Mario, Zelda creator wants to make first-person shooter

Shigeru Miyamoto expresses interest in making FPS that allows players to fully explore 3D space, but says he doesn't have enough time to pursue it.

The man who created cultural phenomena like the Mario and Zelda franchises wants to make a first-person shooter. Speaking to Kotaku, Shigeru Miyamoto explained that while this genre is interesting to him, he is too busy with other projects to pursue it in earnest.

What kind of FPS might Miyamoto make?
What kind of FPS might Miyamoto make?

"I actually do kind of want to make a first-person shooter, but I don't have time," he said.

Miyamoto explained to Kotaku that if he were to build a first-person shooter, it might be different in structure than typical FPS games, and perhaps not particularly violent. He said he was specifically enthused with the idea of a game that allows players to look around and fully explore a 3D space.

"Rather than necessarily the question of 'What kind of weapon do I have?' in a first-person shooter or 'What kind of effect does that have on an enemy?' I think that the structure of a first-person shooter is something that's very interesting," he said through a translator. "Having that 3D space that in theory you are in and being able to look around and explore that--particularly being able to do that in conjunction with another person--is very interesting."

Miyamoto has dabbled in the first-person shooter space before. He served as a producer on Retro Studios' 2002 GameCube title Metroid Prime, though he was not involved in the day-to-day creation of that game.

I'm sure that if Nintendo made a FPS, it would be a very very unique and different approach to the genre. Not even close to a Call of Duty or Battlefield experience. Take Metroid for example. It' focuses on exploration and environment, not about M-rated, high action gun play.

I'm ready to bet my left eye that the avarage age of Mario fans is higher then the avarage age of Call of Duty fans. Mario is for everybody, Call of duty is for angry teenagers.

Sad that it seems 95% read the title and skipped the article to type comments about how Miyamoto is ''folding in'' and making Call of Duty. Equally sad that the (shooting) genre has driven them to do that.

actually i think what he said is quiet interesting . i've always dreamed of an fps game were you really felt you were there and could interact with anything in the environment in a realistic way to solve puzzles and progress and be able to fully explore your surroundings.some games like amnesia and half life have sort of tried it but i think it has always been a bit limited and not totally realistic and immersive.

@Apastron There's nothing wrong with FPS', just with military FPS'. Essentially there's nothing wrong with first person cameras, just the shooting part.

Stand back world, when he has an idea and it materializes into a game it usually sells at a minimum 10 million copies. Not to mention his game ideas are all generally materialize into very fun games. Also, when he says he wants to make a game, Nintendo usually goes out of its way to facilitate his desires because without them, they would be long since dead. Don't believe me, take all the Mario games out of the equation for the last few Nintendo systems and you have a system or two that don't sell very well.

@staranise Yes , I'm glad the ''mature'' audience will completely ignore a Nintendo ''kiddie'' shooter , I wouldn't want to have to deal with all of their ''mature'' racial slurs and ''I banged yo mama!'' cracks over multiplayer ,guess I'm not mature enough to handle that.

@staranise And if they do who gives a crap. They're usually pretty good and what they do. And as an adult people can make their own decisions. No one really cares if it's a "kids game" except teenagers still trying to prove they're not little kids. But adults already know that they can play whatever they want... even if it's a kids game.

But it's also clear you didn't read the story... because they specifically talked about how they wanted to make an FPS but how it might not necessarily be violent.

But the idea that an FPS is not "for kids," is just stupid. Most FPS are totally aimed at teenagers where as most adults are just simply not turned on by violence in the manner which people think as it is. No one plays Modern Warfare or Halo because it's violent. That would just be stupid. Again, that's the teenager trying to prove he's somehow "grown up," and the adult being insecure about being an adult. People play the FPS games for the same reason people play Mario in the end: Because it's entertaining and fun. They wouldn't do it otherwise. And most adults just don't care if it's "kiddie." Like I said, an adult doesn't care because... they're a freakin' adult! Why SHOULD they care?

FPS games are just cash-in nowadays, if its unique like Metroid Prime then I'll buy it but if it's anything like Call of Duty or Battlefield then no I just ignore it.

I'm sorry Mr. Miyamoto but Metroid Prime was a gem of its time and one of the best of all time! If you follow the current FPS formula the market is just "copying and pasting" with little arrangements here and there, shame on you...

@franzito To be honest, I don't recall Miyamoto ever copying and pasting anything, whatever he does, it's usually one on it's own, like pikmin for example, hard to find a similar game like that

@---Cipher--- The FPS is nothing more than just the current trend in gaming. I don't particularly play FPS too much, but I don't quite think they're everywhere the way people think they are. They're just the most heavily marketed and often best-selling games of the day. But there are usually a lot more NON-FPS games released in a year than not. The FPS ones are just the ones that get marketed and sold, but that doesn't mean that the other games aren't out there, it just means that we as gamers are barely paying attention to more out there. Instead of complaining about FPS and how they need to go away, we as consumers have to start voting with our wallets. If you want to transcend and go beyond the FPS then gamers need to start buying something other than the FPS.

Let's take Skyrim... that game sold a TON of copies. It was one of the biggest selling games of the past year. It spawned memes, angry girlfriends, neglected family members and an expansive world. A Western RPG through and through. Other games that came out and did rather well in 2011 include Uncharted 3, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D, Gears of War III, Assassin's Creed Revelations, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, FIFA Soccer 12 (in every country but the US, anyway), Batman Arkham City, LittleBigPlanet 2, Saint's Row: The Third, Star Wars the Old Republic, Mortal Kombat, Skylanders, Infamous 2, Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Just Dance 3, L.A. Noire, Forza 4, Gran Turismo 5...

All those games came out in 2011. And while, undoubtedly the bestselling game was Modern Warfare 3... ALL of the games listed above were HUGE commercial successes in 2011 and they WEREN'T First Person Shooters. Again, they didn't sell as well as Call of Duty, but in the end that's not really important. What's important is that there IS something else out there. And, again, the number of games released every year always seems to outnumber the amount of FPS games released.

And that's not even including games that continued to sell well after their initial release. Uncharted 2, Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Brothers Wii, Mario Kart DS, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Just Dance 2, Michael Jackson The Experience, New Super Mario Brothers, Fable III, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Pokemon Black and White... these were games released BEFORE 2011 (New Super Mario Bros was released in 2006, for instance and still has legs) and they still sold really well.

Basically all I'm saying is that the FPS itself doesn't necessarily dominate quite the way that Call of Duty in and of itself dominates. Yeah, Halo gets up there too, but aside from that... well, most other FPS I don't hear about quite as much. Killzone 3, for instance didn't do as well as most of the games I listed above. And people forget that New Super Mario Brothers Wii, throughout it's lifetime... outsold Call of Duty (though some of that has to do with it being packaged with the Wii).

All I'm saying is that I don't think the FPS needs to go away. I'm not saying the genre isn't huge... I'm simply saying that there really ARE other games out there. Call of Duty itself just dominates the market right now. But gamers seem to be finding other games to play just the same. And, like I said, way more games that AREN'T First Person Shooters get released each year. The difference is that the FPS is the one they're really trying to SELL that because there is always that hope that a game can reach Call of Duty numbers, but they don't. In fact a lot of them won't even sell a quarter of what Call of Duty sells. Because the sales of Call of Duty are just THAT big sometimes.

This guy is a creative genius hell as a designer my self i would be a fool to alienate a single genre of games. MYamoto would see an FPS as an opertunity to try some new things that he hasnt tried in a product before. and he pretty much was the reason MP1 was a FP game. origonalyl it was going to be thrid person.

i think that you should step up to third person sandbox world style adventuring..i dont think we could get used to the idea of turning nintendo from a sidescrolling adventuring perspective to a first person shooter..that just feels wrong plus there's a possibility of having stress from competing with CoD competitors..they play rough..they could easily AK47 mario to third-world

FPS That's Not Necessarily Violent = Portal, doesn't it?

That being said, having never really been able to get into the FPS Genre, but thoroughly enjoying Portal & Portal 2, if Miyamoto were to decide to take the time to create a game in the FPS-style minus the "blow all life to bits" motif, like he's expressed in this article, I'd be highly interested.
