayStation 3--original and slim models--and PlayStation 4 have a similar design, and users are free to orient those consoles horizontally or vertically without risking damage to the console.

Panello stated that Microsoft discovered that "we found, interestingly enough, that 80 percent of people, believe it or not, have their Xbox [360] horizontally".

The Xbox One is scheduled for launch in North America, most European markets, Australia, and New Zealand on November 22 this year, with follow-up releases in Japan and the remaining European markets in 2014.

80% of people had it horizontally because the xbox360 would destroy discs if put vertical. Almost like Microsoft forgets their own history or is blatantly obtuse about it.

I swear, the xbox360 is the only product I own in my house that is crappy enough that it can't handle a vertical move. Even a 90's barbie dvd player can do it.

LOL

I play my Xbox360 UPSIDE DOWN

I hope the XBOX ONE allows you to play your console upside down!

If not I will be so UPSET.

Not that I care much about the Xbox One after all the stupidity Microsoft thought they could get away with, but what kind of an idiot puts their Xbox 360 vertically? One of the air vents gets blocked, so overheating is more likely, it's likely to fall to the ground if it gets hit by something and finally the discs might get damaged (obviously you should have the bigger hdd version and install the games, but nevertheless)... Yeah, it may look cooler like that, but it's not a very logical position for the machine if you want it to last as long as possible...

@MJV1989 Yeah that is true and I for one did put my 360 vertically once and the disc tray sticks from time to time now since I did that.

honestly.. my 360 was horizontal because it scratched all my discs while position vertical. Microsoft consistently defends itself poorly while also ignorantly insulting it's customers

@watchuwad If you list this as a valid reason for not getting the console (which it isn't btw), then you had already made up your mind anyway and just wanted another reason to complain.

@FadeToBlack90 @watchuwad I don't care about vertical orientation but you know what I do care about? Being lied to. They didn't even care enough to come up with a plausible lie, MS would have us believe that this is a common issue with slot loading drives when it clearly is not.

Does anyone own a Vita in the US? I'm not trying to be coy, I've just never seen one in the wild, rather only at Best Buy and GameStop in the case. Around here the iPod touch is the on the go gaming device of choice.

@kingliono I live up here in Toronto, Canada and I have seen people buy them, but I have not seen them in the streets at all.

The DS's and 3DS's and smartphones and tablets are mobile gaming of choice.

@kennythomas26 @kingliono that's just it, I have one but most of the time I play it at home. The game are great and all but they aren't very mobile focused.

Ms has discovered a hardware issue during X1 production.

It will cause the system to fail similar to an RLOD however it is not a heating issue that causes it.

When a user calls customer service to complain about how their unit stopped working the rep will be required to follow a script that implies the user damaged the product by powering it on vertically.

You were warned.

erm, so why not design the XB1 to stand vertically as well? Then everyone's happy? TBH I don't really care.

They clearly didn't want people getting upset when their VHS tapes got jammed. That's why you can't mount vertically.

I'm increadably confused by this. As the article points out, every console in the last generation was slot loaded and had the ability to stand vertically. What is so different about the X1? Are they just lying?

Nothing like some good-new-fashioned Microsoft logic: "Because the majority of users don't use the feature, lets scrap it for inadequate reasons and limit everyone's options." I guess it isn't that big of a deal, but still, was there any real reason to not include the option? At $500 per unit, I can hardly imagine it was a price issue.

Wow! Supposedly top of the line technology, which you can talk to, go on the internet with, watch sports and TV and I think it even plays games but can't go on it's side to take up less space on my entertainment center. Interesting.

I'm usually not a fan of vertical orientation on game systems. Anyone can see that when an object is longer one way than the other, that it's safer to lay it down on its longer side.

The PS3 logo turns if you have the system standing. The Wii was the only system I had standing for the duration of the system's life, which is still going. Nintendo always makes better quality stuff though. My opinion don't hate on it. 1 NES, 1 Game Boy, <the original one> 1 SuperNES, 1 N64 and 1 Wii. The PS3 is the only other system brand that I have never had to buy another for the life of the system. Just the hard drive that is all.

Same thing applies here, if this was the Wii U or PS4 people wouldn't care. Because hating MS is the cool thing to you, but how many of you are running Microsoft Windows right now?
