Microsoft Has No Plans To Add Online Play For GoldenEye On Xbox

Microsoft says it has "no plans" to add online play, which seems to be exclusive to the Switch version of the game.

A new version of the classic N64 shooter GoldenEye is coming to Xbox, but Microsoft has now confirmed it will not have any online multiplayer support like the Switch version has.

This was already strongly suggested, and now it's been confirmed in a statement from Microsoft to The Verge. The company said it has "no plans to include online multiplayer as part of GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Game Pass..." The statement went on to point out that GoldenEye for Xbox will have local multiplayer, where up to four players can duke it out just like they could back in the '90s.

The N64 game has been "faithfully recreated for Xbox consoles," developer Rare, which is owned by Microsoft, said when GoldenEye was announced for Xbox. It will include achievements, 4K resolution (for supported TVs), and a smother framerate. There will be split-screen local multiplayer that benefits from improved framerate, too. In a blog post, Microsoft said players can expect new control options, like dual analogue stick support, as well as a native 16:9 resolution.

GoldenEye for Xbox is coming to Game Pass, but a release date was not announced. Similarly, Microsoft did not say what the game will cost as a standalone purchase, if it's available that way.

Everyone who owns a digital copy Rare Replay, the compilation pack of classic Rare games, will get GoldenEye at no extra cost. Here are the first screenshots of GoldenEye for Xbox:

GoldenEye is also coming to Switch via backwards compatibility for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack owners. The Switch version has online play, along with other updates.

A new version of GoldenEye was supposed to come to Xbox 360 years ago, but it ran into licensing issues. The HD remaster later leaked, and now it's officially coming to Xbox and Switch.

A GoldenEye remake for the Wii was released in 2010, but it featured Daniel Craig standing in for Pierce Brosnan. A Reloaded edition for PS3 and Xbox 360 was released later.

In other news, Hitman developer IO Interactive is developing a new James Bond game that will tell an original story for the British superspy. Given 2022 is an anniversary year for the James Bond series, here's to hoping we get to see or learn more about the game this year.

i would want modern control scheme over the n64 version, since dual stick became a thing for 1st person shooter and fix the aiming when you ads-ing, because doing that on perfect dark xbla version - still acts like the n64 version which is annoying when you get to mission 2.

either that, i need 2 n64 "switch" controller to play like a modern 1st person shooter back then, when you need to have 2 n64 controller to play in dual stick mode.

@nintendians: the analog stick is copied to the c buttons on the n64 on switch and you can change the control scheme that lets you use them to move, duh. i thought yall were fans. so yes with a simple in game setting it will have dual analog controls duh.

@warmeatgames: https://goldeneye.fandom.com/wiki/Control_style - since it's emulating the n64 version, none of the single controller scheme has the c buttons as looking up and down and turn left and right, which on the right stick on a "switch" pro controller and move up/down and strafe left/right on the n64 single joystick which going to be the left stick on the "switch" joy con (l)/left stick on the "switch" pro controller. if you want to used dual stick mode, you require 2 n64 "switch" controller like you do on the original n64 - only "2.2 Galore" n64 controller scheme looks modern but you have to swap controller 1 and 2 for nintendo 64. if you want dual stick on the "switch" joy cons and pro controller for goldeneye for player 1, you'll need to remap your controller on the "switch" system settings.

while the xbox one/series x can't used a n64 "switch" controller (unless you mod your xbox one/series x), microsoft did say it going to have dual stick control scheme in mind, all they have to do is just copy and paste perfect dark xbla control scheme for goldeneye for xbox one/series x version.

i guess you haven't play goldeneye or perfect dark on the n64 with 2 n64 controller as player 1 yet.

@rewgle: Yes they did, but Nintendo demanded system parity and wanted Microsoft to effectively build them a version of Live for online play before they would allow the game to be released. Obviously that wasn't going to happen.

I hope either version is as decent as the xbox remaster that leaked a few years ago, where you can swap between old snd new graphics and the controls are already pretty smartly mapped to the xbox controller

Microsoft can't include it because it's part of the concession/deal made with Nintendo.

Conversely, Nintendo has to emulate the N64 version and can't use a remastered version, while Xbox can't add the aforementioned online multiplayer.

So we get two different versions and neither is as complete as they could be. Way to go Nintendo and Microsoft.

@sabredj: Also it seems the majority of the people complaining about the Switch having online MP have no idea why that is the case or how it works.

It was not something they added to the game but rather how the emulator works that makes it possible. On the Switch it treats N64 controller ports as online ports, so the game is still presented in split screen but someone can join the game online as if they were on the couch next to you. So Nintendo did not add online MP to the title, it was only enabled due to the way the N64 emulator works on the Switch...and even then it is just split-screen extended to online players (so screen cheating is still available).

@dlCHIEF58: Great point.. actually I've seen some reasonable speculation that it might just boil down to doing a modern online multiplayer would require a rewrite of code which neither company probably wanted to invest in the game.

So like you said, the Nintendo online is multiplayer because of the emulator, but still has split screen, which a lot of people will hate in the current day anyway.

A classic game that I used to love back in the day. Though, for me, playing classics today is very hit and miss. Games have evolved so much since then, both in terms of visuals and gameplay. I think old RPGs are the only thing I let slide lol.
