Metal Gear Solid 5 dev defends Ground Zeroes length

"Are Journey and Dear Esther long?" Kojima Productions' Jordan Amaro asks.

No Caption Provided

The length of a game isn't necessarily associated with its quality. That's the message Kojima Productions designer Jordan Amaro has for fans up in arms about the recent news that you might be able to complete Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes in just one sitting.

"Are Journey and Dear Esther long? [Voltaire's 18th-century writing Candide] is like a hundred pages at most," Amaro said. "Yet they are masterpieces of video game and literature. This smearing will not stain and affect what we're aiming to achieve with MGS, the game industry in Japan, or video games as a whole."

Journey and Dear Esther might not be long games, but they sell for $15 and $10, respectively. That's below what Konami is charging for Ground Zeroes, which ranges from $20-$40 depending on platform and delivery choice.

"I want people to celebrate the new MGS like we used to. I'm not dismissing their concerns. But this [issue surrounding the game's length] has been trumped-up," Amaro said.

The game is a prequel to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which is said to be "hundreds of times larger" than Ground Zeroes. Konami hasn't set a release date for that game yet.

The length of Ground Zeroes isn't the only part of the game drawing heated debate. It's also been revealed that the PlayStation 4 version of the game looks "slightly better" than the Xbox One iteration, a point that Metal Gear Solid series creator Hideo Kojima reportedly agrees with.

Konami has yet to confirm whether or not there is a resolution or frame rate difference between the two next-generation versions, but it wouldn't be the first time a multiplatform game was visually preferable on Sony's console.

This story has been updated with additional comments from Amaro and adjusted to reflect his intent.

that 'less than 5 hours' thing do not include the cinematic right? which is one reason why i like MGSIV so much. I hope they still deliver long high budget hollywood style cinematic in exchange of the short gameplay time.

Journey is no doubt a masterpiece, the pacing and gameplay are excellent. But I can't believe this guy at Konami is referring to Dear Esther as a masterpiece!

While I consider 'Dear Esther' unforgettable, it was just monotonous. I didn't have the patience for it and within minutes was looking for a way to quicken the walk speed by hundreds of units to make it more of a sprint. Sure, it's pretty and the narrative is a lot deeper than the average game, nonetheless, it is slow and boring and literally without any challenge. I wouldn't consider it a masterpiece at all. It's just extremely memorable for doing something so minimal and narrative driven that no other studio had attempted with the Source engine.

Evidently, this game has the same price for all versions in Japan. In Australia, the game is $89 which is the same price as GTAV. This MGS game is over-priced outside Japan.

The production on this one is superb and cost more, so a hefty price tag for the alleged "2-hour" game could've been justified.

You people realise that your retailers play a very big part in the cost factor right? As they too need to make a profit. I believe Ground Zeroes will hold it's own. A brand new engine, brand new mechanics, a brand new approach to a game, sandbox style gameplay, brand new CQC, day and night missions (ensuring different approaches). A decent arsenal at your disposal. The whole thing screams replay value!

Yet you see fit to say it is not worth the cost?

Because every battlefield game has totally been worth the $90 plus the added $100 from DLC or premium.

Because every CoD game has been worth the $90 with recycled maps and short as campaigns and added DLC

Because every game costing up to $90 has always been excellent.

Hell Bioshock Infinite was short as and was not worth the price tag it had (as amazing as it was) and that was priced at $90

Face it, hardly any games lately have been good and had replay value. Most are not worth the $90 price tag they have especially considering they sneak in expensive DLC.

At least with Kojima every game he has made has been outstanding.

At least he puts everything into what he does.

Hell, we get to play 2 hours worth of gameplay on a brand new engine that enables new gameplay and a brand new experience.

There are some people that pay $100 just to go to E3 and other events just so they can get their hands on some new games they can play for less than the same time.

I honestly believe in Kojima, every Metal gear game I have ever played has been amazing, and this will surpass them all in terms of gameplay until The Phantom Pain is release

I don't think I've seen other comments around this specific alternative, but what about renting the game? You can return it on the same day, and it costs, what, 4-5 bucks? Exactly what this demo should cost.

Let's rent it and that's it, nothing else to see until a truly complete game comes out.

if they sell this for 10 or 15 dollars then yeah 2 hours while short is not unreasonable, if they're trying to get 39.99 for 2 hours of gameplay then that's just silly. Makes no nevermind to me as I won't be getting it, I don't even plan to buy a nextgen console until Destiny anyway by then I could probably get this used for 15 bucks anyhow.

Why even release something so short though, just tack it on to the actual MGS5 game and call it a day.

Look. I love MGS. Love. I also don't have an issue with the length of GZ. But don't try and compare GZ to Dear Esther. Dear Esther is a mind blowing work of art.

I spent $2.49 on Dear Esther.

Don't think I'll be paying full retail for Ground Zeroes.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I paid $5 for Enslaved Premium Edition, which comes with the very good Pigsy's Perfect 10 DLC (a really well done sniper/stealth/platformer). The DLC by itself was worth the $5, let alone the excellent base game, which is a typical 10 or so hours for the main campaign.

While length does not always impact quality, personally it does impact enjoyment from a product. When I can pay $60 and get hundreds of hours of fun out of it, that is a better experience than a game I get 2 hours of fun out of. Not questioning MG quality but there are other quality games that give me more game time.

People of course are going to buy it anyway. I certainly will. I think the length of the game and it's worth are based on the quality of the game. MGS has always proved to be a worthwhile experience and Ground Zeroes does come across as something akin to the beginning of MGS 2. As long as the experience is good, then I will be happy to pay the price for it. Only thing I would like is the inevitable cliffhanger. I wish Phantom Pain would get a release date already.

I think 20 English pounds is more reasonable. Tho to be fair i bet this is way longer than 2 hours when played in an unrushed way and completing additional objectives. Predicting 14 hours on a hard setting and going for stealth.

I completely agree with this statement. Nowadays people too often mix quantity with quality. I would prefer a couple of hours of high quality content to billions of hours of same mediocre and repetitive gameplay.

Now, I'm not defending Ground Zeros, since it remains to be seen if it will deliver that kind of quality.

The full release of MGSV better not be overcharged and called a 'bundle' just cause they split the prologue from it and are launching it as a standalone game!

Quality isn't just about graphics. It is about game play, presentation, and difficulty. The length of a game is less important to me, but if I only enjoy something for a few hours and having paid $40 for the game I will come away feeling very cheated. What I do is compare it to other forms of enjoyment such as reading a book or watching a movie. If I paid $5 for the book that might take me 5-7 hours to read and $10 for the movie that took me 2 hours to watch - then paid $40 for a similar experience for a video game I will not be buying that video game at all. Granted the video game is more interactive, but it has to last more than a single afternoon because then it is way too expensive compared to those other forms of entertainment for me.

I've actually read Candide and other classics, thanks to school, so I understood what he meant by that (yay!). We all need to tend our gardens, but in SP games I like to either cheat my way to make a great garden or let other people do all the work and download their modded gardens :P.

As sad as it sounds if it was CDPR behind this game, they would double the length and sell it...for free.

The length isn't the biggest problem but its the PRICE!! Kojima basically labels this game as a prologue...in other words its just a demo for Phantom Pain...Bioshock's dlc had the same 2hr length but with a $10 price tag but people were STILL furious about it and here we have a $40 price-tag for this??

I'm not questioning about the quality of the game but think for yourself...is $40 REALLY worth the 2 hours length???? Sad thing is there are even demos that are longer...

Kojima should have given this game for free if he cared about the fans or at the very least have a $10 price-tag but a $40 for a 2 hour game is a nail in the coffin and goes to show how low the gaming industry has sunk..

I've heard it's 2 hours long. Does that include cutscenes? Typically MGS games are like 50% cutscenes....so is Ground Zero actually 1 hour?

<< LINK REMOVED >> besides, who's to say just like every other game in the series there isn't hours more cutscenes, I don't think anyone has actually asked Jordan if he just meant the playable sections? Either way, if they keep up the quality of what's come so far, I'll always be a fan.
