Metroid: Other M Impressions

Nintendo gets right to the point, showing off a brief new trailer for Metroid: Other M, which will grace store shelves this August.

Nintendo is good at showing its audience just enough to get us excited for what's in store for the future. At its E3 2010 press conference, it continued to torment us with short looks at anticipated games, including a new trailer for Metroid: Other M. The trailer showed us a few images we've seen before, but it also focused a lot more on the exploration elements of the series, including the morph ball and the visor. In fact, Nintendo of America CEO Reggie Fils-Aime concluded after the trailer was shown that when it comes to Metroid: Other M, "What hasn't been lost is the sense of isolation and exploration." And if the trailer is any indication, Reggie speaks the truth.

No Caption Provided

Like many of the trailers Nintendo showed off, the one for Other M consisted mostly of quick cuts between cutscenes and gameplay. We did catch glimpses of things we've seen previously. For example, we saw a giant monster rise out of a pool of molten lava, and as part of this battle, Samus ran across its hulking form. We also saw plenty of other thought-provoking sights: jungle environments, puzzles revolving around the morph ball, and shooting sections viewed from both a first- and third-person perspective. There were also wall-jumping and platforming sequences intercut with dramatic views of Samus falling from the air and landing with a commanding thud. The trailer wasn't as packed with action as previous ones, however. There was a greater emphasis on the visor, which will be used to scan the environment as it was in Metroid Prime, and we saw more of the environmental puzzle-solving that has made the series such a success.

Fils-Aime ended the presentation by informing us that Metroid: Other M will feature important elements of that franchise but also explore new emotional corridors. We won't need to wait long to travel down these new paths; Metroid: Other M will hit store shelves on August 31, 2010. And if what we saw is any indication, it will be good to catch up with Samus and see where she's heading next.

Have my copy reserved. I actually decided to pick up Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and start playing it from the beginning. I got stuck on it and put it down for a year, but I am having a blast with it now! Man the Prime series was excellent, but I think it was time for it to end. I really hope Other M does a great job of mixing new and old Metroid elements as well as bringing a fresh experience to the table. And I want my Metroid to be lonely, eerie, and depressing.

The metroid prime series explored new routes, new sensations of freedom, and tight controls, but I hope metroid: other m returns to the roots of super metroid. I not entirely over excited about the first person action (if I wanted to, I would go replay metroid prime), but the trailers reveal some extremely serene environments and old school controls that seem promising

@baklinermr That updated super Metroid you were talking about, it's called Metroid: Zero Mission for the GBA. I suggest you pick it up and enjoy.

I am excited about this game. How funny would it be if Team Ninja took a cue from the Dead or Alive series and made a Metroid Xtreme Beach Volleyball game with Samus in a bathing suit?

@guyguygut1234 I got a strategy guide for the Metroid Prime Trilogy, It's so much better so you don't get lost. or if you stop playing for a while for some reason you will remember where you are and where u left off. It's a way better experience if you have directions, it really helps. Give it a try with the guide, don't miss out on some of the most atmospheric games you'll ever play.

@guyguyguy1234 I agree with what you said about Metroid Prime. I had plenty of fun with it and MP2, but I always had the feeling like I was forgetting something or leaving something behind, and if I played without a guide, I always wondered if I was on the right track. I'm looking forward to a slightly more linear experience.

Playing Metroid Prime was like running through a mirror maze in the dark. It was a ton of fun, but you arent entirely sure what you are doing, and find it too difficult sometimes. Hopefully this will be more like the platformers, where its a bit more linear..

I think they need to offer an updated sidescrolling version in the vein of Super Metroid, much as they have with the whole New Super Mario thing. That would really rock.

video games consist of two parts: audio and visual. audio is supplemental, but can greatly enhance or detract from a game. the visual part of a video game is inherently an artform: it IS art. but how can an artist whose medium is constantly changing keep his style the same? it's impossible, and quite useless, too. so cherish the old, but look FORWARD to the new!

@DrEvilKoala I understand your concern, because I admit that I'm a little nervous as well. But I just hold on to the thought that Nintendo won't disrespect one of it's most beloved franchises.

@DrEvilKoala (how do i tag people) yea ofc it won't be the same, but there is something with those flashy colors in general that takes away the feeling which all metroid games have had...

@rexona2412 Of course Other M isn't looking like Metroid Prime. It's not part of the series. It's called Metroid: Other M, not Metroid Prime: Other M. As good as the Prime series was, people thought a first-person Metroid game was unthinkable, but now the series is synonymous to first person to a lot of people. You just got to have some faith in Nintendo ;) (Although I do agree with you on the new Zelda. Don't know what to make of that...)

i am really disappointed in nintendo's E3 so far, i don't know why but for some reason they have managed to remove all the epicness from their classics, i.e. metroid prime and zelda... mario is perhaps the only franchise that has "survived" the change to motion control... other m is no where near metroid prime, nor is the new zelda anything like wind waker, not to mention ocarina of time...

@etai79 I kind of liked the scanning element of the Prime series, except in Prime 2. It made everything look muddy in the scan visor, as opposed to nice little icons in the first one.

I didn't see any scanning going on, which is good, because that gimmick ruined the Prime series. All I saw was the highlighting of objects.

Too late, Mega_Loser. I doubt you will be able to find it anywhere. Even if you try to get a used disc, it will be from a private seller. Selling it for $70 + shipping.
